Treat-seeker loved by all

PHOTO: ELLA JENKINS Whether you are out for a coffee, visiting the dog daycare or getting a tattoo, chances are you have bumped into Poncho on his quest to find treats in Alexandra. Poncho, a seven-year-old Australian Shepherd and Border Collie mix can often been seen walking around Alexandra looking for treats or out with his owners Alyssa Serignese and Antony Le Prevost, owners of Alexandra Tattoo Co. Ms Serignese adopted Poncho when he was six months old, and the couple bought him with them when they moved from Colorado to Central Otago in 2021. For three years Poncho has been the emotional support dog for those getting piercings or tattoos and some people visit the shop just to pat him. "People will poke their head in and just be like, 'hey, I'm not interested in the tattoo, I just wanted to say hello to the dog'," Mr Le Provost said. Ms Serignese believed that Poncho was better known and more liked than her and Mr Le Provost. "A lot of people will say more people know Poncho than they know us, I would say." Mr Le Provost said Poncho would wait for a chance to escape to the nearby Pet Pit Stop at least once a day, often returning with a treat. To repay the petshop, the couple would put a $5 note and some treats for the shopkeepers for Poncho to take over when he visits. Pet Pit Stop manager Jo Shakespeare said Poncho would come to grab a frisbee with treats in it and return to the tattoo shop. When the frisbee was empty he would come back with lollies for the shopkeepers and occasionally $5 to pay for treats. As well as hunting for treats Poncho was known to find scraps of food that might have been dropped. "He's my vacuum cleaner. If there's any treats dropped, he'll find them." He would even dive under shelves and invade the office to find treats, she said. Another place Poncho frequented was Cafe Rossi popping in at least twice a week manager Krystal Scott said. For the dog-friendly cafe, Poncho is a frequent four-legged visitor, with his picture on a wall with all the other dogs that visit the cafe. Poncho came over for pats, and then returned to the tattoo shop, she said. "We need to get him some treats, but we just give him pats and that, we love all our dogs here." Ms Scott believes Poncho is probably the most famous dog in Alexandra. "Oh, he's just gorgeous," she said.

There is nothing like going for an early morning stroll or a nice light jog with one of your best friends. We humans enjoy these kinds of activities together all the time. And apparently, some animals like to do the same. As this news report shows, Poncho the donkey and Seabiscuit the miniature pony, also enjoying taking an early morning stroll together. And we must say, they are easily the cutest pair of jogging buddies that we have ever seen! As you can see from this video, Poncho and Seabiscuit are completely relaxed, just taking their time as they trot along down the street in the wee hours of the morning before the sun has risen. This adorable duo was spotted by a police officer who was doing their late-night/early-morning patrol and decided to follow them when they saw them trotting down the street. Wanting to make sure that Poncho and Seabiscuit made it back home safely, this officer decided to follow them at a safe distance to make sure that they were able to find their way back home okay. At one point, towards the end of the video, both Poncho and Seabiscuit actually turned around to face the police car. They seemed somewhat inquisitive, possibly wondering why they were being maybe they realized that they needed to get back home and were heading in the wrong direction? Either way, watching them turn around and staring into the headlights and seeing how gently the police cruiser came to a stop while the officer waited for them to choose which direction they would go in next made for an incredibly cute moment! According to this news report, this adorable donkey and his miniature pony best friend did make it back home as safe as can be, with their police escort lighting the way for them with their patrol car headlights. If you thought that Poncho and Seabiscuit really seemed like they were on the same wavelength in this video, like a couple of genuine besties, you would not be wrong. As it turns out, donkeys and horses can make great companions. However, like with any other relationship, it has to flourish on its own terms. Not every donkey and horse will necessarily get along. It's important to consider each creature's unique personality and be very careful and gradual while introducing them to each other to make sure that they can get along. Welsh Mountain Zoo welcomes seven adorable babies!
A total of seven babies have been born in recent weeks at the Colwyn Bay attraction, including three Humboldt penguin chicks, two white-tailed sea eagles, one pine marten and one red squirrel. Humboldt penguin chick (Image: Welsh Mountain Zoo) The adorable penguin chicks are from two nests, with Poncho and Frankie having two chicks, and Pudding and Yoshi also having one chick. The two white-tailed sea eagle chicks also hatched in April, to proud parents Hallie and Albi - marking a first for the zoo and helping to boost their numbers in human care. Hannah Slaney, Head of Animals at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, said: 'It really has been a joyous time here in recent weeks as we welcomed all of our new babies. It's wonderful to see each of them developing and growing just as they should, gaining strength and confidence each day. Baby pine martens are called kits (Image: Welsh Mountain Zoo) 'Breeding programmes, all of which these species are a part of, are fundamentally why the zoo exists. Conservation, and ensuring the continued preservation of threatened or at-risk species, sits at the core of Welsh Mountain Zoo's values, and to see so many successful births really is heart-warming for us all.' All penguin chicks are developing as keepers would hope and expect. The zoo enjoys a long and rich history in breeding Humboldt penguins which spans over three decades.

Poncho back with Cowgirls
McNeese slugger Corine Poncho is back after sitting out the 2024 season to concentrate on her studies. (Rodrick Anderson / American Press Archives) McNeese head softball coach James Landreneau hit a home run on the recruiting circuit Tuesday, and he never had to leave campus. According to sources, Corine Poncho, the power-hitting first baseman who sat out last season, has rejoined the Cowgirl softball team. An official announcement is expected later Tuesday afternoon. During the season, Landreneau stated that Poncho was always considered in good standing with the program despite her surprising decision to miss the year and focus on her studies. Landreneau saw his young team become a surprise four-time Southland Conference regular-season champs. The Cowgirls are the first SLC team ever to win four straight titles. McNeese finished the year 41-20 and advanced to the title game of the SLC championship series, where the Cowgirls lost heartbreakingly to Southeastern at home. Poncho was often seen attending many of the home games. In 2024, Poncho led the Southland Conference with 15 home runs as a sophomore, finishing with a .313 batting average and 36 runs batted in. She also walked a league-best 34 times while scoring 48 runs. Poncho earned first-team all-SLC honors for her efforts, as she also stole 16 bases. She will have two years of eligibility remaining. As a freshman, Poncho hit .341 over 41 games with three homers, 15 RBIs, and nine walks. During her senior season at Notre Dame High School in Crowley, she set the national record for home runs in a season with 32, driving in 71 runs, and was named Miss Softball in Louisiana. Her return to the roster will bolster a lineup that includes Jada Munoz, who had a breakout season last year with 15 home runs in her first season as a full-time starter at third base. Also expected back is Alexis Dibbley, who missed the second half of last season with an injury. As a rookie in 2024, Dibbley hit .351 with six home runs and 13 doubles in 57 games. She was named the SLC and Louisiana Freshman of the Year. The trio should give McNeese a powerful middle of the order next season. Landreneau confirmed Tuesday the signing of transfer infielder Maddie Weeks from Southern Mississippi. Weeks hit .299 last year while starting 51 games for the Golden Eagles. 'Maddie is a nice addition for us,' said Landreneau. 'She is a high-energy kid who can play all over the field and brings a lot of experience with her.' The Cowgirls will bring back a strong core for next year, as they will likely be the favorites to repeat as SLC champions for the fifth time.
