Kolkata gangrape: Day after crime, accused Monojit Mishra contacted ‘influential mentors' for help, was told to back off
The new revelation comes as Kolkata Police continues its probe into the June 25 gangrape of a 24-year-old inside the law college's campus. Four people associated with the college — prime accused Monojit Mishra, students Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20), and 55-year-old security guard Pinaki Banerjee — are currently in police custody.
According to investigators, soon after the alleged gangrape, Monojit moved across multiple areas in South Kolkata, including Rashbehari, Deshapriya Park, Gariahat, Fern Road, and Ballygunge Station Road, looking for someone to help him.
Mobile phone tower data also showed that he went near the Karaya police station during this time.
Monojit contacted 'influential' person
Police said Monojit contacted an 'influential' person in Deshapriya Park on June 26, the day after the incident, hoping for assistance. However, the person refused to get involved and advised Monojit to 'back off' after assessing the seriousness of the situation.
'Monojit went to various parts of the city including Rashbehari, Deshapriya Park, Gariahat, Fern Road, and Ballygunge Station Road, trying to meet his mentors. Mobile tower data also indicated that he visited someone near Karaya police station,' news agency PTI quoted an investigating officer as saying.

The officer also said Monojit and his co-accused — Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed — had planned the crime well in advance. Call Detail Records (CDR) accessed by cops showed that the trio was in frequent contact in the days leading up to June 25.
On the night of the incident, the three men allegedly raped the student inside the security guard's room on the college premises, while the guard was ordered to stay outside. After the assault, they remained there and drank alcohol.

'The three consumed alcohol in the guard's room and then asked security guard Pinaki Banerjee to keep his mouth shut about the incident,' the officer added.
Later that night, the trio went to a dhaba on EM Bypass for dinner before returning home the next morning.

Kerala CM rejects corruption claims at Digital University, defends transparency
Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 21 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday strongly denied allegations of corruption at the state-run Digital University, calling the claims made by Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan 'factually incorrect" and 'misleading". Satheesan, in a letter sent to the Chief Minister on July 12, had called for a vigilance probe into what he described as financial fraud, misuse of power, and illegal project handling at the prestigious university. The leader of Congress-led UDF also alleged that shell companies formed by faculty members were being used to divert university projects and funds. The Digital University operates under the state's IT department, with the Chief Minister himself serving as its Pro-Chancellor — a fact Satheesan highlighted while calling for accountability. He also claimed that the lack of auditing since the university's inception had opened the door to corruption. Responding in writing, Vijayan dismissed the allegations, stating that a statutory audit has been completed up to the 2023–24 financial year and that the university has formally requested the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) to carry out further audits. The next steps are now pending with the CAG, he said. Refuting claims that advance payments were made illegally to the I-GEIC organisation, the CM called the accusation 'baseless." He questioned the logic behind labelling it a 'fraudulent organisation" and pointed out that the company's board includes respected names such as Madhavan Nambiar, a former Civil Aviation Secretary to the Government of India, and others with links to Tata Steel and leading academic institutions. Vijayan defended the university's practice of encouraging faculty-led innovation and entrepreneurship, stating that its regulations allow faculty members to form non-profit entities for research and development. He added that such project-based activities are also a means of securing salaries and operational funds, as part of a modern, self-sustaining university model. The CM concluded by suggesting that portraying these approved projects as corruption was a deliberate attempt to discredit the university and mislead the public. Patna hospital murder suspect held in Kolkata: How Bihar-Bengal criminal nexus is ‘deepening'
The arrest of a 26-year-old man from Kolkata in connection with a recent hospital murder in Patna has once again raised questions over whether West Bengal is becoming a safe haven for criminals from neighbouring states, especially Bihar. While police officials emphasise the need for stronger inter-state coordination, Opposition leaders and former police officers have flagged what they describe as an emerging pattern of cross-border crime — with criminals finding shelter and operational ease across 'porous boundaries'. On Sunday, the Kolkata Police's Special Task Force (STF) arrested 26-year-old Tauseef from a guesthouse in the city. He is accused in the murder of Chandan Mishra, a 36-year-old murder convict who was out on parole and was gunned down inside a Patna hospital earlier this month, allegedly due to gang rivalry. The Kolkata Police said that Bihar police were initiating legal action to take custody of the accused, three of whom were also arrested. A retired senior police official notes that the cross-border movement of criminals poses considerable challenges for law enforcement. 'This incident is not isolated, but rather indicative of a worrying trend where individuals involved in criminal activities in one state are increasingly found operating, or seeking refuge, in the other,' the official said. CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty, however, alleged that the state government is complicit. 'Criminals are considering Bengal and Kolkata safe havens. Can that happen without the help of those who manage the local police? Criminals feel someone here can 'manage' things for them,' he said. In response, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh dismissed the charge, saying that cross-border criminal movement is not unique to Bengal. 'There have been incidents where crimes occurred here but the criminals were traced to other states. We've even seen dacoity camps operating in neighbouring states, from where criminals were sent to Bengal,' he said. Ghosh cited an alleged instance from Asansol: 'After a dacoity in Asansol, it was found that the culprits had been trained in a neighbouring state. They were supplied arms there and sent here to commit the crime. At the time, we did not say that the state was a haven for criminals.' He also mentioned arrests of alleged Rohingya infiltrators in Agartala. 'Some were heading to Delhi, others were planning to catch a train to Bengal. It is our intelligence network that helped arrest many of them from neighbouring states.' In 2024, Bihar gangster Pappu Chowdhury's name cropped up in the attempted murder of TMC councillor Sushanta Ghosh. Chowdhury and fellow Bihar gangster Subodh Singh have been linked by police to a number of high-profile crimes in Bengal — including the 2019 murder of BJP leader Manish Shukla and the 2023 killing of Durgapur businessman Raju Jha. Singh's name has figured in several cases across multiple Bengal districts. In 2024, four suspects arrested in connection with jewellery shop heists in the state's Nadia and Purulia were allegedly found to be part of a Bihar-based gang. Police sources estimate around 50 criminal gangs operate in the border areas of Bihar — with links extending into Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and even Nepal. According to them, joint operations by the Kolkata Police STF and Bihar STF over the past three years have resulted in at least 58 arrests and the seizure of over 115 firearms, many of them allegedly sourced from illegal arms factories in Bihar. The arms trade between the two states remains a growing concern. A joint raid in Bihar's Munger last year uncovered an arms assembly unit where gun parts and equipment were seized. Similar crackdowns in Kolkata and parts of Jharkhand have led to the recovery of illegal firearms and cartridges. 'The porous nature of the Bengal-Bihar border, and the ease with which criminals move between jurisdictions, makes things difficult,' said a former police official. 'We need far more rigorous inter-state coordination than we currently have.' Another senior retired police official expressed worry. 'Not developing intel and not taking proactive measures is our failure. What is happening in Bihar is not our lookout, but if time and again, criminals are found to be escaping to Kolkata to evade arrest, that brings a bad name… It is definitely worrying.' 7/11 Mumbai train blasts: Details of 12 accused acquitted by HC
Mumbai, Jul 21 (PTI) Twelve persons, arrested in 2006 for their involvement in the July 11, 2006 serial train blasts case, were acquitted by the Bombay High Court on Monday. The prosecution had claimed the accused were members of the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Following is a list of the accused who were convicted and on death row: 1) Kamal Ahmed Ansari: Died in 2021 pending hearing of the appeal at the age of 50. Ansari was a resident of Madhubani district in Bihar and was accused of receiving arms training in Pakistan. He was also accused of planting the bomb that exploded at Matunga. 2) Mohammed Faisal Rahman Shaikh: The 50-year-old accused from Mira Road in neighbouring Thane district was accused of being one of the main conspirators. As per prosecution, he had obtained money from Pakistan, assembled bombs and planted one of them in a train. 3) Ehtesham Siddiqui: Aged 42, Siddiqui was accused of carrying out a recce of the trains and planting the bomb that went off at Mira-Bhayandar. 4) Naveed Hussain Khan Rasheed: Aged 44, Rasheed, a call centre employee at the time, was accused of assembling bombs and planting one that exploded in a train at Bandra. He was a resident of Secunderabad and was arrested from there. 5) Asif Khan Bashir Khan: The 52-year-old was accused of helping assemble the bombs and planting one that exploded at Borivali. A civil engineer, Khan was a resident of Jalgaon and accused to be a key member of SIMI. 2) Mohammed Shafi: Aged 46, Shafi was accused of running a hawala racket and procuring money from Pakistan for the blasts. 3) Shaikh Mohammed Ali Alam: The 55-year-old was charged with assembling bombs at his house in suburban Govandi with the help of Pakistanis who had sneaked into India. He was also accused of being a member of SIMI. 4) Mohammed Sajid Ansari: The 47-year-old resident of Mira Road was accused of procuring timers for the bombs and helping assemble them. He was also accused of harbouring two Pakistani nationals. 5) Muzammil Rahman Shaikh: The 40-year-old youngest accused in the case, a software engineer, was accused of getting trained in Pakistan and also conducting recce of the local trains. His brothers — Faisal and Raahil — are also accused in the case but were never caught. They were allegedly the main planners of the conspiracy. 6) Suhail Mehmood Shaikh: Aged 55, Shaikh was accused of having taken arms training in Pakistan and also carrying out a recce of the trains to be targeted. 7) Zameer Rehman Shaikh: The 50-year-old was accused of attending conspiracy meetings and also receiving training in Pakistan.
