Global gold demand rises 3% in Q2 2025, driven by strong investment flows: WGC

New Delhi: The gold demand in Q2 2025 witnessed a rise of 3 per cent to reach 1,249t, amid a high price environment, as revealed in a recent report by the World Gold Council.
The report added that the strong gold investment flows boosted quarterly growth, as an increasingly unpredictable geopolitical environment and price momentum sustained demand.
"Global markets have navigated a volatile start to the year marked by trade tensions, unpredictable US policy shifts and frequent geopolitical flashpoints," said Louise Street, Senior Markets Analyst at the World Gold Council.
"Gold recorded a remarkable 26% appreciation in the first half of the year in dollar terms, outperforming many major asset classes. With such an impressive start to the year, it is possible that gold could trade within a relatively narrow range in the latter half of 2025," Street added.
Gold ETF demand also acted as a key demand driver as it experienced an inflow of 170t over the quarter, compared with small outflows in Q2 2024. Particularly, Asian-listed funds were major contributors at 70t, keeping pace with US flows.
Gold ETF also reached its highest first-half total since 2020, with record inflows in Q1, global gold ETF demand reached 397t.
The report by WGC also said that the total bar and coin investment increased by 11 per cent year-on-year, adding 307t, with Chinese investors leading the way with a notable 44 per cent year-on-year increase to 115t, while Indian investors continued to add to their holdings, totalling 46t in Q2.
On the flip side, divergent trends were witnessed in Western markets as European net investment more than doubled to 28t while US bar and coin demand halved to 9t in the second quarter.
Jewellery demand continued to decline, with the volume of consumption down 14 per cent and nearing low levels last seen in 2020 during the COVID pandemic.

Global economy in major problem if Russian oil exports disrupt, India's impact limited to $5bn annually: Report

New Delhi: If Russian oil exports were to be disrupted, it could create a major problem for the global economy, however, for India, the impact is expected to be limited, according to a report by Bank of Baroda. The report stated that according to estimates, the effect on India's oil import bill would be around USD 5 billion annually, an amount considered manageable given the country's overall trade size. It stated, "For the world economy there could be a greater problem if there is a full embargo on Russian oil exports". The report mentioned that India's crude oil sourcing pattern has changed significantly in recent years. Before the Ukraine war in 2021-22, Russia's share in India's crude oil imports was modest. By 2024-25, however, Russia emerged as the largest supplier, followed by Iraq with a 19 per cent share, Saudi Arabia with 14 per cent, and the UAE with nearly 10 per cent. Together, these four countries accounted for almost 80 per cent of India's oil imports in 2024-25. The United States' share, which had been high in the past, fluctuated and stood at a lower level in recent years. In terms of prices, there is considerable variation among suppliers due to factors such as logistics, quality, and purchase timing. In 2024-25, Iraq offered the lowest average price at USD 76.83 per barrel, followed closely by Russia at USD 78.39 per barrel, about USD 1.56 lower than India's overall average price. The June 2025 data showed the average import price for India at around USD 69 per barrel, with Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Nigeria, and Brazil offering prices below USD 70 per barrel. Interestingly, Russian oil was not the cheapest that month, as Kuwait and Iraq sold at lower rates. India imported around 244 million tonnes of crude oil in 2024-25, roughly 1.8 billion barrels. Every USD 1 increase in oil prices translates to about USD 1.8 billion in additional import costs. Given that June's average price was only USD 2.50 above Russian levels, the report highlighted that the potential impact would be absorbable. It stated, "The overall impact hence would not be more than USD 4.5-5 bn on an annual basis. Given that overall imports of goods were USD 720 bn, this would not be a significant increase which cannot be absorbed". Globally, the stakes are higher. Russia accounts for about 10 per cent of global oil supply, and a complete embargo could push prices above USD 80 per barrel in the short term which as per report will strain economies worldwide until alternative supplies are arranged.

RBI allows investment of surplus rupee balances in special vostro accounts into Govt Securities

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has permitted persons resident outside India holding Special Rupee Vostro Accounts (SRVAs) to invest their surplus rupee balances in central government securities, including treasury bills. The RBI has also updated its Master Direction on Non-resident Investment in Debt Instruments to incorporate the operational guidelines for this measure. SRVAs are special accounts maintained by foreign banks with Indian banks to facilitate the settlement of international trade transactions in Indian rupees, as part of India's push to promote the rupee as an international trade settlement currency. The mechanism was first introduced in July 2022, allowing trade settlements in INR with partner countries. According to the RBI's latest guidelines, foreign entities holding such accounts will now be able to channel their unused rupee funds from trade settlements into investments in central government securities, including short-term instruments such as treasury bills. The RBI stated, "Persons resident outside India that maintain a Special Rupee Vostro Account (SRVA) for international trade settlement in Indian Rupees in terms of A.P. (DIR Series) Circular No. 10 dated July 11, 2022 may invest their rupee surplus balance in the aforesaid account in Central Government Securities." The directions, issued under sections 10(4) and 11(1) of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999, have come into immediate effect. Authorised Dealer Category-I (AD Cat-I) banks have been asked to inform their constituents and concerned customers about the new provisions. Given the sovereign guarantee, central government securities are considered as one of the safest investment options in India. With this move, non-resident holders of SRVAs will have the flexibility to invest surplus trade settlement funds in risk-free instruments, earning good returns along with supporting India's government borrowing programme. The updated Master Direction, Reserve Bank of India (Non-resident Investment in Debt Instruments) Directions, 2025, issued on January 7, 2025, has been revised to incorporate these new guidelines.
