Rain alert persists for a few Western Ghats districts this week
Strong wind convergence will influence heavy rainfall in a few Western Ghats districts this week. Chennai may have another day of respite from warm weather as evening showers may continue on Friday. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow weather alert for the Ghat areas of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris districts till Saturday as there is a possibility of rainfall up to 12 cm. Strong surface winds with speed reaching 40-50 km per hour may prevail at isolated places of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Saturday. Chennai, which was experiencing warm and humid days, may have relief from the sultry weather on Friday. Evening thunderstorms with light or moderate rainfall may lash some parts of the city and keep the temperature around 36 degree Celsius - 37 degree Celsius. B. Geetha, Scientist 'D', RMC, said an increase in the westerly wind speed would lead to wind convergence, triggering rainfall over the Ghat areas. In coastal places like Chennai, the presence of atmospheric moisture, combined with hot westerlies, would bring thunderstorms in the evening or night hours. Sometimes, wind advection from other places like Rayalaseema might also influence thunderstorms in coastal regions, including Chennai. It was typical for the westerlies to strengthen in south T.N. districts like Thoothukudi, Theni and Dindigul around this time of the year, she said. Isolated rainfall might prevail over the State till July 9. On Thursday, places like Valparai, Udhagamandalam, Perambalur and Nagercoil recorded mild showers between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. The day turned noticeably cooler in Chennai, with temperature dropping by nearly three degree Celsius after the previous day's rainfall. Weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 degree Celsius and 34.6 degree Celsius, respectively. Areas like Kasimedu (7 cm) and Perambur (6 cm) received heavy rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. The State had so far received 12% surplus rainfall during this Southwest monsoon beginning June 1. Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Tiruvarur, Tirunelveli and Theni were among the districts that received excess rainfall this season, she said. In its outlook for July, the department has forecast a possibility of above normal temperature in most of the coastal places.

Building collapse sparks evacuation drive
Following the collapse of a dilapidated and vacant building in Bohar Bazaar owing to heavy rainfall, the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) have launched a city-wide emergency operation, declaring over 200 multi-storey buildings, aged between 100 to 150 years and in a state of disrepair, dangerous and ordering to be vacated immediately. Warning notices have been issued to residents living in and around these fragile structures, as well as to those residing along the 22-kilometer-long Nullah Leh and 15 seasonal stormwater drains. These areas are prone to flooding, and the pre-monsoon rains have already submerged up to 70% of the city under three feet of water. Authorities have announced that if any building collapses, FIRs (First Information Reports) will be filed against its occupants. Legal action will also be taken against owners, tenants, and residents who fail to comply with the evacuation notices. Despite spending Rs80 million on cleaning Nullah Leh and Rs60m on clearing storm drains, floodwaters have still entered homes and shops in low-lying areas, causing losses worth millions of rupees. In response, the Chief Officer of the RMC has launched a public awareness campaign, warning of severe legal consequences for families refusing to vacate dangerous buildings. Technical assistance is being offered to residents for building repairs. Furthermore, notices have been issued to evacuate all settlements located along Nullah Leh and storm drains. Encroachments, including animal shelters, must be removed immediately. The ETPB has also issued final notices to tenants occupying around 250 properties — buildings, plazas, and shops — asking them to vacate leaking and structurally unsound premises. These century-old and older buildings are primarily located in Rawalpindi's old city areas, including Mohalla Shah Chan Chiragh, Pul Shah Nazar Dewan, Mohalla Niyarian, Bohar Bazaar, Bhabi Bhara Bazaar Raja Bazaar, Trunk Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, areas around Lal Haveli, Purana Qila, Ghazni Road, Bagh Sardaran, Kartarpura, Angatpura, Sarafa Bazaar Landa Bazaar, Narankari Bazaar, Kalan Bazaar, Mochi Bazaar, Sarai Mughal, both sides of Jamia Masjid Road, Tyre Bazaar, Chitian Hattian, Teli Mohalla, Ganjmandi, and Gawalmandi.

Gurgaon's illegal concrete plants to face sealing, power shutdown: Minister Rao Narbir Singh
Gurgaon: Illegal ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants in the city will face action from the discom and the pollution board, said industry and commerce minister Rao Narbir Singh on Tuesday, asking the pollution control board to seal illegal RMC plants, and the electricity department to immediately cut off their power supplies. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This came after it was found that the RMC plants were operating even after being sealed. While speaking at a review meeting held with officials of the DHBVN and pollution control board on Tuesday regarding departmental works in the district, action on illegal activities, and strengthening of infrastructure, Singh said, "Whenever the pollution control board seals any illegal RMC plant, the electricity department should cut its power connection with immediate effect so that a strong message is sent to those who violate the rules." Singh directed the pollution board and DHBVN officials to jointly take action against such illegal RMCs. Besides, the discom was directed to fix hanging wires on all major roads in the city to maintain smooth traffic flow. "These wires pose an increased risk of accidents during the rainy season, and thus, such areas should be identified and addressed on a priority basis," said Singh. Additionally, he instructed the officials that electric poles located in the middle of roads or within residential areas in rural regions be relocated according to regulations. Singh also acknowledged the issues faced by farmers and workers in rural fields and instructed that old and dilapidated wires should be replaced systematically. He stated that after the harvest, immediate repairs should be conducted in areas where wires are hanging low to prevent accidents. Rao stressed the importance of regular monitoring of departmental work to ensure all tasks are completed according to set standards and timelines. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He warned departmental officials that any negligence or laxity at any level would result in accountability and strict action. GMDA issued notices to four ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants in the city in March for causing dust pollution.
