Vidya Balan backs flexible working hours for new mothers amid Deepika-Vanga row

Amid the ongoing debate over eight-hour work shift for new mothers, actor Vidya Balan expressed her views on flexible working hours in the film industry. While backing actor Deepika Padukone's stand, she highlighted the need to adopt an empathetic work culture to support new mothers in film industry has witnessed a divided stance on working mothers ever since Deepika-Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 'Spirit' row. Vidya, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, emphasised how women are an integral part of the workforce in the film industry. She said, "There is conversation about how mothers need to have an option to work for fewer hours, flexible hours, right? And I think that's fair."advertisementThe actor further said, "Every industry is adopting those practices so that we don't lose out on new mothers, or women in the early years of them having children, so I think it's very important that we do have flexible working hours for women." Vidya also admitted that she is able to devote more working hours due to not having parental responsibilities. "With the kind of films that I do, we can't afford to shoot only for eight hours. I am not a mother, so I have all the time in the world to be doing a 12-hour shift," she director Anurag Basu also backed Deepika's choice for flexible working hours. In an interview with Firstpost, he said, "I also don't like long-hour shifts at work. My actors never complain about long hours or stress at work. So, I absolutely agree with what Deepika Padukone had to say. It's a film; I never give my actors a chance to complain about this."The debate around an eight-hour work shift was sparked after Deepika stepped out of Vanga's 'Spirit' with Prabhas. The issues with flexible working hours was one of the reasons behind the actor's exit from the ouster from the film led to actor Triptii Dimri being signed to play the lead role in the movie.- EndsTrending Reel

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors In the comic book source material, one of Peter Parker/Spider-Man's closest friends is Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch. Now the guy playing the latest live-action incarnation of the Human Torch, Joseph Quinn, says he wants a team-up with Tom Holland's Spidey. Read More: 'Fantastic Four' Early Reactions Are Overwhelmingly One-Sided Speaking at the world premiere of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" Monday night, Quinn gave his thoughts on the matter to The Hollywood Reporter. "That pairing makes sense to me and I think he's brilliant and I'm up for it," Quinn said. "I think we'd have a laugh. I've never met Tom and I think he's brilliant; his Peter Parker is the best one ever, I think he's our best-ever Spider-Man, so why not? Let's do it, get it moving." Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Marvel Quinn's words about Holland's Spider-Man are particularly gracious considering he actually auditioned for the role along with Holland. At #TheFantasticFour premiere, Joseph Quinn shows his excitement for the idea of teaming up with Tom Holland in future MCU projects. — The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) July 22, 2025 Unfortunately, if the two are going to team-up on the big screen, fans will likely have to wait at least a couple of years to see it. While Quinn will be joining the rest of the "Fantastic Four" heroes in next year's "Avengers: Doomsday," Holland will be a no-show for that event film. There is always the following year's "Avengers: Secret Wars," which will end the Multiverse Saga and somehow reboot the MCU. "Secret Wars" is scheduled to hit theaters December 17, 2027, meaning fans likely have at least two and a half years to wait for any possible Spider-Man/Human Torch team-up. That is, unless Quinn makes a surprise appearance in next year's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." With Jon Bernthal's Punisher already set to appear (and persistent rumors of Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk), a Human Torch team-up seems unlikely. But a future team-up would be a boon to comic book fans. In the source material the Human Torch and Spider-Man are such good friends, it was Spidey who replaced his buddy on the team when the Torch "died" in Jonathan Hickman's acclaimed "Fantastic Four" run. They also shared a team-up "Spider-Man/Human Torch" miniseries in 2005. "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" releases in theaters July 25. Tickets are on sale now. The film is directed by Matt Shakman. It stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, Julia Garner, Ralph Ineson, Mark Gatiss, and Sarah Niles More Comics: John Malkovich Cut From 'The Fantastic Four' DC Finds Its 'Wonder Woman' Reboot Writer

James Cameron to attach first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash to The Fantastic Four, film set to release ten years after its original date

James Cameron is following in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan, who premiered an exclusive first look at his upcoming film Odyssey only in cinemas. The acclaimed director is set to unveil the first trailer for his latest Avatar sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which will be attached to The Fantastic Four: First Steps set to release in theatres this weekend. The announcement was made via the official Avatar social media handles. Scheduled for a global release on December 19, 2025, Avatar: Fire and Ash marks the third chapter in Cameron's multi-billion-dollar sci-fi saga. The film was shot back-to-back with Avatar: The Way of Water, with production having started as early as 2017. Interestingly, the release will arrive exactly ten years after its original projected date of Christmas 2015. A first-look image, released Tuesday, offers fans a glimpse of the clan leader Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin. The story will continue the journey of Jake Sully and Neytiri, as the Na'vi confront a growing threat from the Ash People, a breakaway faction that has turned its back on Pandora's spiritual traditions. Meet Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Be among the first to watch the trailer, exclusively in theatres this weekend with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. — Avatar (@officialavatar) July 21, 2025 Also Read | The unique appeal of James Cameron's Avatar In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter last year, James Cameron shared early insights into the film while revealing its title. 'There are new cultures and settings and creatures, and new biomes. You will see a lot more of Pandora, the planet, that you've never seen before. The new film is not what you expect, but it's definitely what you want,' said Cameron. Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to take a darker and more mature turn than its predecessors, with sources close to the production suggesting it will explore themes of violence, grief, and consequences. The title itself hints at this shift, if fire symbolizes hatred, rage, and destruction, then ash represents what remains: the grief, loss, and emotional fallout. Following Fire and Ash, 20th Century Studios has two more Avatar sequels in the pipeline. Avatar 4 is currently slated for release on December 21, 2029, with Avatar 5 expected to arrive on December 19, 2031.

Adria Arjona joins The Thomas Crown Affair cast

Adria Arjona is to star in The Thomas Crown Affair. The 33-year-old actress has been cast alongside Michael B. Jordan in the new take on the romantic heist movie that is being directed by the Sinners star. Taylor Russell had been set to appear with Michael in the movie - which is slated for release in March 2027 - but dropped out of the project due to "creative differences". Adria joins an ensemble cast that included Sir Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbaek and Aiysha Hart. The new project is the third The Thomas Crown Affair movie, with the original 1968 flick starring Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen before the picture was remade in 1999 featuring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. The Fall Guy scribe Drew Pearce has written the script for the new movie after a previous draft had been penned by Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo serve as producers for Outlier Society alongside Charles Rogen for Atlas Entertainment. Alan Trustman, who wrote the screenplay for the original The Thomas Crown Affair film, serves as an executive producer on the latest flick. The upcoming movie takes place in Europe, and the art of thieving remains a central theme of the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Brosnan had expressed his support for the new remake earlier this year and wishes Michael "every success" with the movie. The former James Bond actor told GQ: "Oh, Michael is such a gifted actor, and it's all his for the doing and the taking. It is. Yeah, why not? I really love heist movies, it's why I made the remake and the timing for me was perfect in the days that were of MGM and James Bond. So, yes, good luck. I wish him every success." Adria has previously starred in movies such as Hit Man and Blink Twice and recalled how she was "saved" by attending Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City during her teenage years as she sought a career in the profession. She told Collider: "Acting school kind of saved me. "I had a pretty rough upbringing. There were parts there that were not the happiest, and acting really came in and saved me and taught me how to express myself through what I do." Adria explained that she has embraced the opportunity to "play different characters". The Andor star said: "Every job you take, you're telling a story to the world of the kind of artist that you are, so you have to stick to your guns and be really truthful to what you believe in. "It's mostly, also, for me, to not be bored, right? To play different characters and to show the world that I'm more than just one thing." However, she previously admitted that she would like to be more "strategic" when it comes to making career choices. Adria said: "I wish I was more of a strategic actor when it comes to making choices. But I'm just more excited by the women that I get to embody."
