Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made it clear on several occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of the southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at appropriate time.
A spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said this on Thursday, a day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed concern over the Census-linked delimitation exercise.
'The Honourable Home Minister has made it clear on several occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at appropriate time," the spokesperson said.
The Census was supposed to be conducted in 2021 and all the preparations for the exercise were completed but it was postponed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The spokesperson said the aftershock of COVID-19 continued for quite some time and it caused disruptions in all sectors, including education.
Around 30 lakh enumerators are required for conducting the Census. Enumerators, who are primary school teachers, are key persons for conducting the exercise.

'Countries which conducted Census immediately after COVID-19 faced issues on quality and coverage of Census data," the spokesperson said.
The government has decided to commence the process of the Census forthwith and it will complete on March 1, 2027, the reference date for the Census.
The spokesperson also said that budget has never been a constraint for conducting the Census as allocation of funds is always ensured by the government.
India's 16th Census with caste enumeration will be carried out in 2027 with the reference date of October 1, 2026, in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and of March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country.
It has been decided to conduct the Population Census-2027 in two phases, along with the enumeration of castes, the MHA announced on Wednesday.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin wrote on X that the Indian Constitution mandates that delimitation must follow the first Census after 2026 and the BJP has now 'delayed" the Census to 2027, 'making their plan clear to reduce" Tamil Nadu's parliamentary representation.
'I had warned about this. It is now unfolding. the BJP, Palaniswami is not just silent but complicit in this betrayal. It's now clear that he has surrendered to Delhi's domination.
'The people of Tamil Nadu are united as one in their demand for a Fair Delimitation. We need clear answers from the Union Government," Stalin said.

The two nuns and a co-accused were arrested for alleged human trafficking and forced conversion and were released from Durg Central Jail in Chhattisgarh on August 1 after a court granted them bail, saying the case was based on 'mere suspicion.' The Catholic nuns, Preethy Mary and Vandana Francis, were welcomed outside the jail by several leaders from Kerala, including LDF MPs. The KSU leader further charged that Gopi was unreachable even when authorities sought his presence for inaugurating a major central government project implemented under the Thrissur Corporation. 'The union minister was inaccessible not just to ordinary people of the constituency, even those in responsible positions in the state could not reach him,' the KSU leader alleged. Gokul said he sent the missing complaint to the East Police via email on Sunday morning and plans to submit a hard copy at the police station on Monday. Metro trial run in Thane likely in September and operations by December: Shinde
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said efforts were underway to conduct the trial run of the much-awaited Metro service in Thane next month, and its full-fledged operations are likely to begin by December this year. India News Once the project is completed, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) would enjoy seamless Metro connectivity, with last-mile and end-to-end commute solutions, Shinde told reporters after inaugurating the Thane Varsha Marathon. "Efforts are on to conduct the trial run of the Metro in Thane in September. After that, we are working on launching the actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war-footing," he said. He also said the preliminary work on Thane's internal Metro network has begun. "This will be linked to the main Metro lines to provide integrated transport facilities," he added. Referring to broader infrastructure plans, the deputy CM said the freeway extension from Mumbai to Thane would ease traffic congestion and divert services to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) away from the city. Mandate has been given to the collector, municipal chief and police commissioner to make Thane traffic congestion-free, he said. "They are working towards it, and soon Thane city will be free from traffic jams," Shinde asserted. Highlighting the recent development works in Thane, Shinde mentioned the rejuvenation of Jogila Lake, which had been encroached upon by nearly 250 huts. "We have relocated the people who encroached the area and freed the lake. This is perhaps the first such project in the country where a lake has been completely restored and encroachments removed," he said. He also praised the patriotism of wrestler-turned-politician and Shiv Sena leader Chandrahar Patil as well as his team from Kolhapur, who have gone to the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir to donate blood for soldiers. The marathon was spread across 12 categories, including a 'Corporate Run' for municipal officers, employees, public representatives, and journalists; special races for senior citizens above 60; and a spirited participation by the Divyang Tridal group. The total prize pool was ₹10,38,900 was awarded.

India's Operation Sindoor India launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 7 when the military hit nine terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), killing more than 100 terrorists. It was New Delhi's direct military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike that killed 26 people. The operation triggered four days of strikes and counterstrikes with drones, missiles and long-range weapons before the two sides reached an understanding on stopping all military action on May 10.
