New career-best rating for Smriti Mandhana as No 1 ranking looms

Dubai, July 1 (UNI) India opener Smriti Mandhana has been rewarded for her recent century against England by reaching a new career-high rating on the updated ICC Women's T20I Batter Rankings.
Mandhana, who is the No.1 ranked ODI batter, took England to the sword with a superb innings of 112 in Nottingham recently and that helped the left-hander gain one place and move to third on the latest rankings for T20I batters.
It also sees Mandhana reach a new career-best rating of 771 points and close to within 23 points of No.1 ranked player Beth Mooney at the top of the charts for T20I batters.
Fellow Indian opener Shafali Verma gains one place to move to 13th on the same rankings list following her innings of 20 in the same match against England, while teammate Harleen Deol re-enters the batter rankings in equal 86th after a quickfire knock of 43.
England pacer Lauren Bell claimed three wickets in that Nottingham clash and the tall right-armer rises two spots to a career-best place of fourth on the latest rankings for T20I bowlers.
Pakistan spinner Sadia Iqbal remains at the top of the list for T20I bowlers, but it's tight at the top with just 44 rating point separating the top 10 players.
The final match of the T20I series between the West Indies and South Africa also sees a host of their players make some ground on the latest rankings, with Proteas young gun Miane Smit jumping from well outside the top 100 to 76th on the list for T20I batters following her half-century in that clash.
There are also gains for former South Africa skipper Sune Luus, who jumps nine spots to 31st on the list for T20I all-rounders following decent efforts with both bat and ball in that Cave Hill match.

Gill matches Gavaskar, Hazare, Azhar with historic hundreds

Birmingham, July 2 (UNI) Shubman Gill has carved a special place in Indian cricket history by becoming only the third Indian captain to score centuries in consecutive Test matches against England, joining the legendary Vijay Hazare and Mohammad Azharuddin in this rare feat. Gill's latest hundred came in the second Test of the ongoing series, where he brought up his milestone with a powerful sweep shot for four off Joe Root. The young captain erupted in celebration- a loud roar, a raised helmet, a bow to the spectators, and a kiss to his bat- capturing the emotion of the moment and the significance of the achievement. It was his seventh Test century and his second in as many matches of the series, reinforcing his growing stature as a reliable leader and batsman. His performances have evoked memories of Hazare's back-to-back tons in Delhi and at Brabourne in 1951–52, and Azharuddin's memorable centuries at Lord's and Old Trafford in 1990. Gill's back-to-back hundreds come in challenging English conditions, making his achievement even more impressive and meaningful. Gill has also joined the elite list of Indian batsmen who have scored centuries in three consecutive Tests against England, a group that features Mohammad Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Rahul Dravid. The latest century further strengthens Gill's position as one of the most consistent performers in the current Indian Test setup. In addition to this historic feat, Gill becomes only the fourth Indian to score centuries in his first two Tests as captain. He follows in the footsteps of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli- the latter having scored three hundreds in his first two Tests as skipper. The landmark highlights Gill's seamless transition into leadership and the promise he holds for the future of Indian cricket. With these performances, Gill is not just scoring runs- he is leading by example. His composed batting under pressure and expressive celebrations have added energy to the Indian side. As India aims to assert dominance in the remainder of the series, their young captain's form and fearlessness may well become the defining story of the summer. UNI BDN RKM

'He is very clear in his head': Yashasvi Jaiswal defends Shubman Gill as captain after 'incredible' century

Yashasvi Jaiswal praised Shubman Gill's batting and leadership after Day 1 of the 2nd Test against England at Edgbaston. Gill remained unbeaten on 114 as India finished on 310/5. Jaiswal, who scored 87, also spoke about the pitch and India's cautious approach. read more Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal praised captain Shubman Gill after the first day of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Speaking at the press conference, Jaiswal said Gill is doing a great job as both a captain and a batter. He was asked about Gill's batting and captaincy in the series. 'It's amazing to see the way he has been batting. Incredible innings. As a captain also he has been amazing. He is very clear in his head what he wants to do with the team. We are very confident about our plans,' Jaiswal said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 114 at the end of Day 1, helping India reach 310 for 5. Jaiswal also played a strong innings, scoring 87 before getting out to a wide ball from Ben Stokes. Jaiswal on his batting and pitch 'It is disappointing to get out like that but it is part of game. But I want to enjoy the game at the same time. I try to find a solution what can be good in this situation (when he is challenged). Plans are always in the mind," Jaiswal said about his own batting after he fell short of a century by just 13 runs. 'I really enjoyed batting. Initially, I was playing the session and they were bowling well. The wicket was damp. Compared to Leeds, there is less seam movement and bounce here,' he added. Apart from Gill and Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja, Karun Nair, and Rishabh Pant also contributed. Jadeja remained unbeaten at 41 off 67 balls, while Nair and Pant contributed with 31 and 25 runs respectively. India's selection call raises questions India adopted a measured approach with the bat after picking three all-rounders in the playing eleven at the cost of specialist bowling resources, raising plenty of questions. Like Leeds, the Edgbaston surface is offering plenty of runs and with no Jasprit Bumrah in the attack, India would need to put up a total in excess of 500 to make a match of it. With premier match winner Bumrah rested from the game, India brought in Akash Deep in his place while making two interesting changes, leaving out Sai Sudharsan for Washington Sundar and replacing Shardul Thakur with Nitish Kumar Reddy. Kuldeep Yadav was once again ignored as India picked a second spinner in batting all-rounder Washington. For a team that struggled to take 20 wickets at Leeds, the decision to shore up the batting was debatable. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD (With agency inputs)

Yashasvi Jaiswal. (PIC - X) New Delhi: Indian team's young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has missed out on a big achievement in his Test career. This left-handed batsman had a chance to complete the fastest 2000 Test runs for India in the first innings of the second Test being played against England at Edgbaston. But Yashasvi could not do so by just 10 runs. Whose record could have been broken by Yashasvi Jaiswal? Yashasvi got out after scoring 87 runs. So now he has 1990 runs in 39 innings of Tests. If he had scored 10 more runs, he would have become the fastest Indian to score 2000 runs. By doing this, Yashasvi would have also broken the record of Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. Sehwag-Dravid had achieved this feat in 40 innings. Now if Yashasvi has done it in 39 innings only. Who are the two players and when did they achieve their record? Rahul Dravid did this feat against New Zealand in Hamilton in 1999 and Virender Sehwag did this feat against Australia in Chennai in 2004. Yashasvi made his Test debut against West Indies in July 2023 at Roseau and has scored 1990 runs in 39 innings so far. His average is 52.86. Who are the fastest Indian batters to score 2000 Test runs? Rahul Dravid – 40 innings (New Zealand, Hamilton, 1999) Virender Sehwag 40 innings (Australia, Chennai, 2001) Vijay Hazare – 43 innings (West Indies, Port of Spain, 1953) Gautam Gambhir – 43 innings (New Zealand, Napier, 2009) Sunil Gavaskar – 44 innings (West Indies, Port of Spain, 1976) How was Yashasvi Jaiswal's performance? Yashasvi had performed brilliantly in the first Test as well and scored 101 runs (159 balls, 16 fours and 1 six) in the first innings. However, in the second innings, he could score only 4 runs and was dismissed by Brydon Curse. However, after contributing in batting, Jaiswal will also have to focus on his fielding. In the Leeds Test, he dropped four easy catches which affected the result of the match.
