Russia claims capture of Chasiv Yar after 16-month battle
Russia's Defence Ministry said in a brief statement its forces had 'liberated' the town.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed the claim as 'disinformation'. A Ukrainian military spokesperson called it 'propaganda'.
But a video posted by a Russian military unit and verified by Reuters showed a Russian paratroop banner and the national flag being raised by soldiers in the desolate ruins of the town.
Russia has been slowly grinding forward in eastern Ukraine as talks to end the 3-1/2 year war have failed to make progress towards a ceasefire, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to threaten new sanctions on Russia and buyers of its exports from next week.
Moscow's forces are also mounting intense pressure on the city of Pokrovsk, 60 km (37 miles) southwest of Chasiv Yar.
Military analyst Emil Kastehelmi, co-founder of the Finland-based Black Bird Group, said it was likely that battles were continuing near Chasiv Yar.
'The terrain of Chasiv Yar has favoured the defender. Forested areas, waterways, hills and a varied building stock have enabled Ukraine to conduct a defensive operation lasting over a year, in which the Russians have made minimal monthly progress,' he told Reuters.
GRADUAL ADVANCE
Kastehelmi said it was likely that the town's fall, if confirmed, would create conditions for Russia to advance further in eastern Ukraine, but still only gradually.
'The fall of the city to the enemy is nevertheless a challenging situation for Ukraine, as it will bring the Russians closer to Kostiantynivka, which Russia is now approaching from several directions,' he said.
'The logistics in the area will also be affected, as Russians can bring drone teams even closer.'
Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, said Ukrainian units around Chasiv Yar were 'defending our positions. Every Russian attempt at advancing in Donetsk region, in Sumy, in Kharkiv is thwarted in the end.'
Quoting a report from top Ukrainian commander Oleksandr Syrskyi, Zelenskiy said the most intensive battles were still near Pokrovsk. Ukrainian forces, he said, were repelling Russian sabotage and reconnaissance parties.
The popular Ukrainian blog DeepState, which uses open source materials to track the movements of Russian forces, also denied that Moscow's forces were in control of Chasiv Yar.
The battle for Chasiv Yar began in April last year, when Russian paratroopers reached its eastern edge. Russian state media reported then that Russian soldiers had begun phoning their Ukrainian counterparts inside the town to demand they surrender or be wiped out by aerial guided bombs.
The town, now destroyed, had a pre-war population of more than 12,000 and its economy was based around a factory that produced reinforced concrete products and clay used in bricks.
It lies just west of Bakhmut, which Russia captured in 2023 after one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

'Only the MEC (Free State Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Saki Mokoena) can remove her as a councillor, which he won't do until there is a court finding. 'But the mayor (of Maluti-A-Phofung, Malekula Melato) has the power to replace her as MMC,' she explained. Motaung added that the mayor appointed her, and she can remove her. 'The DA will commit to monitoring the court proceedings until the matter is fully resolved.' Russian strikes kill six across Ukraine
Russian strikes across eastern Ukraine killed six people, including a mechanic at a railway station, and wounded at least a dozen people, authorities said Tuesday. "Russian terrorists inflicted a massive strike on the railway infrastructure of Lozova," the Ukrainian Railways company said in a Telegram post. Ukraine's railways have been heavily targeted by Russia's army throughout its invasion, launched in February 2022. Moscow has escalated aerial attacks ahead of a Friday deadline by US President Donald Trump to make progress towards peace or face massive sanctions. The nighttime strikes Lozova in the eastern Kharkiv region left a passenger train mangled and charred, and damaged the station building with a pile of rubble on the platform. Two people were killed in Lozova, Kharkiv Governor Oleg Synegubov said on Telegram. Among them was "a duty mechanic of one of the units," Ukrainian Railways said, adding that several trains have been rerouted. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 25 Iranian-designed Shahed drones at the city, striking civilian infrastructure. "The railway was damaged, including a depot and a station," he said on social media, adding that 10 people were wounded in the attack. Ukraine's air force said Russia fired 46 attack drones and one ballistic missile in the barrage -- down from the several hundred that Moscow has the capacity to launch. Lozova Mayor Sergiy Zelensky called the strike "the most massive attack" on the city since the beginning of the war. A separate Russian strike on Ukraine's northeast Sumy region killed two more people at an "agricultural enterprise", wounding three employees, authorities said. Moldova's pro-Kremlin regional leader jailed in election fraud case
A Moldovan court sentenced pro-Kremlin regional leader Evgenia Gutul on Tuesday to seven years in jail for channelling money from Russia to finance a political party. Gutul, who has strongly criticised Moldova's current pro-European government and has occasionally visited Moscow to meet top officials, denied any wrongdoing. She has been placed on the EU and U.S. sanctions lists on suspicion of destabilising Moldova. Prosecutors say Gutul systematically channelled undeclared funds into Moldova from 2019-2022 to finance the now-banned pro-Moscow 'Shor' party set up by Ilan Shor, an exiled pro-Russian businessman who has been convicted of fraud in Moldova. The prosecutors had been seeking a nine-year jail sentence for Gutul. The Kremlin condemned the sentence as politically motivated and accused Moldova of trampling on democracy. More than 100 people gathered in front of the court in the Moldovan capital Chisinau to support Gutul, the leader of Gagauzia, a small autonomous region whose 140,000 residents are mainly ethnic Turks. The crowd demanded freedom for Gutul, chanting 'Shame' and criticising the government. The sentence can be appealed.
