FII selling crosses Rs 50,000 crore in IT stocks in 2025. Is tech dead money or just misunderstood?
IT stocks
so far in 2025. Out of Rs 95,600 crore that foreign investors have withdrawn from Indian markets through July, more than half has come from just one corner which was once the darling of global investors.
The selling momentum accelerated dramatically last month, with FIIs offloading nearly Rs 20,000 crore worth of IT stocks as disappointing Q1
earnings
and widespread layoff announcements shattered any hopes of a near-term recovery.

IT bellwether
Tata Consultancy Services
(TCS), which announced layoffs of 12,000 employees, representing 2% of its workforce, has been the worst hit in the rout. The stock's performance in 2025 marks its worst phase since the 2008 global financial crisis.
Peers
Infosys
has plummeted 29% from its peak,
HCL Technologies
has shed 27%, while
Wipro
and
LTIMindtree
have both declined 26%. Midcap IT stocks are no better, with OFSS down 36%,
Persistent Systems
falling 25%, and
Coforge
retreating 20% from their 52-week highs.
"Revenue performance was weak in the quarter, with four of the five large IT companies reporting revenue decline quarter-on-quarter and three of the five on a year-on-year basis,"
analysts
at Kotak Securities pointed out, highlighting the broad-based nature of the sector's troubles.
Live Events
Companies have cited various factors for the weak demand environment, including tariff impacts and subdued discretionary spending across multiple verticals—painting a picture of global clients tightening their technology budgets.
"Weak demand has led to underwhelming results across the IT sector. This softness has manifested in multiple ways—margin pressure, increased reliance on balance sheets to drive growth, and heightened aggression in cost take-out deals," said Kawaljeet Saluja of Kotak Equities.
Despite companies implementing wage deferrals and aggressive cost optimization measures, margins have remained under relentless pressure. EBIT margins declined year-on-year for the top three players, with profitability pressures visible across the board.
"While companies have managed to protect margins during weak demand phases through efficiency measures, wage deferrals, and cost controls, the levers appear largely exhausted after nearly three years of subdued demand," Saluja noted, warning that large cost take-out deals are inherently margin-dilutive.

Layoffs fuel AI fears
The sector's woes deepened with news of employee retrenchments adding fuel to the fire. Beyond TCS's 12,000 job cuts, HCL Technologies announced it is adjusting talent deployment outside India, sparking debates about generative AI beginning to impact the workforce.
However,
BNP Paribas
's Kumar Rakesh sees these retrenchments differently: "We see these retrenchments as a sign of demand supply mismatch and margin pressure. Notably, this is happening at a time when, for most IT Services firms, attrition is rising, utilisation rates are close to their peak, and hiring, especially of freshers, continues."
Mixed earnings scorecard
Out of 15 Indian IT services companies analyzed by BNP Paribas, 53% beat consensus revenue growth estimates, an improvement from just 20% last quarter. However, 60% missed on margin expectations, with some flagging incremental margin pressure ahead.
"While no company's results were a clear positive surprise, TCS' results were the weakest in this earnings season," said Kumar Rakesh of BNP Paribas.
The brutal correction has at least made valuations more palatable. Following the sell-off, valuations are now undemanding with free cash flow yields of over 4.5% and payout yields of approximately 4%.
This has caught the attention of some analysts. Global brokerage Jefferies upgraded the IT sector to neutral from underweight earlier this week, citing attractive valuations relative to the Nifty.
"While we remain concerned on long-term stock performance for IT companies given single-digit EPS growth outlook, we believe conditions are ripe for a near-term tactical bounce," Jefferies said while adding Infosys to its model portfolio.
Should you buy the dip?
Some market veterans are beginning to see opportunity in the wreckage. Jimeet Modi of Samco Group expects decent revenue growth ahead, arguing that India's IT firms benefit from lower operating costs and a large, skilled workforce.
"These structural advantages should support a gradual recovery in H2 2025, making current levels a selective entry point for long-term investors in top-quality IT names," he said.
However, analysts caution that a major re-rating for the sector hinges on the emergence of a new technology cycle and meaningful earnings upgrades.

Brokerage Picks
Among the carnage, brokerages are making selective bets:
Kotak prefers Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Coforge, and Hexaware
Motilal Oswal continues to prioritize HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra in large-cap, and Coforge in mid-tier categories
Jefferies' India model portfolio includes Infosys, Coforge and Sagility India
BNP Paribas maintains buy calls on HCL Technologies, Infosys, Persistent Systems and TCS
As the sector grapples with one of its deepest crises in the last few years, the question remains whether this bloodbath represents a capitulation bottom or merely the beginning of a longer winter for India's once-unstoppable technology sector.

Trump Tariff Effect: Instagram User Shows Sharp Spike In Walmart Pricing
An Instagram user, Mercedes Chandler, recently shared a video from a Walmart store in the United States asserting how US President Donald Trump's tariffs are directly causing a sharp spike in prices across clothes and other items. The post captioned, "Donald Trump's tariffs are in full swing!" shows Chandler walking across clothing sections comparing old price tags with new ones. The older tags had been either removed or covered up and new higher prices added. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mercedes Chandler (@campcallout) "Guys, the tariffs are in active effect," Chandler says, adding, "Look at these clothes in Walmart. All the tags have these bottom pieces ripped off, but then you find one with the bottom still on - $10.98. The price is raised to $11.98." Showing a children's outfit originally priced at $6.98, hiked up to $10.98, and a backpack originally sold for $19.97 now priced at $24.97, Chandler points out "That's a $4 increase". "If you don't believe me, go to your local, whether it be Walmart or Target and check this out for yourself," they said in the video. Users on Instagram have reacted to the video in different ways. Some were confused, a few criticised the tariffs and others responded sarcastically. "Was it worth it? Are we great yet?", one user commented, taking a slight at Trump's MAGA philosophy. Another said, "Remember when Trump freaked out when Amazon put the tariff charges when you check out? Retail stores should put that in their receipt." A Target employee commented, "...We also are taking the perforated price tags off the clothing starting a few days ago". Another user, supporting the tariffs said, "Wow we get billions and billions from the tariffs and in return we have to pay an extra dollar for a shirt OH NOOOOO the world is coming to an end". Since Trump assumed office in January, he has threatened to impose the main cornerstone of his campaign - tariffs on other countries. He has repeatedly argued that tariffs boost American manufacturing and protect jobs. Now, companies that bring in foreign goods into the US have to pay tax to the government. In return, American buyers will have to pay more for the imports. On Wednesday, Trump escalated his tariff offensive against India by slapping an additional 25 percent duty and subsequently doubling it to 50 percent on Indian goods over New Delhi's continuous imports of Russian oil.

Power consumer complaints remain unheeded as linemen and helpers strike work
Jaipur: At least 2,000 employees of the contractors appointed by the discoms for fault rectification have been on strike for the past three days, causing difficulties for electricity consumers as their complaints for restoring power connections remain unattended. The employees of contractors, Sandha & Company and Vision Plus, said they are demanding a salary hike, which is currently meagre. While the linemen are getting a little over Rs 9,000 a month, the helpers receive Rs 6,600, according to the employees. In fact, their salary was reduced after the new contractors took over the work in 2002. Now, they are demanding hikes up to Rs 21,000 for linemen and Rs 18,000 for helpers. "With this meagre amount, we cannot run our families. We will not resume work until our demands are met," said one of the employees. TOI tried to contact the management of the two companies, but calls and text messages remained unanswered. The employees said that the state govt raised the minimum wage by Rs 27 in 2022, but they did not get the benefits. Sources said in the absence of regular employees, the company has hired temporary workers to manage the maintenance and address consumer complaints, but the temporary measure is not enough. NGT fines GMC Rs 17.4L for dumping waste in open
Ghaziabad: The National Green Tribunal has directed GMC to pay an environmental compensation of Rs 17.4 lakh for continuing to dump waste in the open. The action follows a complaint filed in July 2024 by a Loni resident, alleging that the corporation was dumping municipal solid waste (MSW) in an open area, causing pollution. The complaint said that during the monsoon, in the absence of a leachate collection tank, leachate was seeping into groundwater and spilling onto roads, mixing with storm drains. NGT's three-member bench, comprising Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Sudhir Agarwal, and Expert Member A. Senthil Vel, admitted the petition on July 31, 2024, and issued a notice to GMC to take remedial measures and submit a compliance report. However, delays sometimes occurred due to public protests, rain, or other reasons. The corporation also claimed that garbage from Delhi was being dumped illegally at the location, aggravating the problem. The NGT then directed the UP Pollution Control Board to carry out a site inspection, which in its report said, "The total area of the site in question measures 1600 sqm, with about 40 metric tonnes (MT) of MSW lying there at the time of inspection. The site was in an unhygienic condition, emitting a foul odour, with waste scattered in surrounding areas due to the absence of a boundary wall." Based on the findings, the NGT, on July 30 this year, ordered GMC to pay Rs 17.45 lakh for violating the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
