Ballito resident held at gunpoint in house burglary
According to Umhlali Saps, three unidentified men, one reportedly armed with a pistol, entered the property around 3am.
The robbers allegedly gained access through a sliding door that had been left open, surprising the homeowner who was working on his computer in the lounge at the time.
The armed thief reportedly pointed the firearm at the homeowner and forced him to lie on the floor while the other two thieves ransacked the home.
Numerous high value items were allegedly stolen.
In a possible lead for investigators, a power bank believed to belong to one of the robbers was left behind at the scene. The item has been retained by police for fingerprint analysis.
No injuries or property damage were reported and no shots were fired. Emergency services and police responded promptly.
This incident follows a similar non-violent break-in on Marion Road North on Saturday, June 15, between 8 and 9pm.
In that case, a thief entered through a side sliding door while the homeowners were on the patio, stealing a wallet and a laptop without being noticed.
CCTV footage from the Marion Road incident revealed a robber wearing Adidas shoes similar to those seen in previous cases. However, police noted a different modus operandi in the two incidents.
Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW) chair Morné Steffens confirmed a recent rise in burglaries and attempted break-ins in the area.
'We are very fortunate here with crime usually at a minimum. It's been blissfully quiet, until now,' said Steffens.
He urged residents to remain vigilant, secure all entry points and report suspicious activity immediately.

Four South Africans arrested over Home Affairs fire
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the fire that destroyed the Germiston Home Affairs office. The incident happened on Tuesday during a protest by Pharoe Park residents against eviction for unpaid rent. Amid the unrest, some protesters allegedly threw a petrol bomb into the first floor of the Home Affairs building, sparking a fire that spread from a neighbouring block of flats. Schreiber said Home Affairs had opened a criminal case and was working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure convictions. 'Home Affairs is collating evidence and will open criminal charges against the anarchists who set a block of flats on fire in Germiston, which then spread to the neighbouring Home Affairs office. It is nothing less than an attack on our social infrastructure and cannot stand,' he said. Police arrested two people on Tuesday and took two more into custody on Thursday. 'For those who jumped to conclusions designed to fuel another type of fire: all four are South Africans, who will be prosecuted because we are governed by law, not prejudice,' Schreiber added. The department has deployed mobile offices to continue providing services in the area. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Parolee accused of posing as Hawks boss denied bail
The Hatfield Magistrate's Court has denied bail to a 41-year-old man, who has been identified as a parolee. Thabo Enoch Theletsane (41) is facing charges of fraud and impersonating a police official. Theletsane had allegedly conned two Pretoria victims while impersonating a Hawks boss. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the case has been postponed to September 2 for transfer to Court 16 at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. It is alleged that on October 25, 2024, while out on parole for a previous fraud conviction, Theletsane contacted a prominent businessman via WhatsApp using a profile picture of former Hawks boss Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya. 'During the conversation, he allegedly claimed his phone had been hacked and that the businessman would be contacted by a 'Mr. Mokoena', supposedly a cybercrime unit officer,' said Mahanjana. Mahanjana said that posing as 'Mr. Mokoena', Theletsane allegedly told the businessman that his phone had been hacked and requested frequently used contact numbers. She added that he is accused of later contacting another person using those numbers, demanding R50 000 for a hard drive to 'store' their information. Mahanjana stated that the complainant reportedly paid the amount, while the other person initially refused. 'Both later opened fraud cases on November 1, 2024. Following an investigation, Theletsane was arrested on May 10.' She said in his bail bid, Theletsane claimed he had seven children and another on the way, adding that the parole board might reconsider revoking his parole if he were granted bail. However, prosecutor Dikeledi Moganyaka opposed the application, citing an affidavit from investigating officer Mpho Phantinah Dlamini. Dlamini alleged that the accused gave a false address during the investigation, has two prior convictions for fraud and forgery from 2020, and is likely to reoffend if released. The magistrate agreed, noting that Theletsane allegedly committed the new offences only days after being released on parole, and that releasing him would be in the interest of justice.
