A 1980 Renault R5 Turbo 1 in Photos

More from Robb Report The Renault R5 Turbo May Be the Hottest 'Hot Hatch' Ever Made This Is the Only Ferrari 250 GTO Painted White at the Factory. It's Now Heading to Auction. This Ultra-Rare 1966 Lamborghini 400 GT 'Interim' Is Now up for Grabs Best of Robb Report The 2024 Chevy C8 Corvette: Everything We Know About the Powerful Mid-Engine Beast The World's Best Superyacht Shipyards The ABCs of Chartering a Yacht Click here to read the full article. This 1980 Renault R5 Turbo 1 sold for €86,250 (approximately $100,650) through RM Sotheby's in 2019. Renault's R5 Turbo 1 features a zero-to-62 mph time of about 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph. The longitudinally mounted 1.4-liter inline-four engine makes about 158 hp. The interior of the Renault R5 Turbo 1 features a cubistic red-and-blue design. The Turbo 1 commands a higher price than the more common Turbo 2, and the original generation's dramatic interior and purpose-built bits make it the ultimate R5. The R5 Turbo was never inexpensive, and justifiably so for what was essentially a handmade homologation special. Prices for an example in good condition hover at, or under, $100,000, while $160,000 or more is not unreasonable for one in concours-quality condition. While enthusiasts used to have to do backflips to get a new R5 Turbo in the U.S. during its heyday, an example can be easily imported now, given that the model is more than 25 years old.

Billionaire Larry Ellison's McLaren F1 Is Up For Sale

A McLaren F1 first bought by Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison in 1997 is being sold to its fourth owner and, if it fetches a price near its assessed value, will become the most expensive McLaren ever sold. A 1997 McLaren F1 valued at $23 million. Zach Brehl ©2025 Courtesy of RM Sotheby's The car, which has been driven only 6,500 miles in the almost 30 years since it was first purchased, is listed for sale through Sotheby's with an assessed value of more than $23 million. Called chassis no. 062, the car has been owned by just three people and was one of only seven McLaren F1s exported new to the United States through a company called Ameritec in the 1990s. The F1s that came into the country required modifications to pass American federal safety and emissions standards, but it's believed the changes were made only to the first car imported to and not the other six vehicles in the lot, meaning the car for sale wasn't modified for federalization after being built by McLaren. It remains legal to drive despite the oversight, and the original seven are still the only F1s considered road legal in California, according to Sotheby's. The vehicle has had some post-production upgrades, like upgraded air conditioning, radiators and sports exhaust, but still has its original magnesium wheels, owner's manuals, luggage set, car cover, F1-branded Auto Glym detailing kit, service modem and other parts. The car's current owner isn't listed, but Sotheby's says it has 'been carefully looked after by its three private owners, all prominent figures in their respective industries, with no expenses spared regarding maintenance and upgrades.' That's how much the most expensive McLaren ever sold fetched in Pebble Beach in 2021. Also an F1, the car had only been driven 242 miles. Key Background The McLaren F1, produced from 1992 to 1998, is still the fastest naturally-aspirated production automobile ever built. Only 106 of the cars were ever made, and they were widely recognized as the world's fastest "production car" when they were first released. The F1 laid the groundwork for virtually every supercar that has been built since and versions of the vehicle modified for racing have won several events, including the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. There are about 40 F1s in the United Kingdom and 30 in the United States, with the others spread out across the world. Other notable owners of McLaren F1s have included fashion designer Ralph Lauren, comedian Jay Leno, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, Beatles guitarist George Harrison, musician Eric Clapton and actor Rowan Atkinson. Elon Musk, the richest person in the world, famously bought a McLaren F1 for $1 million after selling his first company, Zip2, but later crashed it while reportedly showing it off to PayPal cofounder and billionaire Peter Thiel. He sold the car in 2007. Crucial Quote "The McLaren F1 is the finest driving machine yet built for the public road," Autocar magazine wrote in 1994. "The F1 will be remembered as one of the great events in the history of the car." What To Watch For What chassis no. 062 sells for. Bidding on the car will close Saturday, Aug. 16. Ellison, chief technology officer and cofounder of software giant Oracle, was the second richest person in the world as of Tuesday with an estimated net worth of $298.3 billion. This Ruf Yellowbird Is Extra Special, and Not Just Because It's the Wrong Color

The latest car news, reviews, and features. The Ruf CTR, often known by its nickname 'Yellowbird,' was a Porsche 911 Carrera so heavily customized that it essentially became a new car. A few were made to the same spec, but only one was painted Bordeaux Red and personally driven by Alois Ruf Jr. That's the car we're looking at here, and it's for sale. This 1989 Ruf CTR1 Lightweight, unofficially dubbed 'Redbird,' is one of six extra-lean CTRs ever made. To earn the Lightweight designation, some steel body panels were swapped for aluminum; there's no center console, no roll cage, no power brakes, no sunroof, no radio, some chassis sound-deadening foam is gone, and the seats are extra-light ones. RM Sotheby's The twin-turbo flat-six bored to 3.4-liters, Ruf five-speed transmission, and chassis reinforcements are still present, though. These cars claimed 211 mph in 1987—a ridiculous speed for a vehicle this delicate in any era—letting it win Road & Track's 'World's Fastest Car' shootout that year. But '89 was when the 'Faszination on the Nürburgring' video was released, cementing Ruf's awesomeness in the minds of anybody who had the chance to see it. This particular car, the ninth CTR built (of 29 total, six of which were Lightweight models), was reportedly stored at Alois Ruf Jr.'s house and used as his personal car to some extent before being delivered to its first real owner. Mr. Ruf himself was, of course, the tuner whose obsession with tinkering on 911s got one of the most elite Porsche customization houses into the annals of history after taking over Ruf from his father (also named Alois). But even without the fun backstory, the spec on this thing is just incredible. The red-over-dark-brown has a real richness to it. I feel like I can smell the interior through some of these photos. I mean, the whole car is just delightful to look at. Sadly, for most of us, looking is all we'll be doing with it—R.M. Sotheby's is auctioning it at Monterey this summer, but expects it to fetch between $4.5 and $5 million. RM Sotheby's Know about any other extra-special special Porsches? Drop me a line at

Skip 18 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. 1 / 18 Three-time Grammy Award winner Dua Lipa is currently in the midst of a monster year-long world tour to promote her third studio album Radical Optimism. And yet, the pop star somehow still found the time to spec a very special Porsche 911 GT3 RS. One of us! One of us! Yep, Lipa clearly also likes to procrastinate by spending inordinate amounts of time on supercar configurators. Two differences from our efforts though; it turns out she's actually quite good at speccing a sports car, and she also went and actually had the thing built. And yes, Rennstall translates to 'racing team', but this isn't Lipa announcing a Le Mans 24hrs entry for next year. That 1970s-esque turquoise, orange and red livery would look rather excellent at La Sarthe, though. In fact, this particular GT3 RS is now up for auction via RM Sotheby's, with all the proceeds from the sale set to be donated to Dua Lipa's own charity, the Sunny Hill Foundation, to support Kosovan communities while promoting the arts and culture. RM Sotheby's said the brilliantly retro livery is the 'perfect reflection of the vibrancy that typifies Dua Lipa's stage design and performances'. The car itself was unveiled back at the Monaco Grand Prix in May, but you may have spotted Lipa at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, as she jumped in the passenger seat alongside Iron Dames driver Karen Gaillard for a run up the famous hillclimb. Lipa – who has been a Porsche ambassador since 2023 – also ticked the boxes for the Weissach Pack, the lightweight magnesium wheels, carbon ceramic brakes and a Guards Red finish on the rev counter and stopwatch. Dua Lipa's Custom Porsche 911 GT3 RS Heads to Auction for Charity

Read the full story on Modern Car Collector A one-of-a-kind Porsche 911 GT3 RS designed by pop superstar Dua Lipa is heading to the auction block at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed, with all proceeds benefiting the Sunny Hill Foundation, her nonprofit supporting arts and culture in Kosovo. Unveiled earlier this spring during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, the custom Porsche—dubbed the 'Dua Lipa Rennstall GT3 RS'—features a vibrant livery that blends green, black, gold, and red swirls. The British-Albanian singer was directly involved in the creative process, giving Porsche's most track-oriented 911 a bold, personal touch. 10 Must-Have Tools and Gear for the Modern Car Collector (Amazon Edition) Built around the high-performance 992-generation 911 GT3 RS, the car boasts a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine capable of revving to 9,000 rpm. With 525 PS (518 horsepower) delivered to the rear wheels via a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, the Rennstall GT3 RS retains all the ferocity of its production sibling—paired with one-of-a-kind star power. Auction house RM Sotheby's is overseeing the sale, with the vehicle drawing attention from car collectors and pop culture enthusiasts alike. It marks one of the few instances where a celebrity-designed modern Porsche is offered for public sale with philanthropic intent. 'I wanted to create something that fuses the emotion of music, design, and driving,' Dua Lipa said in a recent statement. 'The Sunny Hill Foundation has always been close to my heart, and this project is a celebration of the culture and creativity it supports.' The auction will take place during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, one of the UK's premier automotive events. While no reserve has been publicly announced, industry experts predict the GT3 RS could fetch well over £500,000 due to its exclusivity and celebrity connection. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter
