How long will your Galaxy Z Fold 7 screen last? That depends on where you live.

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung Display has revealed more details about the Galaxy Z Fold 7 screen's durability in extreme temperatures. Samsung told Android Authority that the folding screen is rated for 60,000 folds at -20 degrees Celsius and 300,000 folds at 60 degrees Celsius. This is a two-fold increase over the Galaxy Z Fold 5's folding screen durability in extreme temperatures. Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 7 earlier this month, and it also revealed that the folding screen is rated to withstand 500,000 folds. However, history tells us that these screens don't last as long in extreme conditions, and we now have more details. We asked Samsung Display about the Galaxy Z Fold 7's screen durability in cold conditions. The company told us that Bureau Veritas rated the inner screen for 60,000 folds at -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). This doesn't sound like much, but it's a massive improvement over a couple of years ago. Back in 2023, Samsung Display disclosed that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5's inner screens were rated for 30,000 folds at -20 degrees Celsius. Your foldable phone display will clearly have a significantly shorter shelf life if you live in an extremely cold place, but the Z Fold 7 still offers a meaningful durability upgrade. That 60,000-fold figure equates to 30 folds a day for just over five years or 40 folds a day for a little more than four years. However, it also means 100 folds a day for just over 18 months. What about using the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in a hot climate? Samsung Display also told Android Authority that the Fold 7's folding screen is now rated to withstand 300,000 folds at 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit). That's double the Fold 5 and Flip 5's 150,000 folds at the same temperature. Samsung's foldable safety guide also notes that its devices should only be used in temperatures from 0 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit to 95 degrees Fahrenheit): Using or storing the device outside of the recommended temperature ranges may damage the device or reduce the battery's lifespan. Nevertheless, I'm glad Samsung Display improved the durability of the Galaxy Z Fold 7's folding screen. After all, millions of people live in areas that frequently drop below or exceed this recommended temperature range. iPhone Fold won't break the mold — here's why that won't matter

The impending release of the iPhone Fold will arguably be the biggest shakeup to the iPhone lineup in years. Normally a new Apple product means some new innovation that alters the way rival products are made and sold afterwards. But according to Mark Gurman, the first foldable iPhone may not be as innovative as some might hope — at least not at first. As Gurman points out, a lot of Apple's new products arrive fairly early on — even if Apple is rarely the first to market. That's being turned on its head with foldables, since they've been around since in 2018, and the market is pretty much dominated by Samsung. With that in mind, Gurman claims Apple won't be releasing a "radically new interface or transformative hardware." Instead we're looking at something that isn't going to look too dissimilar to a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. The foldable is said to come with the same core components including, as has previously been reported, a foldable OLED screen made by Samsung Display. Considering how well made the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is, Gurman notes that "Samsung has already taken care of much of the heavy lifting," meaning, "Apple's first foldable won't break any technological barriers or redefine the category." Which may not matter. Not only does Apple command intense brand loyalty, it's also pretty skilled in the marketing department. That means there's already an established market of people that could potentially pick up the iPhone Fold. Including plenty of people who may already want one of the best foldables, but aren't willing to swap to Android. Still, Gurman is quick to point out the phone won't just be a "carbon copy" of the Z Fold 7. He reiterated previous reports, noting Apple is focussed on fixing some of foldables' biggest issues. That includes making the crease less prominent and improving the design of the hinge — not to mention the software features coded into iOS. This, of course, doesn't discount the possibility Apple will be more innovative with future foldable devices. The upcoming iPhone Fold screen sizes leak

Apple is rumored to be finally stepping into the foldable smartphone game next year - we'll be calling its first such device the iPhone Fold but don't take this for granted, we don't really know the name yet. Today in China, the prolific leaker who goes by Digital Chat Station on Weibo has revealed the iPhone Fold's screen sizes. The inner, folding display is allegedly going to be 7.7", while the cover screen will be 5.5". That implies quite a different aspect ratio from what we're used to in the Android world. It's definitely not going to be the biggest book-style foldable around, that's for sure, but Apple will undoubtedly emphasize its better pocketability and usability with one hand in its marketing materials. DCS also once again confirms the 2026 release of the device. Past rumors have claimed that the device has already entered prototype testing, with a functioning prototype already created. It may or may not sport an under-display selfie camera for the folding screen, but has been consistently rumored to have a practically crease-free design. This is allegedly the main reason why Apple took so long to join the foldable game - its pursuit of a creaseless screen, and Samsung Display has now finally obliged. Source (in Chinese)

Samsung's latest foldable OLED sets new benchmark, proves durable in 500,000-fold test

South Korean smartphone giant Samsung seems to be leading in the foldable OLED display market. The company, on Wednesday, July 23, announced that its latest foldable OLED panel stays intact even after a 500,000-fold durability test. The OLED panel was tested by Bureau Veritas, a certification company. Samsung Displays raised its internal durability testing standard from 200,000 to 500,000 folds, which is two times more than their previous benchmark. The OLED panel used for this testing is built into the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. This exceptional durability is made possible by the Samsung display's newly developed architecture that is shock resistant and is inspired by the core principles of bulletproof glass, which increases the lifespan of foldable devices. This test was conducted by Bureau Veritas, where they mentioned that over the span of 13 days at 25°C, the panel remained fully functional even after 500,000 folds. The lifespan of foldable smartphones is no longer limited by durability. 500,000 folds mean that the device could last about 10 years for those who, on average, fold 100 times a day and over six years for those folding more than 200 times per day. The company has opted for a titanium plate to support the display. They also added a new flattening structure to disperse shock uniformly throughout the panel. The titanium plate is more protective and has a smaller form factor than other materials because it is lighter and thinner while yet offering excellent strength. 'As foldable OLED enters its seventh year of commercialisation, we've achieved another meaningful breakthrough in both durability and design. This new panel not only builds consumer confidence in foldable OLED durability but also underscores the technological advantage that makes Samsung Display distinguished in the industry,' said Hojung Lee, executive vice president and head of the Mobile Display Product Planning Team at Samsung Display. As mentioned above, the new OLED panel is inspired by bulletproof glass. And, to build one, an individual would require several layers of reinforced glass and plastic sheets. The flexibility of the outer layer of glass absorbs a large portion of the impact energy when a bullet hits the surface, preventing penetration. This design concept is adopted in the OLED panel by applying a new high-elastic glue to every layer within its OLED screen and thickening its outermost UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) by 50%. Samsung Display implemented this idea, providing more than four times the recovery performance over the prior material. The panel's capacity to withstand external impact is greatly increased by these improvements.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Display Can Be Folded 500,000 Times, According to Testing

Fold, fold and fold again. It doesn't matter how many times you fold the Galaxy Z Fold 7 open and closed -- it's highly unlikely to give out on you. Samsung Display (SDC) announced Tuesday that its latest foldable OLED panel "remained fully functional after a 500,000-fold durability test," more than doubling its previous benchmark of 200,000 folds. The company says this screen is the one you can find on Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 phone. Bureau Veritas, a French leader in testing, inspection, and certification, tested the screen with 500,000 folds over a 13-day period at a temperature of 25°C (77°F). For those of you trying to wrap your head around the math, half a million folds translates to the average user folding their phone 100 times a day for 10 years, or prolific users doing 200 folds a day for 6 years. Samsung Display -- a separate company from Samsung itself -- says the durability results prove that "durability is no longer a limiting factor in the lifespan of foldable smartphones." "As foldable OLED enters its seventh year of commercialization, we've achieved another meaningful breakthrough in both durability and design," Hojung Lee, EVP at Samsung Display, said in a press release. "This new panel... builds consumer confidence in foldable OLED durability." Bulletproof glass technology has helped Samsung Display develop its creaseless screens. SDC borrowed from the concept and increased the thickness of its Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) -- the outermost glass on the screen -- by 50%. SDC also added high-elastic adhesive to each screen layer, thereby enhancing fold recovery performance by four times the previous design. CNET reported last week that Apple has tapped Samsung Display to manufacture screens for Apple's first foldable iPhone, set to launch in summer 2026. With the era foldable phones upon us, these are the best ones in 2025.
