Metro trial run in Thane likely in September and operations by December: Shinde
Once the project is completed, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) would enjoy seamless Metro connectivity, with last-mile and end-to-end commute solutions, Shinde told reporters after inaugurating the Thane Varsha Marathon.
"Efforts are on to conduct the trial run of the Metro in Thane in September. After that, we are working on launching the actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war-footing," he said. He also said the preliminary work on Thane's internal Metro network has begun.
"This will be linked to the main Metro lines to provide integrated transport facilities," he added.
Referring to broader infrastructure plans, the deputy CM said the freeway extension from Mumbai to Thane would ease traffic congestion and divert services to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) away from the city.
Mandate has been given to the collector, municipal chief and police commissioner to make Thane traffic congestion-free, he said. "They are working towards it, and soon Thane city will be free from traffic jams," Shinde asserted.
Highlighting the recent development works in Thane, Shinde mentioned the rejuvenation of Jogila Lake, which had been encroached upon by nearly 250 huts. "We have relocated the people who encroached the area and freed the lake. This is perhaps the first such project in the country where a lake has been completely restored and encroachments removed," he said.
He also praised the patriotism of wrestler-turned-politician and Shiv Sena leader Chandrahar Patil as well as his team from Kolhapur, who have gone to the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir to donate blood for soldiers. "Their effort reflects true love for the nation," he remarked On the Thane Varsha Marathon, organised by the Thane Municipal Corporation in collaboration with several sports organisations after a long gap, Shinde said more than 25,000 participants joined the run, underscoring the city's enthusiasm for community events.
Dharmendra of Pune ASI won the men's segment completing the 21-kilometre run in 01:07:41, while Ravina Gaikwad of Nashik triumphed in the women's section covering the same distance in 01:25:46. Both received ₹1 lakh along with mementos, medals, and certificates.
The event, with the slogan 'Marathon Thanechi, Urja Tarunaichi', returned after a five-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The marathon was spread across 12 categories, including a 'Corporate Run' for municipal officers, employees, public representatives, and journalists; special races for senior citizens above 60; and a spirited participation by the Divyang Tridal group. The total prize pool was ₹10,38,900 was awarded.

Sarpanch to be honoured on I-Day for transforming village
Bhilwara: Divyansh Bhardwaj, the young sarpanch of Awan Panchayat in Tonk district, will be honoured at the 2025 Independence Day ceremony in New Delhi. He is among 14 sarpanchs from Rajasthan who have been invited as special guests, along with their spouses, to the ceremony at Delhi's Red Fort. After completing an MBA in Switzerland, Bhardwaj transformed Awan panchayat, which now features air-conditioned and internet-equipped libraries for students, a heritage-style crematorium and cemetery, a heritage-look panchayat house, an attractive banquet hall-equipped marriage garden, Bheem Park, a women's ghat with dressing rooms at Rajkaleshwar Tirth, and a heritage cultural building—amenities rare in Indian villages. Bhardwaj introduced innovations such as providing air travel to meritorious students annually, appointing a woman as sarpanch on Women's Day each year, and implementing door-to-door garbage collection. During the Covid pandemic, he remained committed to public service. At the Independence Day ceremony in New Delhi, Bhardwaj and the other sarpanchs from Rajasthan will be seated in a designated area and may have the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Debt alarm: US national debt hits record $37 trillion, pace doubles with trillion added every five months
AI image The US government's gross national debt has crossed $37 trillion, setting a new record that underscores the growing strain on the country's finances and adding to the cost pressures facing taxpayers, according to the latest Treasury Department report issued Tuesday. The milestone has arrived years earlier than pre-pandemic forecasts. In January 2020, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected that gross federal debt would exceed $37 trillion only after fiscal year 2030. But the figure accelerated as the multi-year Covid-19 pandemic, starting in 2020, shut down much of the US economy, prompting heavy federal borrowing under then-President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden to stabilise the economy and support recovery. More recently, debt levels have been driven higher by additional government spending following Trump's signing into law of Republicans' tax cut and spending package earlier this year. CBO estimates that the law will add $4.1 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Michael Peterson, chair and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, said in a statement that government borrowing pushes interest rates upward, 'adding costs for everyone and reducing private sector investment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pabuaran: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo Within the federal budget, the debt crowds out important priorities and creates a damaging cycle of more borrowing, more interest costs, and even more borrowing.' Wendy Edelberg, a senior fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution, noted that Congress plays a decisive role in shaping spending and revenue policies. She said the impact of the Republicans' tax law 'means that we're going to borrow a lot over the course of 2026, we're going to borrow a lot over the course of 2027, and it's just going to keep going.' The Government Accountability Office has outlined several ways rising national debt affects Americans, including higher borrowing costs for mortgages and cars, lower wages as businesses invest less, and more expensive goods and services. Peterson highlighted how debt milestones are 'piling up at a rapid rate.' The US reached $34 trillion in January 2024, $35 trillion in July 2024, and $36 trillion in November 2024. 'We are now adding a trillion more to the national debt every five months,' he said, noting this is more than twice as fast as the average pace over the last 25 years. According to the Joint Economic Committee, at the current average daily growth rate, another trillion dollars will be added to the debt in about 173 days. Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said in a statement, 'hopefully this milestone is enough to wake up policymakers to the reality that we need to do something, and we need to do it quickly.'
