Idrissa Gueye signs new Everton contract
Idrissa Gueye has signed a new one-year contract to remain at Everton. Gueye, 35, played a key role as Everton escaped the relegation zone and secured a 13th-placed Premier League finish under David Moyes in the 2024-25 season. The Athletic reported earlier this month that Gueye and defender Michael Keane were close to signing extended terms. The midfielder re-joined Everton from Paris Saint-Germain in September 2022 after initially departing Goodison Park in 2019 for the French club, where he won two Ligue 1 titles, five domestic cups and made 111 appearances. Idrissa Gana Gueye has signed a new one-year contract until the end of June 2026 with an option for a further year. ✍️ — Everton (@Everton) July 7, 2025 Gueye's Everton contract expired at the start of July, after the club exercised a one-year option to extend his terms last year. The Senegal international appeared in all but one of Everton's 38 Premier League matches last season, starting 35, typically operating at the base of Everton's midfield and breaking up play. Speaking in April, Moyes said that Gueye 'has done fantastically and he's surprised me a lot'. 'He's not a spring chicken and we're mindful of that,' Moyes added. 'There's a certain group of players here who he's very helpful to and they see him as a top player and a gentleman as well. They rely on him a lot, but for me, he's done so well.' Gueye, who will enter his seventh year with Everton across two spells, has played 211 times for the club. He is the latest player to sign a new contract at Goodison Park, with Jarrad Branthwaite signing a five-year deal, while Keane and captain Seamus Coleman signed a further year upon the expiry of their terms. Alongside his two Ligue 1 titles with PSG, Gueye also won the French title with Lille in 2011, claiming the Coupe de France in the same year. The midfielder represented Senegal 113 times, and helped his nation to lift the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which took place in January and February 2022. Analysis by Everton correspondent Patrick Boyland Of all those set to become free agents this summer, Gueye was the most important for Everton to retain. The Senegalese's longevity continues to surprise everyone at the club, including his manager Moyes, who described him as 'no spring chicken' last season. Even at 35, he is still a vital component, the engine of the team and by far the most reliable at putting out fires. Advertisement Gueye made 37 Premier League appearances last time out, but there is an increasing sense he will need to be carefully managed. That is why Everton pushed hard in talks this summer for an initial one year extension, with the option of a further 12 months. The club will hope to reduce their reliance on him over the season to come. In that sense, they would be wise to start succession planning as soon as possible so they don't suffer the same tremors that accompanied his 2019 move to Paris Saint-Germain next time around. Yet Gueye remains the club's most reliable central midfielder. Given the upheaval in the rest of the squad, losing him would have left them short both on numbers and quality in a key part of the pitch. Had he gone, something akin to a midfield rebuild would have been needed, a problem Everton knew they could do without. In this period of transition for Everton, Gueye's presence for a further 12 months at least should provide some comfort and reassurance. ()
