Ex-BIGBANG's T.O.P admits past mistakes for first time through ‘failed drug addict' character: ‘I can finally move on with my life'
Ex-BIGBANG member T.O.P, who recently made his comeback to the spotlight with Netflix series Squid Game, may have shattered fans' hopes of a band reunion with his recent interview. The K-pop group went on an indefinite hiatus, having faced several controversies. T.O.P, aka Choi Seung Hyun, was at the peak of his stardom in his 20s and then came a big downfall that ruined his career. Back in 2016, the K-pop idol got embroiled in a drug scandal, and later, in 2017, he pleaded guilty. This led to a 10-month suspended jail sentence. He then eventually left BIGBANG and YG Entertainment. T.O.P hadn't spoken publicly or done interviews for over 11 years. But recently, during promotions for Squid Game 3 in Los Angeles, he decided to break his silence and admitted to his past mistakes for the first time. Thanos is a failed rapper and drug user. His role instantly became a popular choice among Squid Game fans. 'I think Thanos is a character that I had to have a lot of talks with Director Hwang to create,' the rapper said when asked to describe his character at Netflix FYSEE LA. 'We had a lot of talks down to the most minute details of this character. He's not an amazing rapper, he's more like a failed soul, a failed young person who's reliant on drugs. I looked up what happens when someone's addicted to those kinds of strong drugs.' The rapper had earlier called his return to the group 'shameful,' claiming he had hurt the reputation of the members. However, for the first time, he admitted to spiralling into tough times driven by anxiety and mood swings, and he took a chance to include those elements in the character of Thanos. 'I have made my mistakes in the past, and I have to come face to face with those mistakes when I was playing this character. So, I needed to muster up a lot of courage to take on this role,' he said. After his probation ended, T.O.P managed to work with BIGBANG again, but he received backlash and cancellation calls in return. Since 2023, he disappeared from the public eye, only to make a controversial return that proved to be a hit, and now he wants to open a new chapter in his life. 'Director Hwang gave me so much trust that I could have the confidence to play this role. While creating this character, Thanos, I could self-reflect about my past, and I think I can finally move on to a new chapter of my life. I learned a lot from this character,' he added. In 2017, the K-pop idol was convicted of marijuana use, with records suggesting it happened on three occasions. He was also discharged from the military and largely stayed off social media as well. Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk had to later step in to justify his casting, saying, 'The incident happened a long time ago, and the sentence was completed,' adding that he has seen many artists return to the spotlight after such incidents and that it might be an appropriate time for him to return to work.

Squid Game Season 3, the series finale, is being premiered shortly after its Season 2 debuted on Netflix on December 26. Netflix said that Squid Game Season 3 will premiere on the OTT platform on June 27. In its most recent post for Squid Game 3, Netflix said, 'Step into the games one last time. Squid Game Season 3. June 27.' In the Squid Game Season 3 teaser, Gi-hun finds himself back in the dorm after his collapsed revolt. Other players also return to the competition with the stakes higher than before. In a letter to fans, the writer-director of the web series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, said, 'The fierce clash between two (Gi-hun and Front Man) worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3.' If you thought the first two seasons were brutal, creator Hwang Dong Hyuk wants you to know it's just the start. 'In the case of Season 3, I wanted to introduce games that could really show the lowest bottom of human beings,' Hwang told ET. He added that since this season is the climax, with no plans of renewal in mind, he's pushing things to a whole new level to explore just how far people will go when forced to survive in extreme conditions. 'I wanted very intense games to bring out the bottom parts of human nature.' The upcoming season will see Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae) return to the game. The traumatic events of Season 2 and the chilling death of close friend Jung Bae still haunt him. While the emotional toll is high and will pretty much determine his gameplay this time, Hwang confirmed that the storyline won't be focusing on him much, as the spotlight will shine on the unborn baby of Myung Gi (played by Yim Si Wan), which will lead Si Wan's character to probably undergo a drastic and most shocking transformation in the story. 'Gi-hun goes through the most dramatic change… but look for Myung G's change as well,' he said. 'This baby plays a very important role in Season 3,' he teased. 'Not just for Jun Hee [Jo Yu Ri's character], but also for the fate of everyone inside,' Hwang continued. Hwang says since Season 2 skipped over those fears, the finale, 'will introduce games that could really infuse fear in people with sheer height.' Expect some characters to fall. To sum up the storyline, Season 1 showed competitors in a cutthroat, capitalist world vying to survive. Season 2 diverged into the rebellion territory, showing Gi Hun trying to fight back, but failing miserably in front of Lee Byung Hun. But Season 3 is different. This time, Hwang says the core idea is about holding onto humanity, even when the world tries to tear it away. 'I wanted to focus on how [people] have to preserve their humanity amidst this intense competition,' Hwang explained. The newly released poster backs it up with a room surrounded by wall paintings that feel straight out of a child's imagination. It shows Gi Hun leading the group of survivors with a determined look, while others behind him, Dae Ho, Myung Gi, Hyun Ju, Yong Sik, Geum Ja, Jun Hee, and Seon Nyeo, look terrified. However, his supposed ally Oh Young-il (Lee Byung-hun) slipped back into his covert role as the Front Man, quashing the uprising and killing Gi-hun's close friend Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan).
