KUALA LUMPUR : National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong could be out of top-level competition for up to a year after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the recent Malaysia Masters.
Badminton Association of Malaysia singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said Tze Yong is scheduled to undergo surgery, but the date had not been set.
'What I understand is that the stronger you can get before the surgery, the better your recovery will be. Everything we're doing right now is to give him the best chance to have a successful surgery,' he told reporters in Bukit Kiara today. He said there were also some bruises and swelling that need to go away.
Jonassen said he is confident that Tze Yong will find inspiration from the experience of Spain's former Olympic champion Carolina Marin, who returned strongly after similar injuries, and make a comeback when the time is right.
'I can't speak for him (about the early retirement question), but from my understanding, he is very motivated to come back. As long as there's motivation, we must follow the path. We're taking inspiration from other top athletes who have managed to bounce back. I believe in Tze Yong's ability and determination,' he added.
With Tze Yong's absence, Jonassen revealed plans to strengthen the senior men's singles squad by grooming juniors who are transitioning to the senior level this year. 'It's always a tough blow when one of your best players is out due to injury. But we will keep working hard to develop the next generation,' he said.
This morning, the Badminton Association of Malaysia confirmed that Tze Yong will undergo knee surgery after scans revealed the ACL injury.
'It's tough to accept, especially after all the hard work leading up to this point, but I know this is just another challenge to overcome. I'm staying positive, following the prehab plan, and I'm fully focused on coming back stronger. I also want to thank all my fans for the kind messages – it really means a lot to me,' said Tze Yong.
Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April.

Olusegun's still blazing – veteran striker's vintage display lifts Red Warriors

On fire: Kelantan captain Ifedayo Olusegun celebrating after scoring against Kuala Lumpur at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: Kelantan captain Ifedayo Olusegun rolled back the years with a classic poacher's display by scoring twice in the first 15 minutes to lead the Red Warriors to a 3-1 win over Kuala Lumpur in the FA Cup round-of-16 first-leg tie at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium on Monday. The Nigerian, fondly known as Dayo and who now holds Bahraini citizenship, struck in the fourth minute after pouncing on a wayward back pass from KL's Ukrainian defender Dimitro Lytvyn and slotting past goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad. Olusegun doubled his tally soon after, reacting quickest to Kammeraad's spill from T. Saravanan's volley to stab home from close range. Sean Selvaraj added Kelantan's third just after the hour mark before substitute Syamer Kutty Abba volleyed home a late lifeline for KL. For Olusegun, whose career in Malaysia has seen him feature for Felda United, Selangor, Melaka, Kedah and Police, the win was about more than just his goals. 'It's not just about my goals. It's about the improvement we've made as a team. Defensively, in midfield, going forward – there's more stability now compared to our first match against Kuching. That's why we could punish Kuala Lumpur,' said the 34-year-old attacker. Olusegun, the Super League's top scorer in 2020 and 2021 and third on the all-time chart with 90 goals, emphasised the importance of team chemistry in Kelantan's resurgence. 'The harmony in the squad is very good. We've only been together a few weeks but the dressing room is positive. 'The boys are really bonding, speaking with each other, working things out. It's a big family we are building here and that's important for us.' He admitted Kelantan's poor start to the Super League season, including a 0-4 thrashing by Kuching City, had been a test but one the players had embraced. 'Although we didn't start well, it hasn't broken our spirit. We are getting better each week. As captain, I don't have to do much to keep the team together – the players are already supporting each other. It's getting better and today's result shows that.' Looking ahead, Olusegun urged caution even as Kelantan take a two-goal cushion into the second leg. 'It's still too early to dream about titles or top-three finishes,' he stressed. 'Right now, it's about finding balance and building a proper team. Maybe later in the season we'll see how far we can go – maybe top four, top five, maybe even a cup final. But today, it's about improving game by game.' He also acknowledged the challenge of Kelantan's upcoming fixtures. 'Sabah, for example, are one of the best teams in the league these past two, three seasons. We respect that. We just want to be at our best and see where we can go. The important thing is to keep improving our tactical chemistry.'

Herry's hopefuls

Top form: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun captured their maiden World Tour title in Macau earlier this month. PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi's experience could prove crucial to Malaysia's hopes of clinching gold in the World Championships which starts next Monday in Paris. In just seven months, Herry has superbly turned around the fortunes of the men's doubles shuttlers under him. Overall, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi have won five titles among them since the Indonesian replaced Tan Bin Shen as the men's doubles coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in February. World No. 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik have been the biggest winners after triumphing in the Asian Championships, Singapore Open and Thailand Open and also finished runners-up in the Malaysian Masters and China Open. World No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun impressively beat Aaron-Wooi Yik in the final in the home event while world No. 22 Roy King-Arif captured their maiden World Tour title in the Macau Open earlier this month. Can Herry guide one of the pairs to the coveted world title next? The Indonesian has produced world champions before when he was coaching in his homeland, most famously guiding Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan to three titles in 2013, 2015 and 2019. Herry is now looking to use his experience to guide one of Aaron-Wooi Yik, Wei Chong-Kai Wun or Roy King-Arif to the crown. The 62-year-old said that small details could prove the difference between victory and defeat in Paris. 'In the world meet, there is very little separating the top men's pairs. Whichever pair is better prepared and take their opportunities well will win the title,' said Herry after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'I've been using video analysis to see the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents. 'It's important to analyse all our opponents' latest matches as pairs always can train and come up with new strategies. 'I've also been having discussions with our pairs and tweaking their strategies to help them gain an edge over rivals.' Malaysia have won the world title only once so far when Aaron-Wooi Yik memorably ended the country's long wait in 2022 in Tokyo. The pair will again be Malaysia's best bet for the gold. Aaron-Wooi Yik have received a bye in the first round and will open their campaign in the second round against either Scotland's Christopher Grimley-Mathew Grimley or Spain's Daniel Franco-Rodrigo Sanjurjo. A win could see Aaron-Wooi Yik play Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi in the third round. Roy King-Arif though need to overcome tricky pairs Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura from Japan and Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren in the first and second rounds respectively if they hope to meet Aaron-Wooi Yik. Wei Chong-Kai Wun will likely face Popov brothers Christo and Toma Junior from France in the second round. Malaysia will also be represented by independent world No. 3 duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who will will play the winners of the match between Thailand's Peeratchai Sukphun-Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Americans Chen Zhi-yi-Presley Smith in the second round.
