Govt acts to bridge gap between graduates and job market
KLANG: To overcome the imbalance between the number of high-value jobs offered in the labour market and the number of graduates from higher learning institutions as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the government has launched several policies to address the matter, according to Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.
The minister said among the policies in question were the MADANI Economic Framework and progressive salary policy which were among the efforts made by the government across ministries to ensure that every graduate and worker received a dignified remuneration.
'We have about 300,000 university graduates yearly, plus 100,000 TVET graduates, making a total of 400,000 Malaysians with higher education qualifications, but every year we are only able to generate 50,000 high-value and highly skilled jobs,' he said.
He said this when met after the 2025 Trade Union Affairs Programme (PHEKS) Central Zone assistance handover ceremony here today.
Sim also encouraged workers to join trade unions so that suitable salaries or remuneration could be negotiated well with employers.
Yesterday, the media reported that more than 65 per cent of degree holders in the country earn a monthly salary of below RM3,000, thus earning an 'enough to eat' income with no room to save, invest or increase their social mobility.
In addition, more than 70 per cent of graduates in the country were found to be forced to work in the semi-skilled and unskilled sectors.
The findings were obtained through a study The 'Gaji Cukup Makan' Economy: When Higher Education Becomes an Economic Risk, conducted under the Malaysia Labour Market Insight Series.

He said he had raised the matter with chief minister Chow Kon Yeow recently, after the proposed discount drew criticism. Sim, who is also human resources minister, said Chow had agreed to bring the matter back to the state executive council to be discussed and reviewed. 'I take note of the public feedback on the matter. As a party that upholds the Federal Constitution, DAP always fights for justice and the welfare of all Malaysians, regardless of race and religion. 'It is important that the Penang government continues to uphold the principle of social justice and ensures that every Malaysian's right to homeownership is protected,' he said in a statement. The discount was announced on Thursday, by executive councillor for housing, S Sundarajoo. He said private developers will be encouraged to voluntarily offer a 5% discount to first-time Indian Muslim homebuyers for one year as part of a state housing campaign. The initiative was criticised by human rights lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, who called the campaign discriminatory and unconstitutional. However, Sundarajoo defended the discount, saying it does not infringe on the rights of other communities and was purely aimed at increasing homeownership among groups with low participation in the open market. He also said developers would offer the discount as a form of corporate social responsibility and would not involve the state government's funds.

Madani slammed for EV perks to rich, burden on poor
THE Madani government's push for electric vehicles (EVs) was initially praised, as EVs are seen as better for the environment than fuel-powered cars. However, the high prices of EVs have made them unaffordable for most Malaysians — especially since almost 35% of formal workers earn less than RM2,000 a month. Under current policies, EVs are exempt from import and excise duties until the end of this year. This has triggered criticism on social media. Some users on X pointed out that while EV buyers — often the wealthy — get to enjoy tax-free benefits, regular Malaysians who buy fuel-run cars must still pay high taxes. One user said that someone buying a locally made car like the Proton Saga would still pay around RM15,000 in excise and sales taxes. Many Malaysians need a car just to go to work, especially in a car-dependent country like Malaysia. Meanwhile, luxury EVs like the Porsche Taycan — which costs RM675,000 — are completely tax-free. When a low-income M'sian buys a Proton Saga, he pays RM15,375 in excise & sales tax. But when a rich man buys an EV Porsche Taycan, he pays zero — saving over RM600,000. Tesla Model 3 saves RM225k. Singapore's Nicholas Sim is crowned the first-ever Mr Nusantara, an inspiring winner at the age of 48 who overcame many adversities
KUALA LUMPUR: The highly anticipated MR NUSANTARA pageant 2025 reached a spectacular conclusion on 29th May 2025 at the prestigious Galaxy Banquet Hall @ HGH Convention Centre, while celebrating the rich cultural heritage and modern elegance of the Nusantara region. The coveted title of MR NUSANTARA 2025 was awarded to Mr Singapore Nusantara 2025 winner Nicholas Erekose Sim who impressed the judges with his charisma, confidence, and dedication to promoting cultural unity and social impact. At 48, Sim was also one of the oldest winner seen in a full pledged male pageant show. On top of that, he was indeed an inspiring winner. For his efforts in being crowned Mr Nusantara he walked home with a prize package in total of US$80,000 (RM340,000) in cash and prizes which included a brand-new car. Completing the winner's court were Jervie Lo @ Leon, a 43 year old jeweller from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, who was sashed as Mr Malaysia Nusantara 2025 and Candra Hakiki, a 31-year-old model from from Jakarta, Indonesia who was adjudged as Mr Indonesia Nusantara 2025. Both national winners demonstrated remarkable poise and passion throughout the competition. On the very same stage, Mr Malaysia Nusantara 2025, Jervie Lo, was also sashed as Mister Supranational Malaysia 2025. He will be representing Malaysia at the ninth edition of Mister Supranational which will be held on 28th June, 2025, in Poland.
