AI-Generated Media Now A Real Business Threat

Trend Micro has released a new report exposing the scale and maturity of deepfake-enabled cybercrime. As generative AI tools become more powerful, affordable, and accessible, cybercriminals are rapidly adopting them to support attacks, ranging from business fraud to extortion and identity theft. The report shows how deepfakes have moved beyond hype into real-world exploitation, undermining digital trust, exposing companies to new risks, and accelerating the business models of cybercriminals. David Sancho , senior threat researcher at Trend: 'AI-generated media is not just a future risk, it's a real business threat. We're seeing executives impersonated, hiring processes compromised, and financial safeguards bypassed with alarming ease. This research is a wake up call—if businesses are not proactively preparing for the deepfake era, they're already behind. In a world where seeing is no longer believing, digital trust must be rebuilt from the ground up.' The research found that threat actors no longer need underground expertise to launch convincing attacks. Instead, they are using off-the-shelf video, audio, and image generation platforms, many of which are marketed to content creators, to generate realistic deepfakes that deceive both individuals and organizations. These tools are inexpensive, easy to use, and increasingly capable of bypassing identity verification systems and security controls. The report outlines a growing cybercriminal ecosystem where these platforms are used to execute convincing scams, including: CEO fraud has become increasingly harder to detect as attackers use deepfake audio or video to impersonate senior leaders in real-time meetings. Recruitment processes are being compromised by fake candidates who use AI to pass interviews and gain unauthorized access to internal systems. Financial services firms are seeing a surge in deepfake attempts to bypass KYC (Know Your Customer) checks, enabling anonymous money laundering through falsified credentials. The criminal underground is actively trading tutorials, toolkits, and services to streamline these operations. From step-by-step playbooks for bypassing onboarding procedures to plug-and-play face-swapping tools, the barrier to entry is now minimal. As deepfake-enabled scams grow in frequency and complexity, businesses are urged to take proactive steps to minimize their risk exposure and protect their people and processes. This includes educating staff on social engineering risks, reviewing authentication workflows, and exploring detection solutions for synthetic media.

Deepfake & AI crime surge poses major threat to business trust

Trend Micro has released a new report outlining the increasing adoption of generative AI and deepfake technologies by cybercriminals, highlighting growing risks in business fraud, identity theft, and online extortion schemes. Deepfakes move to the mainstream The report indicates that deepfake-enabled cybercrime has developed in both scale and maturity, with generative AI tools now being used for various malicious purposes. These tools, originally intended to assist content creators, are now leveraged by cybercriminals to impersonate executives, circumvent established financial controls, and compromise internal human resource processes. According to the research, the accessibility and affordability of AI-generated media have significantly lowered the barrier to entry for cybercriminals. Off-the-shelf platforms producing video, audio, and image deepfakes are now readily obtainable, requiring little technical expertise on the part of users. As a result, digital trust and the reliability of traditional identity verification systems are being challenged by increasingly convincing synthetic media. Andrew Philp, ANZ Field CISO at Trend Micro, said, "AI-generated media is not just a future risk, it's a real business threat. We're seeing executives impersonated, hiring processes compromised, and financial safeguards bypassed with alarming ease. This research is a wake up call - if businesses are not proactively preparing for the deepfake era, they're already behind. In a world where seeing is no longer believing, digital trust must be rebuilt from the ground up." Research findings documented in the report confirm that attackers can now easily access guides, toolkits, and off-the-shelf solutions intended for content creation but re-purposed for cybercriminal activity. These resources are being actively traded within criminal communities, providing step-by-step techniques for bypassing onboarding checks and utilising plug-and-play deepfake solutions that make sophisticated attacks available to less-experienced perpetrators. Business risks and real-world impacts The application of deepfake technologies has been noted in several key areas highlighted by Trend Micro's report. In the financial sector, there has been a rise in attempts to use AI-generated media to bypass Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, facilitating anonymous money laundering activities through the use of falsified identification documents and credentials. Businesses are also facing CEO fraud, where deepfake audio or video is used to impersonate senior executives. These attacks can take place in real time during meetings or conference calls, making detection increasingly difficult for unsuspecting teams. Such incidents expose companies to potential financial loss as well as reputational damage, as sensitive internal information may be compromised. The recruitment sector is another area singled out for concern. The report details cases where job applicants use deepfake video or audio to impersonate real candidates and pass interviews, thus gaining unauthorised access to confidential systems and data from within organisations. Growing and accessible cybercrime ecosystem The research describes a flourishing underground ecosystem built around the proliferation of these AI-powered tools. Tutorials and toolkits for crafting deepfakes and conducting scam operations are widely available, diminishing the need for technical proficiency. Face-swapping tools and voice clones are provided as services, making professional-grade results accessible with minimal investment. Trend Micro stresses that these trends represent an urgent need for businesses to adopt proactive measures. This includes updating authentication processes, educating employees about the risks of social engineering, and incorporating detection mechanisms for synthetic media into their cybersecurity strategies. Mitigation and staff awareness To address the evolving threat landscape, the report advocates for a comprehensive approach focused on minimising risk and protecting internal processes. Specific recommendations include regular staff training to recognise social engineering tactics, a review of existing security authentication protocols, and investment in technology capable of detecting deepfake media. Trend Micro's study serves as a reminder that as generative AI technology continues to advance and become more accessible, vigilance and adaptability will be critical components in maintaining organisational security and digital trust.

Trend Micro invests in Pacific as regional cybersecurity surges

Trend Micro is increasing its investment in the Pacific Islands after reporting 150% growth in the region during the last three years. The company's enhanced commitment follows its inaugural World Tour event in Suva, Fiji, where senior government officials acknowledged the organisation's contribution to national digital and cybersecurity strategies. Fiji's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Mr. Manoa Kamikamica, addressed attendees, stating, "I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Trend Micro team for bringing this important event to Fiji – an event that has traditionally been held abroad." He continued, "Events such as this are more than just conferences. They are platforms that bridge the gap between Government, Industry, and the Private Sector. I strongly believe that such public-private partnerships and collaboration are essential to designing sustainable, resilient and robust digital solutions for Fiji and the Pacific." Trend Micro has expanded its business revenue in the region significantly, and the company now forecasts its Pacific revenue to triple again by mid-2027. This projection is supported by ongoing digital transformation initiatives and increased investment in digital infrastructure across countries including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Tonga. Cyber risk response The Trend Micro 2025 Cyber Risk Index highlights that organisations across Asia-Pacific are dealing with "medium-level cyber risk". The report identifies unsecure assets, fragmented infrastructure, and persistent skills shortages as major ongoing challenges. This landscape is prompting governments to implement national cybersecurity strategies, develop cloud and data governance policies, and boost institutional investment in cyber resilience. Many Pacific nations are now establishing computer emergency response teams and designing policies focused on AI governance, privacy, and cloud adoption, reflecting the region's efforts to mitigate cyber threats amid ongoing digitalisation. Srujan Talakokkula, Managing Director, Trend Micro – Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Islands, outlined the company's approach: "We're partnering with national leaders, local enterprises, and industry stakeholders to strengthen the region's ability to detect, defend, and respond. Our regional growth and partnerships reflect this evolving environment: increasing demand, deeper public-private alignment, and rising recognition that cyber readiness is core to economic development." Local presence and partnerships In response to the evolving cyber threat landscape, Trend Micro is increasing its focus on local support and capability development. The company has put in place a dedicated Fiji-based team including account managers, engineers, and partner managers. It is also deepening collaborations with local partners such as Virtuaflex Fiji, Vodafone Fiji, and Datec Fiji to deliver in-market support. Technical workshops, partner enablement sessions, and assistance with government-led digital infrastructure projects form part of Trend Micro's ongoing activities in the Pacific Islands. As part of its commitment to bridging the regional cybersecurity skills gap, the company will hold Capture the Flag competitions in nine locations during July 2025, including Suva. These events are intended to provide hands-on cybersecurity training for students, professionals, and practitioners. Industry feedback "Trend Micro has been our strongest security partner for more than five years, with a strong focus on us as the customer," said Deepak Singh, Manager – IT Services, Vinod Patel. "The collaboration has enabled us to stay ahead of the curve and continuously explore how we can enhance IT security. Their responsiveness and customer-centric mindset are always top notch." Zainal Rahiman, Cyber Information Security Officer at Taukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), commented, "Partnering with Trend Micro has transformed our cybersecurity operations. Trend Vision One's seamless integration and real-time visibility enable us to protect our growing digital infrastructure in hours, not days. Its all-in-one platform simplifies endpoint protection, vulnerability management, and risk reporting - empowering our team to stay ahead of threats effortlessly." Strategic outlook Trend Micro's progress in the Pacific Islands is part of a wider strategy to embed cybersecurity at the heart of digital transformation decisions across the Asia-Pacific region. The company's focus on collaboration with policymakers, industry groups, and public sector leaders underpins this approach. Mr. Talakokkula said, "The Pacific is showing what's possible when leadership, policy, and partnership come together. We're proud to be part of the journey – investing not just in technology, but in long-term regional resilience. "We're deeply committed to helping our partners across Fiji, PNG, Vanuatu, Tonga and beyond to unlock the full potential of secure digital development, whether that's through expanding our regional channel ecosystem, nurturing local cybersecurity talent, or strengthening intelligence-sharing across the Pacific," Mr. Talakokkula finished.
