Proton, Grab Malaysia expand partnership with more car models and e-hailing perks

The Star27-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd and Grab Malaysia have expanded their partnership to offer more car models, including the Proton S70 and X-Series, with added benefits for Grab drivers.
In a statement, Proton said the partnership builds on the success of the 'Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners' campaign launched in November 2024, which has so far generated 220 leads and resulted in 148 Proton Saga registrations.
The continued collaboration underscores the strong demand for Proton's models in the e-hailing segment and reinforces the shared goal of modernising Malaysia's ride-hailing with affordable and reliable cars.
Driver-partners can now choose from a wider range of Proton models, including GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-Seater) options.
The partnership also offers up to RM13,000 in cash rebates, a 5% service discount for two years or 40,000 km, and RM500 in fuel support to ease initial ownership costs.
'Our strengthened partnership with Grab Malaysia marks a crucial step in empowering the e-hailing sector. Proton is thrilled to make our S70 and premium X-series models more accessible to Grab drivers.
'For gig workers, this comprehensive programme extends beyond exclusive benefits to assurance of driving Proton cars. Its reliability and affordable maintenance costs are important factors for those who use cars as their primary working tools,' Proton Edar deputy director sales, Ong Chee Wooi said.
Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia's director of country operations and mobility, Rashid Shukor, said this collaboration made it easier for its driver-partners to access vehicles, enabling them to earn and support their families while meeting the growing demand for rides.
'With the expansion of our partnership – now extending to the S70 and premium X-series models —drivers now have the chance to elevate their driving experience, upgrade their vehicles, and cater to an even broader consumer base. We look forward to continuing this journey together to build a future where opportunities are accessible to all."

Proton International Corp eyes 6,000 export sales this year, targets tenfold growth by 2030

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Proton Holdings Bhd's international arm, Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB), is aiming for export sales of 6,000 vehicles this year. The company targets to double that figure next year and exceed 10 times that volume by 2030. It currently exports to 19 countries, Proton said in a statement today. PICSB chief executive officer Edmund Lim Meng Thong said the company has set ambitious targets for the next few years and is actively hiring more talent for its regional sales and marketing teams. 'We are also excited about the progress made at the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV), which will boost our production capability to meet growing international demand,' he said. With export sales identified as a key driver of future sales growth, PICSB is aiming to expand to the Global South while also continuing to oversee and develop sales and marketing efforts in existing overseas markets. After starting exports to Bangladesh in 1986, the national carmaker rapidly expanded its international reach, becoming the fastest-growing new car franchise in the United Kingdom by 1992, with annual sales reaching 15,000 units. By the early 2000s, Proton models were present in 64 countries globally, with the company then strategically shifting its focus to high-growth regional markets such as Asean, China, India, the Middle East, and North Africa. 'In 2025, Proton remains committed to expanding its global presence by introducing new models and technologies to international markets. 'As of this year, the company has exported 20,169 vehicles to 19 countries since 2020, making it the leading exporter of vehicles from Malaysia,' it said. Proton has announced that its Proton 7 is making an impact in export sales. Since 2020, Proton's top three exported models are the Proton Saga, with 10,998 units sold, followed by the Proton X50 with 3,986 units, and the Proton X70 with 3,316 units. It noted that the Proton 7 has risen to third place in export sales this year. 'Since its export began to Nepal and Trinidad & Tobago, a total of 233 units have been delivered. 'Since its launch in December 2024, the model has maintained strong sales with 916 units sold in May for domestic and international markets, bringing its total year-to-date (YTD) sales to 3,632 units,' Proton said. — Bernama

Vietnam's passport ranking rises to 84th in the world, unlocking new opportunities for global travel and integration

Vietnamese passport holders can now enter 51 destinations without a traditional visa - on par with several other developing nations. -- Photo: HANOI (Vietnam News/ANN): Vietnam's passport has climbed seven places to rank 84th out of 199 countries and territories in the Henley Passport Index for the third quarter of 2025, up from 91st earlier this year and 87th in 2024. The improvement, announced on July 22 by UK-based Henley & Partners, signals stronger global confidence in Vietnam and presents broader opportunities for its citizens in tourism, trade, and international integration. The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a visa, or with simplified procedures such as e-visas, visas on arrival, or electronic travel authorisations (ETAs). Vietnamese passport holders can now enter 51 destinations without a traditional visa - on par with several other developing nations. Though still ranked in the lower-middle tier globally, the recent jump reflects growing trust in Vietnam's foreign policy, administrative transparency, and international reputation. It is also one of Vietnam's most significant upward moves since Henley & Partners began tracking global passport access nearly two decades ago using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Vietnamese citizens can currently travel visa-free or with simplified entry to several Asean countries, including Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as well as to destinations in Africa, South America, Central Asia, and South Asia, such as Kenya, Panama, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, and the Maldives. In South-East Asia, Vietnam's passport ranks above Laos (92nd) and Myanmar (93rd), while Singapore remains at the top worldwide with visa-free access to 195 destinations. According to tourism and policy experts, a passport's ranking reflects more than mobility, it serves as a 'soft measure' of a country's political stability, global standing, and the trust placed in its citizens. The improvement also mirrors Vietnam's efforts in bilateral diplomacy, upgrades in e-passport systems, and negotiations for visa waivers with countries across Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Experts also noted the broader impact on outbound tourism. Visa-free access stimulates demand for international travel and enables Vietnamese tour operators to design more diverse and high-end packages. Better passport access allows students, businesspeople, and workers to engage internationally with greater ease, enhancing Vietnam's role as a contributor to global culture, trade, and diplomacy. As Vietnam continues to modernise its passport system and expand diplomatic ties, the rising passport ranking not only reflects progress but also serves as a gateway for millions to explore the world and represent their country with pride. According to the National Statistics Office, more than 4 million Vietnamese citizens traveled abroad in the first half of 2025, marking a 53.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024. - Vietnam News/ANN
