The burst 750mm pumping main along Jalan Batu Kawa-Matang near Emart Moyan. KUCHING (Aug 7): Ongoing repair works on a major 1100mm Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pumping main along Jalan Matang, near Taman Heng Guan here were temporarily halted today due to unforeseen technical challenges. In a statement, Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (formerly Laku Management Sdn Bhd) said the repair operation was suspended around 3.30am due to complications involving dewatering, poor site conditions, and other technical issues. The company said repair works will resume once the site is stabilised and all necessary safety measures, especially around nearby Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) cables, are in place to ensure the safety of workers and surrounding infrastructure. In a separate incident, Sarawak Water reported a second incident involving a burst 750mm MSCL pumping main near Emart Moyan along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa stretch at about 11pm on Wednesday. 'The affected pipeline was immediately isolated to prevent further road damage and flooding in the vicinity. Repair works commenced at 12pm this afternoon and are expected to be completed by 4am (Aug 8),' the company added. In a statement today, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said several uncovered or unsecured manholes were discovered during recent ground inspections. While MBKS continues to monitor and maintain manholes under its jurisdiction, he noted that some of the affected manholes fall under the responsibility of other utility providers. 'The matter requires urgent collective action to prevent accidents and ensure public safety,' he said. According to Wee, the manholes in question are under the purview of agencies such as Telekom Malaysia, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak, and the Kuching Water Board. MBKS has officially written to Telekom Malaysia, SEB, and DID Sarawak, urging them to inspect and replace all missing or damaged manhole covers without delay. Emphasising that public safety remains MBKS' top priority, Wee said it is crucial for the issue to be addressed before any untoward incidents occur. 'I trust the relevant agencies will act promptly and responsibly,' he said. He also assured the public that MBKS will continue its routine inspections of public infrastructure. At the same time, he encouraged the public to report any open or damaged manholes via the Talikhidmat platform, the iPeople mobile application, or by contacting MBKS directly. 'Let us work together to ensure Kuching remains a safe and liveable city for everyone,' said Wee. lead manhole MBKS Wee Hong Seng

Mum's horror as man 'abducts screaming son from outside home and then calls her'

A British mum has been left heartbroken after her son was abducted from outside her home, by a man thought to be his father, an urgent press conference in Bali has heard. Lawyers acting on behalf of Kathryn Dench, 41, say that her six-year-old son, who can only be named by his initials SEB for legal reasons, was snatched on April 21. He was reportedly taken by a white man, believed to be his 45-year-old father, and an Indonesian man who helped him, reporters were told during a conference on Saturday, July 19. The child was seen screaming as he was put into a car and driven away, Kathryn said during the conference. And in the weeks since, lawyers say the devastated mother has only had six calls with her son and does not know where he is. During the conference, she pleaded to her son: "He is being so incredibly brave, and I want him to know that we are fighting every day so that he will be able to come home." Speaking of the ordeal, she said: "The whole experience has been devastating – there is no other way to describe it. "The initial shock of my son being taken, and not even knowing who took him until the next day, was terrifying. "After that, although I was initially allowed a few video calls with him, our communication was heavily monitored and controlled, so we were not able to speak freely. "Seeing my child tense and withdrawn, and not being able to comfort him or hear how he is feeling, was heartbreaking. "Now, we are no longer permitted any kind of contact, and are completely in the hands of the legal system with no idea when this will be resolved." Kathryn and her son's father, who is from Solihull in Birmingham, split up when their son was around one year old. Police in Indonesia are now working to try and find Kathryn's son. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Denpasar City Police, quoting LP/B/299/IV/2025/SPKT/Polresta Denpasar/Polda. "I fully respect the legal system here in Indonesia, which has full jurisdiction over this case," she said. "The hardest part is not being able to comfort my son or even tell him how hard we are fighting for him right now. I hope that there are no more delays before the authorities take the appropriate action." Kathryn, who was born in London and grew up in Ipswich, reported the situation to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London and the British Embassy in Indonesia within 24 hours. She said: "Their role is limited in cases like this because they cannot intervene in another country's legal process. "In Indonesia, the law is clear that anyone who removes a child from the care of their legal custodian, without permission, is breaking the law. "But in reality, cases of parental abduction like this are often not treated seriously or enforced quickly enough. "A group of five mothers worked hard to get this clarified by the Constitutional Court – but even with that progress, many of us are still told that our best chance of seeing our children again is to drop the charges and agree to whatever the abductor wants. "A lack of enforcement of the law in these cases continues to put other children at risk, as potential perpetrators feel they will be immune from any legal consequences." A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are providing consular assistance to a British national in Bali and are in contact with the local authorities."

Sapura Energy nets over RM500m in Thai offshore jobs from Chevron, PTTEP

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 — Sapura Energy Bhd (SEB) has secured two contracts from its long-term clients in Thailand, with a combined value exceeding RM500 million. SEB group chief executive officer Muhammad Zamri Jusoh said the awards build upon SEB's long-standing partnership with clients in Thailand, given the group's proven track record for similar offshore campaigns in the kingdom. 'It also demonstrates our strategy of bidding for projects that are aligned to the group's risk appetite, core capabilities, and vessel deployment efficiency,' he said in a statement today. SEB said the contracts were awarded to its wholly owned subsidiary Sapura Energy (Thailand) Ltd (SETH), for an installation and removal campaign, and subsea inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM) services. It added the installation and removal contract, awarded by Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production Ltd and Chevron Offshore (Thailand) Ltd is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. SEB said the offshore installation and removal campaign will be executed by the group's engineering and construction team. Meanwhile, the service orders for SEB's subsea IRM services were awarded by PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Ltd (PTTEP) with the scope of work comprising saturation diving operations for facilities in the offshore petroleum blocks in the Gulf of Thailand (G1/61 and G2/61 projects). SEB said these operations would be executed by the group's operations and maintenance business segment, using SEB's dedicated subsea construction vessel, Sapura Constructor, equipped with accommodation for 120 personnel and diving support facilities for up to 15 divers. 'The works for subsea IRM have commenced in the second quarter of 2025. SEB is already doing subsea IRM works for PTTEP in Malaysia,' added the group. — Bernama
