Is a Summer Rally on the Horizon in the U.S. Natural Gas Futures Market?

I asked if natural gas prices will remain elevated throughout 2025 in a May 13, 2025, Barchart article. I wrote:
The inventories, rig count, increased LNG demand, and price action during the slow shoulder season point to higher natural gas prices over the coming months. The peak demand season, when prices tend to reach annual highs, occurs in late Q3 and Q4. Given the bullish price trend, buying dips with tight stops could be optimal for natural gas over the coming weeks and months.

Nearby natural gas futures were at the $3.644 per MMBtu level on May 12, 2025. They were higher at near the $4 level on June 20.
U.S. natural gas futures are in a bullish trend in June 2025.
The daily chart of NYMEX natural gas futures for delivery in August at the Henry Hub shows the bullish price pattern since the April 24 low of $3.394 per MMBtu. The futures were trading at near the $4 level on June 20.
The longer-term chart displays a more significant bullish trend.
The monthly chart shows that natural gas futures have made higher lows and higher highs since trading at a $1.60 low in February 2024. The most recent continuous contract high was $4.908 per MMBtu in March 2025, which was less than half the level at the August 2024 high of $9.987, the highest price since July 2008.
A hot summer will increase natural gas demand
The 2024/2025 withdrawal season ended in March 2025. While natural gas prices tend to reach their highs during winter months, the spring tends to be a weak period for prices, as the shoulder season is when heating and cooling demand fall to annual lows.
As the natural gas market enters the peak cooling season during summer, demand should increase. U.S. natural gas inventories are higher than the five-year average but lower than the same time last year.
As the chart shows, natural gas stockpiles across the United States, at 2.802 trillion cubic feet, were 6.1% above the five-year average for the week ending June 13, 2025. However, they were 7.7% lower than last year's level. The stockpile levels support the price above $4 per MMBtu, but another factor could push prices even higher over the coming weeks and months.
The world's top ten natural gas-producing countries are:The chart indicates that the United States leads the world in natural gas production, followed by Russia in second place and Iran in third. Processing natural gas from a gaseous to a liquid form has increased its reach as LNG travels the world by ocean vessels.
The war between Iran and Israel is escalating in late June 2025, posing significant supply concerns for the LNG market from two perspectives. First, Iran is the third leading producing country, and war in the region has led to attacks on Iran's oil and gas infrastructure. Moreover, Iran's strategic position in the Persian Gulf, and most significantly in the Straits of Hormuz, a logistical chokepoint, could intensify the global LNG supply concerns, leading to higher demand for U.S. LNG and pushing domestic natural gas prices higher.
The most direct route for a risk position in the volatile U.S. natural gas market is the CME's NYMEX division futures and futures options contracts. The futures are highly volatile. Given the margin in the futures arena that increases leverage, the potential for price variance is exceptionally high.
The UNG ETF does an excellent job tracking U.S. natural gas futures on a short-term basis. The latest rally in August natural gas futures took the price 18.7% higher from $3.563 on June 11 to $4.230 per MMBtu on June 20.
Over the same period, UNG rose 15.4% from $15.70 to $18.12 per share. UNG underperformed natural gas futures because they reached their latest high on June 19 and early on June 20, a holiday in the U.S. when the stock market was closed.
Over the same period, the leveraged BOIL ETF product magnified UNG and the natural gas futures' price action.
The chart shows BOIL's 30.7% rally from $48.73 to $63.68 per share from June 11 through June 18.
At $60.90 per share, BOIL had nearly $280 million in assets under management. BOIL trades an average of over 2.86 million shares daily and charges a 0.95% management fee. As BOIL is a bullish, leveraged natural gas product, the KOLD ETF provides market participants with the opportunity for exposure on the short side of the U.S. natural gas market.
As natural gas futures move into the U.S.'s peak cooling season, supply concerns over worldwide LNG supplies have increased because of the ongoing war between Israel and Iran. Natural gas prices rallied to nearly $10 per MMBtu in August 2024. At near $4 in late June 2025, natural gas prices could have substantial upside potential over the coming days and weeks.
Meanwhile, leveraged products like the BOIL and KOLD ETFs require careful attention to risk-reward dynamics. Time and price stops will protect capital if natural gas prices move contrary to expectations or remain stable. Time decay tends to erode BOIL and KOLD prices as the ETF's employ swaps and options to create leverage. Another risk is that while natural gas futures trade around the clock, UNG, BOIL, and KOLD are only available during U.S. stock market hours. The ETF products can miss highs or lows occurring when the stock market is closed.
A summer rally could be on the horizon in the natural gas futures market, which has significant potential, as we saw in August 2024 when the price rose to nearly $10 per MMBtu.

Up 498% in the Past Year, Is It Too Late to Buy Palantir Stock?

Palantir Technologies (PLTR) cemented its place among America's tech royalty after jumping over 498% in the past 12 months alone and most recently overtaking blue-chip giants Procter & Gamble (PG) and Home Depot (HD) in market value. Led by historic government contracts and skyrocketing demand for its artificial intelligence-driven technology, the firm now exceeds over $375 billion in valuation and ranks among the top-20 most valuable publicly traded U.S. companies. The rally reflects investor confidence in the long-term health of Palantir's AI advantage in the defense and public spaces. Its Q1 report reinforced the optimism, with revenue from the U.S. government surging 45% year-over-year to $373 million. More News from Barchart Morgan Stanley Says Nvidia Has 'Exceptional' Strength. Keep up by reading our FREE midday Barchart Brief newsletter for exclusive charts, analysis, and headlines. Now, looking out to its next report on Aug. 4, the Street is looking to see if Palantir's remarkable breakout continues. About Palantir Stock Palantir Technologies (PLTR) is a leading developer of data analytics and AI software platforms. Its solutions support the U.S. and allied governments and commercial businesses in the defense, healthcare, energy, and financial services industries. The Denver, Colorado-headquartered company was founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel and Alex Karp. Over the past 52 weeks, shares of PLTR have risen from the lowest point of $21.23 to the all-time high of $160.89, set on July 31, an almost 500% surge in 12 months. The stock has doubled over the year to date. That outperformance comes at a cost. Palantir has a forward price-earnings ratio of 426.89x and trailing P/E of 1,302x. Its price-sales ratio is a mind-boggling 128.67x, and its price-book ratio is 66.8x. Those figures are far higher than industry multiples. Bull argue that the premium is justified given its dominance in the world of AI, but bears note the valuation presumes years of flawless execution ahead. Palantir Wins on Earnings as Government Revenue Grows Palantir's latest quarterly report shattered estimates. The firm's Q1 revenue reached $884 million and rose 39% year over year while net income reached $214 million. Revenue from the U.S. alone jumped 45%, and once again confirmed the ascendancy of Palantir in the field of national security and defense deployments. Entering Q2, Street revenue and EPS estimates stand at $939.3 million and $0.14, implying 38% and 54% year-over-year growth, respectively. These figures, should they come to pass, would further solidify Palantir's position as among the fastest-growing vendors in the market for AI infrastructure. Palantir will report its Q2 results on Aug. 4. Investors should watch for further updates on its commercial business growth, international expansion, new customer additions, and renewed, multi-year government contracts. What Do Analysts Expect for Palantir Stock? The consensus rating of Palantir stands at 'Hold,' with 21 analysts covering the stock. Its consensus price target is $110.72, which suggests the possibility of a decline of approximately 30% from the current levels of about $158. Although the top estimate remains at $170, the lowest target reduces to only $40, highlighting the valuation debate present over Palantir. Palantir's long-term success is dependent on sustained hypergrowth while defending its moat in the commercial and governmental sectors. A successful Q2 report would require analysts to revise their targets higher, but any missteps could trigger a selloff in PLTR. On the date of publication, Yiannis Zourmpanos had a position in: PLTR. Arabica Coffee Rises as Tariff Risks Remain

September arabica coffee (KCU25) today is up +2.70 (+0.92%), and September ICE robusta coffee (RMU25) is up +4 (+0.12%). Coffee prices today are moving higher. Arabica coffee is climbing today on tariff risks after President Trump delayed the implementation of 50% tariffs on Brazil exports by a week, and so far hasn't included coffee as a Brazilian commodity exempt from tariffs. Concerns remain that a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods could potentially raise coffee prices sharply and disrupt supplies from Brazil, the world's largest producer of arabica coffee. Keep up by reading our FREE midday Barchart Brief newsletter for exclusive charts, analysis, and headlines. Robusta coffee also has support due to crop concerns in Vietnam, following updated weather forecasts that eliminated the chance of rain in the country's coffee-producing regions this week. Vietnam is the world's largest robusta-producing country. An excessive short position by funds in robusta coffee could exacerbate any short-covering rally in robusta coffee futures. ICE Futures Europe reported last Friday that funds boosted their net-short positions in ICE robusta futures by 3,334 to 4,628 short positions in the week ended July 22, the most in two years. The ongoing Brazil coffee harvest is weighing on coffee prices. Brazil's Cooxupe coffee co-op announced Tuesday that its harvest among its members was 67% complete as of July 25. Cooxupe is Brazil's largest coffee cooperative and Brazil's largest exporter group. In related news, Safras & Mercado reported last Friday that Brazil's overall 2025/26 coffee harvest was 84% complete as of July 23, ahead of the comparable level of 81% last year and the 5-year average of 77%. The breakdown showed that 96% of the robusta harvest and 76% of the arabica harvest were complete as of July 23. Coffee prices have retreated over the past three months on the outlook for abundant coffee supplies. Earlier this month, arabica coffee tumbled to an 8-month low and robusta sank to a 1.25-year nearest-futures low. On June 25, the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) forecasted that Brazil's 2025/26 coffee production will increase by +0.5% y/y to 65 million bags and that Vietnam's 2025/26 coffee output will rise by 6.9% y/y to a 4-year high of 31 million bags. Brazil is the world's largest producer of arabica coffee, and Vietnam is the world's largest producer of robusta coffee. Recent rain in Brazil has eased dryness concerns and is bearish for coffee prices. Somar Meteorologia reported Monday that Brazil's largest arabica coffee-growing area, Minas Gerais, received 3.5 mm of rain during the week ended July 26, more than +200% of the historical average. On the bearish side for robusta is an increase in ICE-monitored inventories. Robusta coffee inventories rose to a 1-year high of 7,029 lots Monday. Conversely, ICE-monitored arabica coffee inventories fell to a 3.5-month low of 775,476 bags Wednesday. Smaller coffee exports from Brazil are positive for prices after Cecafe reported on July 16 that Brazil's total Jun green coffee exports fell -31% y/y to 2.3 million bags, with arabica exports down -27% y/y to 1.8 million bags and robusta exports down -42% y/y to 476,334 bags. Due to drought, Vietnam's coffee production in the 2023/24 crop year decreased by -20% y/y to 1.472 MMT, the smallest crop in four years. Also, Vietnam's General Statistics Office reported that 2024 Vietnam coffee exports fell by -17.1% y/y to 1.35 MMT. Additionally, the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association reduced its 2024/25 Vietnam coffee production estimate to 26.5 million bags on March 12, down from a December estimate of 28 million bags. By contrast, the Vietnam National Statistics Office reported on July 7 that Vietnam's Jan-Jun 2025 coffee exports were up +4.1% y/y to 943,000 MT. The USDA's biannual report, released on June 25, was bearish for coffee prices. The USDA's Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS) projected that world coffee production in 2025/26 will increase by +2.5% y/y to a record 178.68 million bags, with a -1.7% decrease in arabica production to 97.022 million bags and a +7.9% increase in robusta production to 81.658 million bags. The USDA's FAS forecasts that 2025/26 ending stocks will climb by +4.9% to 22.819 million bags from 21.752 million bags in 2024/25. For the 2025/26 marketing year, Volcafe projects a global 2025/26 arabica coffee deficit of -8.5 million bags, wider than the -5.5 million bag deficit for 2024/25 and the fifth consecutive year of deficits. Supply Concerns Push Cocoa Prices Sharply Higher

September ICE NY cocoa (CCU25) today is up +309 (+3.77%), and September ICE London cocoa #7 (CAU25) is up +186 (+3.40%). Cocoa prices are sharply higher today, with London cocoa posting a 4-week high. Cocoa prices have been supported this week on concern that the slowdown in the pace of Ivory Coast cocoa exports could tighten global supplies. On Tuesday, NY cocoa posted a 4-week high after Monday's government data showed that Ivory Coast farmers shipped 1.75 MMT of cocoa to ports this marketing year from October 1 to July 27, up +6.1% from last year but down from the much larger +35% increase seen in December. Subscribe today! Concerns about dry weather in West Africa are also bullish for cocoa prices. According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, rainfall in the Ivory Coast and Ghana this season remains below the 30-year average, and combined with high temperatures, risks hurting cocoa pod development for the main crop harvest that starts in October. A significant short position by commodity funds in London cocoa futures raises the potential for short covering. Last Friday, ICE Futures Europe reported that funds boosted their net-short London cocoa positions by 1,904 to 8,265 short positions the week ended July 22, the most in more than two years. Concerns over tepid chocolate demand are bearish for cocoa prices. Last Tuesday, chocolate maker Lindt & Spruengli AG lowered its margin guidance for the year due to a larger-than-expected decline in first-half chocolate sales. Also, chocolate maker Barry Callebaut AG reduced its sales volume guidance earlier this month for a second time in three months, citing persistently high cocoa prices. The company projects a decline in full-year sales volume and reported a -9.5% drop in its sales volume for the March-May period, the largest quarterly decline in a decade. Cocoa prices sold off earlier this month, with NY cocoa sinking to an 8-month nearest-futures low and London cocoa slumping to a 17-month nearest-futures low. Weakness in global cocoa demand has hammered prices. The European Cocoa Association reported on July 17 that Q2 European cocoa grindings fell by -7.2% y/y to 331,762 MT, a bigger decline than expectations of -5% y/y. Also, the Cocoa Association of Asia reported that Q2 Asian cocoa grindings fell -16.3% y/y to 176,644 MT, the smallest amount for a Q2 in 8 years. North American Q2 cocoa grindings fell -2.8% y/y to 101,865 MT, which was a smaller decline than the declines seen in Asia and Europe. In a bearish development, ICE-monitored cocoa inventories held in US ports reached a 10.5-month high of 2,368,141 bags last Tuesday. Higher cocoa production by Ghana is bearish for cocoa prices. On July 1, the Ghana Cocoa Board projected the 2025/26 Ghana cocoa crop would increase by +8.3% y/y to 650,000 from 600,000 MT in 2024/25. Ghana is the world's second-largest cocoa producer. Cocoa prices have support from quality concerns regarding the Ivory Coast's mid-crop cocoa, which is currently being harvested through September. Cocoa processors are complaining about the quality of the crop and have rejected truckloads of Ivory Coast cocoa beans. Processors reported that about 5% to 6% of the mid-crop cocoa in each truckload is of poor quality, compared with 1% during the main crop. According to Rabobank, the poor quality of the Ivory Coast's mid-crop is partly attributed to late-arriving rain in the region, which limited crop growth. The mid-crop is the smaller of the two annual cocoa harvests, which typically starts in April. The average estimate for this year's Ivory Coast mid-crop is 400,000 MT, down -9% from last year's 440,000 MT. On May 30, the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) revised its 2023/24 global cocoa deficit to -494,000 MT from a February estimate of -441,000 MT, the largest deficit in over 60 years. ICCO said 2023/24 cocoa production fell by 13.1% y/y to 4.380 MMT. ICCO stated that the 2023/24 global cocoa stocks-to-grindings ratio declined to a 46-year low of 27.0%. Looking ahead to 2024/25, ICCO on February 28 forecasted a global cocoa surplus of 142,000 MT for 2024/25, the first surplus in four years. ICCO also projected that 2024/25 global cocoa production will rise +7.8% y/y to 4.84 MMT.
