KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles shuttlers Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun hope their success in the Malaysian Masters will mark the start of a more consistent run for them on the big stage.
Inconsistency has been Wei Chong-Kai Wun's biggest challenge, with the pair known for winning one or two titles a year but losing in the early rounds in the rest of their tournaments.
The duo are keen to put an end to this issue and become a more solid pair.
Yesterday, Wei Chong-Kai Wun captured their second title of the year in the Malaysian Masters after battling hard to upstage senior teammates Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik 21-12, 15-21, 21-16 in 50 minutes at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.
It was a statement victory for the world No. 8 as they crowned their fine run which also included stunning wins over world No. 2 home pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (last eight) and Japan's 2021 world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi (semi-finals).
Wei Chong-Kai Wun also ended the long wait for a home men's doubles champion in the tourney after Goh V Shem-Lim Kim Wah were the last winners in 2013.
The pair, who added to their Indonesian Masters triumph in January, were pleased with the win but believe the real test will be for them to maintain their form.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun's performances dipped after their title win in Indonesia before they regained their form in the home tourney.
'After Indonesia, we lost in the early rounds in all our tournaments. We discussed how to become more consistent as for the past few years, we will win a tournament, then tend to lose in early rounds,' said Wei Chong.
'So, we have been finding ways to try to make our performances more solid.
'Our test will be in the next few tournaments because we have not managed to maintain our form before this.
'Today (yesterday), we are champions but tomorrow (today) we need to prepare again for our next tournaments,' added Wei Chong.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun, who turned around their form superbly after suffering a second round defeat in the Thailand Open last week, believe that they are slowly getting better under coach Herry Iman Pierngadi.
Indonesian Herry replaced Tan Bin Shen as the men's doubles head coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in February.
'We are slowly adapting to Herry's coaching methods. After losing early last week, he has been trying to improve our mental strength,' said Kai Wun.
'We did well in this tournament. We were quite consistent here, so we need to keep up this mentality.
'It's really special to win at home as many supporters came to cheer for both pairs in the final. The atmosphere was great and it feels different compared to winning overseas.'
Meanwhile, world No. 3 Aaron-Wooi Yik were also reasonably satisfied with their efforts after reaching three finals in just two months.
The pair captured the Asian Championships last month and the Thailand Open last week and were understandably not at their best physically in the final.
'Today (yesterday), Wei Chong-Kai Wun played better than us. We made too many unforced errors and this contributed to our defeat,' said Aaron.
'Our performance here was still acceptable but we still have lots to improve.'
Wooi Yik said: 'We have to admit that our condition was not 100 percent but this is a challenge every player faces.
'This is the challenge for us to get better but this is not the reason we lost. I think we can do better.'
Both Wei Chong-Kai Wun and Aaron-Wooi Yik will next turn their attention to the Singapore Open which starts tomorrow.

May be tough for Tze Yong to regain old form after ACL setback

KUALA LUMPUR: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained by national men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong may well see him struggle to regain his old form, said former world number one Roslin Hashim. The ex-national shuttler also admitted that even before the ACL injury, Tze Yong's performances of late had been quite shaky since returning to action in April following a back injury. 'When Tze Yong sustained the lower back injury previously, he had to undergo surgery... now he has got an ACL injury (knee). These two lower parts of the body are extremely crucial to a shuttler. 'When he came back to action (after his lower back injury), his performance wasn't that stable either. At an age where he should be reaching his peak powers but, unfortunately, he has suffered another serious injury and his recovery this time will take a long time. So, it will be difficult for Tze Yong to regain his old form,' he told Bernama. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed in a statement yesterday that Tze Yong suffered an ACL injury, with the 25-year-old shuttler also admitting to finding it hard to accept this latest injury blow after all the efforts he had put in to get back to action. BAM singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said Tze Yong, who may be sidelined for nine to 12 months, is currently undergoing prehabilitation (prehab) to strengthen the knee and the surrounding muscles ahead of the scheduled surgery for the ACL injury he sustained at the 2025 Malaysia Masters last month. Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April. Despite his bleak assessment of Tze Yong's situation, Roslin, however, hopes the 2022 Commonwealth Games men's singles silver medallist possesses a burning desire and determination to fight back from adversity. 'I sympathise with Tze Yong, I hope he remains strong. If he intends to get back on the court, he will need every ounce of his inner strength and remain steadfast in facing this latest setback,' he said. Roslin, winner of the men's singles gold medal at the 2001 SEA Games, said the absence of the Johor-born Tze Yong, ranked 199 in the world, has also been a huge loss for the national camp. He admitted that Tze Yong is a player with huge potential, having once risen to as high as 14th in the world, and has the qualities required to be one of the world's top shuttlers. 'It's like we have lost a truly good player. We could see his potential as he won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games... unfortunately, injuries have curtailed his progress,' he said.

Ligament injury could sideline Tze Yong for a year

National singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the recent Malaysia Masters. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong could be out of top-level competition for up to a year after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the recent Malaysia Masters. Badminton Association of Malaysia singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said Tze Yong is scheduled to undergo surgery, but the date had not been set. 'What I understand is that the stronger you can get before the surgery, the better your recovery will be. Everything we're doing right now is to give him the best chance to have a successful surgery,' he told reporters in Bukit Kiara today. He said there were also some bruises and swelling that need to go away. Jonassen said he is confident that Tze Yong will find inspiration from the experience of Spain's former Olympic champion Carolina Marin, who returned strongly after similar injuries, and make a comeback when the time is right. 'I can't speak for him (about the early retirement question), but from my understanding, he is very motivated to come back. As long as there's motivation, we must follow the path. We're taking inspiration from other top athletes who have managed to bounce back. I believe in Tze Yong's ability and determination,' he added. With Tze Yong's absence, Jonassen revealed plans to strengthen the senior men's singles squad by grooming juniors who are transitioning to the senior level this year. 'It's always a tough blow when one of your best players is out due to injury. But we will keep working hard to develop the next generation,' he said. This morning, the Badminton Association of Malaysia confirmed that Tze Yong will undergo knee surgery after scans revealed the ACL injury. 'It's tough to accept, especially after all the hard work leading up to this point, but I know this is just another challenge to overcome. I'm staying positive, following the prehab plan, and I'm fully focused on coming back stronger. I also want to thank all my fans for the kind messages – it really means a lot to me,' said Tze Yong. Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April.

Rashid believes Tze Yong can fight his way back despite tough road to recovery

KUALA LUMPUR: Former singles legend Datuk Rashid Sidek hopes men singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will make a strong comeback from his latest injury setback although it looks tough on paper. Tze Yong has to go for another round of surgery to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained at the Malaysian Masters last month and that means he will be out of the competition scene for a few months. Rashid sympathies with Tze Yong, who is currently lying at 199th spot in the world rankings. 'Tze Yong is a very determined player and I hope he will come out of this difficult situation stronger,' said Rashid. 'It will be hard for sure. Careers of former players like women singles players Julia Wong and Norshaliza Baharom were cut short because of recurring injuries. Even mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying struggled during her heydays. 'It will never be the same after a surgery. The players will have to deal with fear of aggravating the injury when they push themselves during training after making a comeback. 'The leg will be swollen when they go the extra mile in training. It's also hard for coaches to decide how much is enough when an injured player returns for training. 'I'm sorry that Tze Yong has to go through this but knowing him, I'm sure, he will go through this bravely and stay positive. With Tze Yong is out in the cold again, Malaysia's hopefuls are Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh and professional Lee Zii Jia. 'It's a tough season for Malaysia's singles department but I hope coach Kenneth (Jonassen) will be able to manage it,' he said. Tze Yong, who was forced to retire from a match against Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long due to pain in his knee at the home meet, is choosing to be optimistic. 'It's tough to accept, especially after all the hard work leading up to this point, but I know this is just another challenge to overcome,' said the 25-year-old Tze Yong, who just recently returned to competition after taking slightly over a year to recover from his previous injury. He underwent surgery for his back twice last year after injuring it during the Malaysian Open in January. 'I'm staying positive, and I'm fully focused on coming back stronger.' The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed that Tze Yong had to undergo knee surgery after scans revealed a torn ACL, requiring surgical intervention following a thorough medical examination. 'This is a difficult moment for Tze Yong, but he is mentally strong and focused on the recovery process,' said Kenneth Jonassen, BAM's director of singles. 'Our medical and coaching teams are working closely with him to ensure he gets the best care possible. We will support him every step of the way, both on and off court.'
