Eddie Murphy Says Pete Davidson Doesn't Need His Parenting Advice; Here's why
"You can't give people advice on how to raise a kid. It's all an individual thing," said Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy may be a comedy icon and a father of ten, but when it comes to dishing out parenting advice, he believes in keeping it to himself. While promoting his new action-comedy film The Pickup, Murphy shared a light-hearted moment about his co-star Pete Davidson, who recently became a father. After congratulating Davidson on the arrival of his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, Murphy revealed he didn't offer any parenting tips. Talking to USA Today, he said, 'You can't give people advice on how to raise a kid. It's all an individual thing, nature has wired you to do that." For Murphy, being a good parent is not something that can be learned from a book or someone else; it comes from within. 'I feel like you have to put more effort into actually being a bad parent, because being a good parent comes naturally," he added. Beyond their professional endeavour, both actors share a personal connection as well. They lost their fathers at a very young age. Murphy was just 8 when his father was killed, whereas Davidson lost his dad during the 9/11 attacks. On this, Murphy said, 'I told Pete he's going to be great. When you lose your dad really young, you go overboard yourself because you want them to have things you never had." The Plot Of The Pickup Now, Murphy and Davidson have come together for The Pickup. In the action-comedy, Murphy plays an armoured truck driver, forced to be with Davidson's cheerful rookie after the duo gets caught in a hijack plot, making them rely on each other to survive. The film also stars Keke Palmer and Eva Longoria in supporting roles. Pleased to be paired with Davidson for the film, Murphy joked, 'Pete is 6-foot-3 and white, and I'm 5-foot-10 and Black. He's in his 30s, I'm in my 60s… there's comedy in that." It is not just the laughs, there is deep respect and admiration for each other between the two. He added, 'We both started as stand-up comics really young, both were, and yeah, both lost our dads. We have a lot in common." What's Next For Murphy While talks are already on for a Pickup sequel, a possible remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with him and Davidson is also expected to be underway. The 1988 Frank Oz comedy classic Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine. First Published: August 07, 2025, 16:05 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Prime Video viewers divided over 'chaotic' Eddie Murphy action comedy
Prime Video viewers divided over 'chaotic' Eddie Murphy action comedy Some fans already think it's worth watching for the cast alone Prime Video viewers are divided over a new 'chaotic' action comedy starring Eddie Murphy. It has also been hailed as the 'perfect heist comedy', ideal for a light-hearted watch this coming weekend. The Pickup, released on the streaming platform today (August 6), has also received criticism in its early reactions. According to the synopsis of this action comedy, the film tracks the adventures of two mismatched armoured truck drivers, Russell and Travis. Their routine cash pickup takes an unexpected twist when they are ambushed by ruthless criminals led by a cunning mastermind, Zoe. The gang's plans extend far beyond merely seizing the truck's cash and cargo. Amidst the ensuing chaos, the unlikely pair must navigate perilous danger, conflicting personalities, and a progressively worsening day. Eddie Murphy's new movie is dividing viewers (Image: Amazon) The cast boasts comedians and former Saturday Night Live stars Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson as Russell and Travis. They share the screen with Keke Palmer, who plays Zoe, while Eva Longoria also features alongside former Hellboy Jack Kesy, reports the Mirror. Comic Andrew Dice Clay, ex-NFL star Marshawn Lynch, and WWE superstar Roman Reigns make cameo appearances. The Pickup was penned and directed by Tim Story, known for his work on the early Fantastic Four films for Fox and the Kevin Hart-led Ride Along movies. Initial reviews have started surfacing online following the film's debut, and they present a rather divided picture. Whilst some viewers who have already seen the picture reckon it's perfect for casual entertainment, others express disappointment given the quality of performers involved. One individual, posting their views online, declared: "The comedy is chaotic. The action is solid. The reason behind the heist? Deeply personal and honestly justified. Zoe's backstory brings the kind of emotional depth that gives this movie legs beyond the laughs." They went on: "This isn't a slick Ocean's Eleven clone; it's messier, funnier, and anchored by a cast that makes it feel fresh. The Pickup delivers exactly what it promises: a good time, a little drama, and Keke Palmer being that girl from start to finish." One reviewer commented: "With the hilarious trio of Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, and Keke Palmer, The Pickup is an absolute gem and the perfect heist comedy to stream." Another remarked: "The Pickup is a typical heist film, but thanks to its electric cast and very well written action scenes, it is a hilarious joyride." Nevertheless, others remained unconvinced, with one writing: "It's a fusion of car chase actioner and casino heist caper that aspires toward a wisecracking, Guy Ritchie-esque fusion of gunplay and laughs, but largely forgets its comedy mission along the way, while cribbing all of its action from superior entries." Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson in The Pickup (Image: Amazon) Another viewer expressed their disappointment, stating: "I had high hopes that The Pickup would be a fun action-comedy, but it is just another mediocre project full of wasted potential." Article continues below Only time will reveal how The Pickup will be remembered by fans, as the initial release of the trailer sparked considerable excitement. Many viewers suggested it harked back to the comedies of the late 1990s and early 2000s, while others were eager to see the on-screen chemistry between Murphy and Davidson. One particularly enthusiastic fan exclaimed: "This movie is a dream come true. All casting for this film is awesome!" The Pickup is streaming on Prime Video.

Murphy, Davidson deliver laughs together
Actor-comedians Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson team up for The Pickup, a heist film that sees them sparring as a pair of incompatible armoured truck drivers, reports Reuters. Starring opposite Murphy, 64, was "a bucket list thing" for Davidson, 31, who had admired Murphy's work since he was seven. Unlike their characters, the two had much in common. "Pete comes from SNL. He's a standup comic. We're both from the East Coast," said Murphy. "I love to get into a scene with somebody else that's funny, improvise with them and start playing, I love it." On a routine round of cash pickups, Murphy's Russell and Davidson's Travis get targeted by criminals. Things get personal when Travis discovers that the thieves are led by his one-night-stand from the night before, played by Keke Palmer, and the life of Russell's hot-headed wife, played by Eva Longoria, comes under threat. The duo must pull together to save the day. The script, by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, served as their blueprint and director Tim Story encouraged them to go off it, the two said. "We would do one as written and then Tim and everyone was like, 'Just go nuts' and we would end up just trying to one-up each other, we were just trying to make each other laugh," said Davidson. "They were improvising constantly and it was really sweet to see. It's so cool because you see two different generations," added Palmer. The generational differences also seeped into the scenes, with the fighting taking its toll on Russell's body. "Usually in these types of movies or my early movies like the 'Beverly Hills Cop' and 48 Hrs., I was the young maverick and now I'm the older guy," said Murphy. The Pickup starts streaming on Prime Video on August 6. As per Variety, Murphy's next big screen project is reprising his role as Donkey in Shrek 5. He's also signed on for a Donkey spin-off, which he'll start filming in September, according to Screenrant.
