Delhi Announces 'Freedom From Garbage' Campaign For Cleanest Constituency

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced cash rewards ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore for the cleanest RWA, ward, and assembly constituency, based on their performance in the 'Delhi Freedom from Garbage' cleanliness drive. During a preparatory meeting for the 'Delhi Freedom from Garbage' cleanliness drive aimed at transforming the capital into one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country, Ms Gupta said the best-performing Resident Welfare Association (RWA) will be awarded Rs 25 lakh, while the second and third positions will receive Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, respectively. The cleanest ward will get Rs 50 lakh, and the cleanest assembly constituency will receive Rs 1 crore in funding, she added. RWAs and organisations participating in the campaign are required to upload before-and-after photos on a dedicated portal, which will be used to evaluate performance and disburse the prize money, she added. Ms Gupta said Rs five crore has been allocated to the MCD for the campaign, assuring full government support to all those contributing to a cleaner Delhi. "We are writing a golden chapter in Delhi's history. For the first time, agencies like the MCD, Delhi government, PWD, Delhi Police, and others are working together in full coordination," Ms Gupta said, urging every citizen to take ownership under the campaign's motto "Meri Delhi, Meri Zimmedari" (My Delhi, My Responsibility). The drive will run from August 1 to 31, with the first two days focused on clearing backlogs in schools, hospitals, and offices. Every Saturday and Sunday, efforts will be concentrated on unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters. Special clean-up drives are also planned at Yamuna ghats on August 14, 21, and 28, while Ring Road will be cleaned on August 29 and 31. Meanwhile, taking a dig at the previous AAP government, CM Gupta said it had created a negative image of Delhi but under the leadership of the prime minister, a "positive and united front" is now working to address the city's long-standing issues starting with the problem of garbage.

Flaws in infra, sewage spills into parks & open plots, raises a stink in Gurgaon's Sector 9A

Gurgaon: Residents of Sector 9A have been facing persistent sewage overflows due to a malfunctioning main pumping station (MPS) in the area. They pointed out repeated failure of the pumping station to channel sewage to the treatment plant (STP), resulting in raw sewage continuing to stagnate near residential areas and creating an unbearable stench, further posing severe hygiene and environmental risks. Residents have written to GMDA CEO Shyamal Misra, seeking his intervention on the matter. The MPS was built to channel sewage across the railway line to a treatment plant at Dhanwapur. Residents say that raw sewage flows along the railway track and spills into nearby green belts, parks, and open plots. "This is not a one-off issue after rains; we have been living with this for years. Our parks have turned into dumping grounds for sewage. The trees we planted five to six years ago started dying, and the park is no longer safe for any kind of use," said Lalit Bhola, general secretary of the RWA. You Can Also Check: Gurgaon AQI | Weather in Gurgaon | Bank Holidays in Gurgaon | Public Holidays in Gurgaon According to residents, they have made repeated complaints to GMDA officials, but no lasting measures have been taken to resolve the issue. "Every time we raise the matter, we are told the motors are under capacity or the system is overloaded — but nothing is done to prevent the sewage from spilling out," Bhola added. In response, a GMDA official maintained that the system is working as intended. "The main pumping station is functioning at full capacity, and the discharge is occurring through freefall, ensuring smooth outflow. During the monsoon season, the MPS can pump up to 230 MLD against its 168 MLD usual capacity," the official said. Residents, however, questioned these claims. "If everything is running smoothly, then why is sewage still flowing through our sector?" asked RS Balwada, a resident. With the ongoing monsoon intensifying the overflow, residents say the situation is worsening, with no interim arrangements such as containment or redirection in place. "Besides creating unlivable conditions in our sector, it is causing environmental degradation. There should be some temporary arrangement as they cannot remain in denial while residents keep suffering ," Balwada added. In July last year, the govt had approved the augmentation of the existing main pumping station up to 665.5 MLD capacity. Subsequently, the GMDA started the tendering process in May this year, but extended the timeline for submitting the bid to August. Once construction begins, the project, estimated at Rs 97.6 crore, will take two years to complete.

Ahead of Independence Day, govt. launches month-long cleanliness drive

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said that to mark Independence Day, the government is launching a month-long cleanliness campaign starting from August 1. The campaign, called 'Delhi's Freedom from Garbage – Cleanliness Drive', plans to include all departments of the Delhi government, residents' welfare associations (RWAs), market associations, and school and college students. 'August is celebrated as the month of India's independence, and the government has resolved that this August, Delhi will achieve freedom from garbage,' Ms. Gupta said. She said the campaign will focus on schools, government offices and hospitals, and efforts will be made to clear accumulated waste. 'Attention will be given to slum areas, unauthorised colonies and informal settlements, ensuring that a significantly higher volume of waste is collected and disposed of compared to normal days. Cleanliness is not merely a government initiative but a civic duty,' the CM added. The Chief Minister's Office said a meeting with Ministers, MPs, councillors and RWA representatives will be held on July 29 to finalise the details of the execution of the campaign.

Fire breaks out in power meter, leaves 16 families without electricity for 10 hrs

Noida: A fire broke out in the meter panel of a residential tower at Shiv Shakti Apartments in Sector Mu-2 around 3 am on Friday, leaving over 16 families without electricity for more than 10 hours. The fire, which began at the meter of flat 945, quickly spread to other meters in the panel, damaging all 16 units under the tower. No injuries were reported, but several residents said they were briefly trapped and experienced suffocation due to smoke. As the power outage rendered stairways dark and inaccessible, residents struggled to exit the building. A quick response by an RWA member helped contain the flames before fire services arrived. RWA president Dharmendra Rathi said this was the third fire-related incident in the society in a month and blamed inadequate infrastructure. Residents expressed anger that Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) officials failed to reach the site until nearly 10 hours after the fire. NPCL later cited electrical overloading and substandard cabling as the root causes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo "The outgoing cabling laid by GNIDA cannot handle the power load, leading to frequent short circuits," said Shashank Andey of NPCL's metering division.
