A scoop of competition: Hanwha's Benson challenges Baskin-Robbins' 40-year reign

Kim Dong-sun, vice president of Hanwha Galleria and third son of Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-youn, on Friday launched premium ice cream brand Benson with its first store, Benson Creamery Seoul, in Apgujeong. All eyes are on whether it can challenge market leader Baskin-Robbins.
Betterscoop Creamery is a new Hanwha Galleria subsidiary led by Oh Min-woo, who also oversaw the launch of the hamburger chain Five Guys in Seoul in 2023. 'Vice President Kim was deeply involved in the brand's direction and decision-making,' Oh said during a May 19 press briefing.
This isn't Hanwha Galleria's first foray into ice cream. In 2018, it launched EBA (Everything But Artificial) Ice Cream, which was discontinued in 2023 due to limited reach and low brand recognition. Learning from that, Hanwha has taken a more strategic approach with Benson, applying for a new trademark and securing a dedicated manufacturing facility in Pocheon.
Benson is positioned as a premium offering, using only domestic milk and cream, acacia honey, and single-origin Tanzanian chocolate. A single 100g cup is priced at 5,300 won ($3.73) — about 1,400 won more than a Baskin-Robbins single regular. A pint (320g) costs 15,300 won, 5,500 won more than Baskin-Robbins' 9,800 won.
'The target demographics for Benson and Baskin-Robbins are likely very different,' an industry insider noted. 'Benson's location in Apgujeong signals a deliberate premium strategy.' The company plans to open 10 to 20 directly operated stores this year.
While market entry won't be easy, CEO Oh said the goal is not direct competition. 'We're not reacting to any one competitor. We hope to elevate the overall ice cream market and offer more options to consumers.'
Meanwhile, SPC's Baskin-Robbins is marking its 40th anniversary in Korea with a renewed brand vision, 'ICET' (Innovation, Collaboration, Environment, Technology).
'We aim to go beyond variety and explore new value,' said Hur Hee-soo, SPC Group vice president and son of Chairman Hur Young-in, credited with bringing Shake Shack to Seoul in 2016.
Baskin-Robbins recently launched a Cheongdam flagship store featuring its Deep Collection, made with higher milk fat and Echire milk, alongside lower-calorie, reduced-sugar options and AI-developed flavors. Since its first store opened in Myeong-dong in 1986, the brand has expanded to over 1,500 locations nationwide.

The university also pledged to ensure that credits earned could be transferred when students return to Harvard. The university seeks to appoint distinguished international faculty, including scholars from Harvard, as visiting professors with support such as housing and relocation assistance. 'In times like these, we must ensure that the next generation of scholars can continue their academic journeys without disruption,' said Kim Dong-won, president of Korea University. 'We will do all we can to support talented individuals whose education and research have been jeopardized.' The Trump administration formally notified Harvard University that its Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification had been revoked on May 22, barring the university from hosting international students on F-1 or J-1 visas. However, a US court issued a temporary injunction the next day, allowing affected students and researchers to retain their visa status while legal proceedings are underway.

SK hynix is heading to Silicon Valley this week to host its annual SK Global Forum aimed at recruiting top-tier tech talent for artificial intelligence development, the company said Thursday. The world's leading memory chip-maker is hosting the three-day forum from Friday in Santa Clara, California, bringing together company executives and US-based engineers, researchers and graduate students to discuss the future of memory technology. 'It is time for us to strengthen our capabilities in computing system architecture as we expand our presence in the AI memory ecosystem,' the company said. 'We established a new session for system architecture in our forum to engage with experts in this field.' SK hynix said its CEO Kwak Noh-jung will be leading the forum, delivering the keynote to outline the company's strategy for navigating the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Other top chiefs, including Kim Joo-sun, the president in charge of AI infrastructure; Ahn Hyun, the chief development officer; and Chief Technology Officer Cha Seon-yong will also join the event to meet with invitees and lead discussions on memory innovation and future product roadmaps, the company said. In a first for the forum, the chipmaker has set up a separate area to showcase its core technologies for AI data centers and on-device AI solutions, including high bandwidth memory, enterprise SSD and LPCAMM2 module, for the participants. 'We have been strengthening our technological competitive edge by recruiting excellent talent through the global forum,' said Shin Sang-kyu, head of Corporate Culture at SK hynix. Acting President Lee Ju-ho on Thursday called for concerted efforts by countries to restore a "cooperative and inclusive" economic environment that benefits all, amid complex crises and uncertainties threatening to undermine prosperity. Lee made the call in a virtual message to an international forum taking place on the southern island of Jeju, underscoring the importance of seeking "new solutions" to the many challenges arising from ongoing conflicts and a shift in the international order. "The ongoing armed conflicts in Europe and the Middle East pose serious challenges to the rules-based international order, while the climate crisis fundamentally threatens the sustainable prosperity of humanity," Lee said in the keynote speech during the opening session of the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity. Lee pointed out that the global economy now faces "structural instability," driven by rising protectionism and economic nationalism, supply chain bottlenecks, and volatile financial markets. "We must move beyond the logic of power and strengthen the rules-based international order and global governance. We must also work to restore a cooperative and inclusive economic environment," he said. Lee, the education minister, noted that the rapid advancement of cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence, is opening up new opportunities for humanity, while at the same time, posing serious challenges to social and ethical norms. Lee underscored the need to enhance international solidarity to achieve carbon neutrality and narrow the digital divide, while strengthening cooperation on cybersecurity and establishing global norms for the ethical use of AI. "In today's hyper-connected world, it is time for us to seek new solutions to overcome these intertwined crises," he said. Oh Young-hoon, governor of Jeju Province, voiced hope that the forum will become a platform for solidarity to overcome conflicts and uncertainties, and move toward peace and sustainability. "Conflicts around the globe are no longer confined to their regions. They are creating political and economic ripple effects worldwide," Oh said. "We must seize opportunities within the crisis and take immediate action toward innovation. Without innovation, we cannot achieve security, sustainable development, overcome structural violence like poverty and discrimination, or realize lasting peace," Oh said. "Jeju is rapidly growing into a global hub for international dialogue ...
