Morocco ex-football club chief jailed for fraud
Mohamed Boudrika, a former lawmaker for the ruling National Rally of Independents, was found guilty of fraud, use of forged documents and "issuing cheques without sufficient funds", lawyer Lotfi Youssef told AFP. He was also fined 500,000 dirhams (around $56,000).
Boudrika had been extradited from Germany earlier this year to stand trial.
He had been held in custody in Hamburg since July 2024 after an international arrest warrant was issued by Moroccan authorities.
His predecessor at the helm of Raja Casablanca, Aziz El Badraoui, has been in custody since February last year awaiting trial on corruption charges. — AFP

(AFP pic) TRIPOLI : Hundreds of thousands of Libyans are voting today in the second phase of municipal elections, held under tight security after incidents and irregularities forced delays at several stations. The elections are seen as a test of democracy in a nation still plagued by division and instability after years of unrest following the Nato-backed uprising that toppled long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Polling took place in around 50 municipalities, including the capital Tripoli, with some stations opening at 9am to serve 380,000 registered voters. A heavy police presence was deployed in the west by the Tripoli-based unity government. Since Gaddafi's overthrow, Libya has been split between the UN-recognised government in Tripoli, led by prime minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, and its eastern rival, backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar. After a first phase in November across 58 cities, the vote was initially scheduled in 63 municipalities – 41 in the west, 13 in the east and nine in the south. The high national election commission (HNEC) had to suspend elections in 11 municipalities, mostly in Haftar-controlled areas, due to 'irregularities' including unexplained halts in voter card distribution. Today, the commission also announced the postponement to Aug 23 of elections in seven more municipalities, mostly in the west, including four in the Zawiyah area, as well as Surman and Sabratha. The delays followed yesterday arson attacks that destroyed electoral materials in Zawiyah and Sahel al-Gharbi, 45km from Tripoli. And on Tuesday, the electoral body said a group of armed men attacked its headquarters in Zliten, some 160km east of Tripoli. It made no mention of any casualties, although the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said there were some injuries. 'These attacks, on the eve of polling day, threaten the conduct of the ongoing municipal elections and the broader democratic aspirations of the Libyan people,' UNSMIL said. 'Such criminal acts represent another grave assault on the electoral process and a blatant attempt to disenfranchise citizens, undermine their right to choose their representatives, and obstruct the democratic process,' the mission added. For Tripoli resident Esraa Abdelmomen, 36, a mother of three, the municipal elections were 'very important' because they determine who would manage the government-allocated funds. Following Gaddafi's fall in 2011, Libya held its first free elections in 2012 to select 200 members of the General National Congress. That was followed by nationwide municipal elections in 2013 and legislative polls in June 2014, which were marred by renewed violence and very low turnout. In some western municipalities, residents are voting in a local election for the first time since 2014.

Greece seizes record amount of narcotic leaf
ATHENS: Greece has made a record seizure of khat, confiscating half a tonne of the illegal plant-based drug, Athens airport said on Sunday. The drug is made from the leaves of the khat plant, native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. When chewed, khat releases chemicals similar to amphetamines, resulting in a mild high. Greece's state-run news agency said the seizure's size made it the largest haul ever confiscated in the country, with a value estimated at EUR1,500,000 ($1,750,000). According to the Athens News Agency, the illegal substance was hidden in four shipping containers declared to be holding curtains, sheets and fabrics, transiting from Israel and bound for the United States. Greece's previous record seizure was also confiscated at Athens International Airport, on December 4, 2014. Khat, also known as qat, is very popular in Yemen and Horn of Africa countries including Ethiopia and Somalia. Bali police arrest Peruvian over drugs smuggled in sex toy
DENPASAR, (Indonesia): A Peruvian woman has been arrested in Indonesia's Bali after allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine into the resort island using a sex toy and hiding drugs in her underwear, police said Tuesday (Aug 19). The 42-year-old, identified only by her initials N.S., arrived at Bali's international airport from Qatar on August 12 when authorities became suspicious. "The customs officers suspected her behaviour, and after consulting with the police, they did a further check on her," Bali police narcotics unit director, Radiant, who like many Indonesians has one name, told a press conference. The officers found 1.4 kilogrammes (3.1 pounds) of cocaine inside a sex toy hidden in her genitals and in her underwear. Police also accused her of smuggling dozens of ecstasy pills. The Peruvian woman told the police she was hired to transport the drugs to Indonesia by a man she met on the dark web in April in return for $20,000, said Radiant. The woman has been charged under Indonesia's harsh narcotics law and could face the death penalty if found guilty. Last month, a Bali court sentenced a 46-year-old Argentine to seven years in prison after she was found guilty of smuggling 244 grams of cocaine wrapped with a condom that she hid inside her genitals. Indonesia has some of the world's toughest drug laws. There are dozens of traffickers on death row in the country, including a cocaine-smuggling British grandmother. Indonesia last carried out executions in 2016, killing one Indonesian and three Nigerian drug convicts by firing squad. - AFP
