Bhubaneswar: Leader of opposition and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Sunday termed the stampede in Puri as a glaring incompetence by the govt in crowd management, while Congress attributed it to undue favour shown to BJP workers to gather around chariots.
"Today's stampede, occurring just a day after the abysmal failure of crowd management during the Rath Yatra that left hundreds injured, exposes the govt's glaring incompetence in ensuring a peaceful festival for devotees," Naveen wrote on X.
Quoting eyewitness reports, he added that the initial response to the tragedy came from the devotees' relatives, with no govt machinery present to manage the surging crowds, highlighting a shocking lapse in duty.
"The inordinate delay in pulling the Nandighosha chariot on Rath Yatra day was conveniently attributed to 'Mahaprabhu's Wish', a shocking excuse that masks the administration's complete abdication of responsibility. While I refrain from accusing the govt of criminal negligence, their blatant callousness undeniably contributed to this tragedy. I urge the govt to implement urgent corrective measures to ensure the smooth conduct of Adapa Bije, Bahuda, Suna Besha and other key #RathYatra rituals," Naveen wrote.

He said, "I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the three devotees who lost their lives in the tragic stampede at Saradhabali, #Puri, and I pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannatha for the swift recovery of the devotees injured in this devastating incident."
Echoing him, state Congress president Bhakta Charan Das said the entire arrangement for the festival, including security, was VVIP- and BJP worker-centric.
"It should have been devotee-centric, but it was not so. Thousands of BJP workers from all over the country made unauthorised entry close to the chariot perimeter, swelling the crowd and pushing other devotees to the brink. Uncountable delegates made their way into the VVIP dais as well.
It is highly condemnable," Das said.
BJP countered the opposition allegations and said that strong action was taken against the negligent officers and more action is awaited as an inquiry is underway. "The incident is being thoroughly probed. All lapses will be identified and negligence will not be viewed lightly," law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan told the media.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 30 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday celebrated the withdrawal of the three-language policy in the state and stated that they had punched Marathi haters, and the unity in the state should remain as it is. He further stated that a new committee led by Narendra Jadhav would report on the decision, further stating that the government had appointed financial experts for the decision in the education sector. 'We have punched Marathi haters; this unity should remain as it is. We appreciate the political parties which came together with us despite different stands. Temporarily, they (the Government) have cancelled the GR. If they hadn't cancelled, they would have seen the protest on 5th July. Many leaders from Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP are going to join us. A new committee led by Dr Narendra Jadhav will report on this. The government has appointed financial experts for the education sector's decision. We will stage a victory rally on 5th July,' Thackeray said, speaking to reporters here. 'The decision on the Three-Language Formula was taken by Uddhav Thackeray himself during his tenure,' Fadnavis said. Following the announcement, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray said that the government resolutions were cancelled solely due to the pressure from the Marathi people. 'The decision to impose the Hindi language under the pretext of teaching three languages from the first grade has finally been withdrawn. The government has cancelled the two GRs related to this. This cannot be called belated wisdom, because this imposition was withdrawn solely due to the pressure from the Marathi people. Why the government was so adamant about the Hindi language and who exactly was pressuring the government for this remains a mystery,' Raj Thackeray wrote on X. Raj Thackeray further defied the formation of the committee on the three-language policy, saying that they assume this decision has been permanently cancelled and the government shouldn't create 'confusion with the committee's report again.' 'One more thing: the government has once again appointed a new committee. I say clearly, let the committee's report come or not, but such actions will not be tolerated again, and that's final! The government should engrave this in their minds forever! We assume this decision has been permanently cancelled, and the people of Maharashtra have assumed the same.
