However, some game iterations have allowed players to control Princess Zelda. It's important to note that Ainsworth's previous roles include Miles Wingrave in Netflix's "The Haunting of Bly Manor" and voicing Pinocchio in Disney's 2022 live-action film. According to a report by USA Today, both casting selections feature relatively lesser-known actors compared to some of the fan-favourite suggestions. Notably, "Euphoria" star Hunter Schafer was a widely popular choice among fans to portray Zelda, the report claims. Nintendo's 'The Legend of Zelda' live-action movie: What we know so far The Legend of Zelda movie is expected to be the next major Nintendo game adaptation following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned over $1.3 billion globally and became the second highest-grossing film of 2023, just behind Barbie. A sequel to Mario is also in the works and scheduled for release in 2026. Unlike the animated Mario film, Zelda will be a live-action adaptation. The movie is being directed by Wes Ball, known for the Maze Runner trilogy and 2024's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ball has long expressed his desire to direct a Zelda movie, even posting back in 2010 on the social media platform X (then Twitter). ' Since I could never even hope to have the chance to direct it .. . the next big (motion capture) 'Avatar'-like movie should be ... THE LEGEND OF ZELDA,' he wrote.

The Legend of Zelda film casts two young actors as co-leads Link and Princess Zelda

Don't miss out on the headlines from Upcoming Movies. Followed categories will be added to My News. Two young British actors have been cast as the leads for one of the most challenging film adaptations attempted in recent years. Buoyed by the reception of The Super Mario Bros Movie in 2023, and having witnessed the popularity of A Minecraft Movie earlier this year, Nintendo is now seeking similar success by turning its celebrated video game series The Legend of Zelda into a movie too. It's the first attempt to adapt Zelda since an ill-fated animated TV series back in 1989, which was not at all well received. All involved will be hoping for better results now. So, the lead actors. Twenty-one-year-old Bo Bragason, best known for her role in the Disney+ show Renegade Nell, has been cast as the titular Princess Zelda. Bragason also has credits to her name from TV series Three Girls and The Jetty, plus horror films Censor and The Radleys. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who was the voice of Pinocchio in Disney's 2022 live-action remake of the children's classic, will play the sword-wielding hero Link. His credits also include The Haunting of Bly Manor, All Fun and Games and Everything's Going to Be Great. Ainsworth is facing a rather unique challenge, and so are the writers who will come up with his lines. He's playing a character who, famously, never talks in the game series. At all. Link's only vocalisations are grunts, sighs and other non-verbal noises. It's about as unadaptable a character, for the big screen, as you could imagine. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen,' he said. 'The film is scheduled to be released in theatres on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience,' Miyamoto added. The film is still awaiting its villain. In most of the Zelda games, Link and Zelda go up against a power-hungry demon king called Ganon, or Ganondorf. The director attached to the project is Wes Ball, whom you'd know from The Maze Runner, which adapted the young adult novel of the same name, and The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the fourth film in that series. 'I've been thinking about it for a long freakin' time, how cool a Zelda movie would be,' Ball told Total Film last year. 'I want to fulfil people's greatest desires. I know it's important, this franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape. 'That's the thing I want to try to create. It's got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.' Originally published as The Legend of Zelda film casts two young actors as co-leads Link and Princess Zelda

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Live-Action Movie Casts Link and Zelda, Alas Hunter Schafer Not Involved

A live-action The Legend of Zelda movie has been a long time in the making. It has been a number one request from fans for years. We learned about the movie was actually happening all the way back in 2023. And, of course, the number one question that followed the announcement was, 'Who would play Link and Zelda in the live-action movie?' But we received no word about casting, leaving plenty of room for speculation… Until now. The live-action The Legend of Zelda movie has finally cast its Link and Zelda. Interestingly enough, despite many high-profile names being tossed around, the live-action Zelda movie has gone with two relatively unknown actors. Let's take a look at who has been cast. Who Will Play Link in the Live-Action Movie? Although his name isn't in the title, our hero Link is an important character. In the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, Link will be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth might be best known to Nerdist readers as the creepy kid from Mike Flanagan's Netflix show, The Haunting of Bly Manor. Now, he'll be much less eerie and much more epic as he takes on maybe the most iconic video game leading man ever, Link. We can see the vision in this The Legend of Zelda live-action movie casting choice. Who Will Play Princess Zelda in the Live-Action Movie? The Legend of Zelda fans REALLY hoped that Hunter Schafer would play Princess Zelda in the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. And we must admit, casting Hunter Schafer would have been a really perfect decision. Schafer is super talented, and we'd have loved to see a transgender person cast in such a high-profile role. But, alas, it was not to be. The Legend of Zelda has instead cast Bo Bragason as its live-action Princess Zelda. You might know Bragason from Disney+'s Renegade Nell, and we're excited to see what she can do. Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto Is Excited By the Link and Zelda Casting for Movie Nintendo Head Shigeru Miyamoto shared some words of praise for the this duo on social media. He noted, 'This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.' More About the Upcoming Movie So far, we know that The Legend of Zelda will release on May 7, 2027. It will be directed by Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' Wes Ball. We don't know much about the plot of The Legend of Zelda yet, but we assume it will follow the story of Link and Zelda as they battle evils across the kingdom. Solve the daily Crossword

‘Legend of Zelda' live-action movie finds its Zelda and Link

The live-action 'Legend of Zelda' movie has found its stars. Legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who's an executive producer on the film, announced Wednesday on X that Bo Bragason will portray Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will portray Link in Nintendo and Sony's film. Miyamoto created the hit video game series with Takashi Tezuka. British actor Bo Bragason is known for her roles in BBC One's 'Three Girls' and 'The Jetty,' as well as Disney+'s 'Renegade Nell' and the 2024 vampire comedy 'The Radleys.' Ainsworth, also from the U.K., voiced Pinocchio in Disney+'s live-action 'Pinocchio' in 2022 and played Miles in Netflix's 'The Haunting of Bly Manor.' He also stars in the Canadian series 'Son of a Critch' and 2025's 'Everything's Going to Be Great.' The actors' young ages — 21 and 16 — have sparked fan speculation that the film may draw from 'The Wind Waker' or 'Ocarina of Time' games, which feature Zelda and Link as teens. While initially slated for a March 2027 release, production delays have shifted the film's launch to May 7, 2027. The project is helmed by director Wes Ball, known for the 'Maze Runner' trilogy and 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.' A huge fan himself, Ball told Entertainment Weekly in late 2023 that he wanted to create something more akin to 'a live-action Miyazaki' than 'Lord of the Rings.' 'That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that,' he told EW about the renowned Japanese animator. Avi Arad is also producing the film. The adaptation marks Nintendo's second big-screen foray after 2023's mega-sucessful 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie.' The animated movie grossed about $1.4 billion worldwide.

The live-action Legend of Zelda movie has cast its princess and hero

Nintendo has revealed the two lead actors for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. Bo Bragason is playing the title character, Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is taking on the role of Link, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced on X. The performers are around the right ages for their parts — Bragason was born in 2004 while Ainsworth is 16. These are by far the biggest roles to date for both actors, but they each have plenty of experience in front of cameras. Bragason has appeared in Disney+ fantasy series Renegade Nell and BBC crime drama The Jetty, as well as the very enjoyable horror movie Censor and Final Fantasy XV. As for Ainsworth, he voiced Pinocchio in Disney's 2022 live-action remake and appeared in Mike Flanagan's Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor. Miyamoto said he is "very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen." Sony Pictures is co-producing the film with Nintendo, while Wes Ball (the Maze Runner series) is directing it. The Legend of Zelda is on track to hit theaters on May 7, 2027. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience. (2/2) — 任天堂株式会社 (@Nintendo) July 16, 2025
