BAM ready to support Lee Zii Jia after worrying Instagram posts

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has expressed readiness to support independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia, following a string of troubling images he posted on Instagram. Zii Jia raised concern among fans five days ago after uploading cryptic pictures, including one of a stitched-up figure holding a bloodstained needle — prompting speculation about the 27-year-old's mental well-being. While the National Sports Council (NSC) said they had contacted Team LZJ and found no signs of mental or personal issues, BAM secretary-general Kenny Goh told English daily The Star that the national body remained open to offering assistance. 'As the badminton governing body in Malaysia, we are concerned about all players,' Kenny was quoted as saying today at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara. 'We know that many have contacted Zii Jia to ask about his posts, including the NSC. If Zii Jia needs help and support, we are willing to help him — if we have the expertise.' Zii Jia has endured a tough year, competing only in the Orleans Masters and All-England in March after suffering an ankle injury last December. He has also withdrawn from the upcoming Japan Open from July 15-20, with no clear timeline for his return to competitive action.

National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong to undergo ACL surgery in Qatar after Malaysia Masters injury

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will undergo knee surgery in Doha, Qatar to treat an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he is currently suffering from. The update was shared by Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh when speaking to the media yesterday. 'The National Sports Institute (NSI) is currently arranging the dates for his surgery. We should know when he will be going in two to three days,' he said. BAM had confirmed previously that Tze Yong sustained an ACL injury following an MRI scan that revealed a tear in his right knee. The Johor-born shuttler suffered the injury during the first round of the Malaysia Masters 2025 last month in a match against Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long, which forced him to retire mid-game. — Bernama

Toh Ee Wei: Chen Tang Jie and I are finding our groove again

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — National mixed doubles player Toh Ee Wei said she is finding her rhythm again with partner Chen Tang Jie after they were reunited in April. However, she said there is still a lot of work to be done before she and Tang Jie could restore their performance to its previous peak. 'At the Singapore Open, we didn't perform well. But we tried to get our focus back at the Indonesia Open, and we entered the semi-final. 'I think we are slowly regaining our form. There is more to improve and we need to keep training hard,' she said when met at a training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today. In March, the Badminton Association of Malaysia announced that the world number four pair would be split to allow the coach to try new combinations following tension in their partnership. However, Tang Jie and Ee Wei were reunited at the recent Sudirman Cup and helped Malaysia reach the quarter-finals. — Bernama

Ligament injury could sideline Tze Yong for a year

National singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the recent Malaysia Masters. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong could be out of top-level competition for up to a year after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the recent Malaysia Masters. Badminton Association of Malaysia singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said Tze Yong is scheduled to undergo surgery, but the date had not been set. 'What I understand is that the stronger you can get before the surgery, the better your recovery will be. Everything we're doing right now is to give him the best chance to have a successful surgery,' he told reporters in Bukit Kiara today. He said there were also some bruises and swelling that need to go away. Jonassen said he is confident that Tze Yong will find inspiration from the experience of Spain's former Olympic champion Carolina Marin, who returned strongly after similar injuries, and make a comeback when the time is right. 'I can't speak for him (about the early retirement question), but from my understanding, he is very motivated to come back. As long as there's motivation, we must follow the path. We're taking inspiration from other top athletes who have managed to bounce back. I believe in Tze Yong's ability and determination,' he added. With Tze Yong's absence, Jonassen revealed plans to strengthen the senior men's singles squad by grooming juniors who are transitioning to the senior level this year. 'It's always a tough blow when one of your best players is out due to injury. But we will keep working hard to develop the next generation,' he said. This morning, the Badminton Association of Malaysia confirmed that Tze Yong will undergo knee surgery after scans revealed the ACL injury. 'It's tough to accept, especially after all the hard work leading up to this point, but I know this is just another challenge to overcome. I'm staying positive, following the prehab plan, and I'm fully focused on coming back stronger. I also want to thank all my fans for the kind messages – it really means a lot to me,' said Tze Yong. Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei march into Indonesia Open semi-finals

The reunited Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei showed they are still a force to be reckoned with despite their brief separation. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei came from a game down today to defeat Danish pair Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch Andreasen and enter the Indonesia Open semi-finals. The Malaysian world No 4 dug deep into their reserves before overcoming the 27th ranked Danish pair 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 in a 50-minute battle – their first encounter in international tournaments. Tang Jie-Ee Wei, reunited after a brief separation by the Badminton Association of Malaysia, showed glimpses of their old form, indicating that they are contenders for the Indonesia Open Super 1000 series title. In the semi-finals, Tang Jie-Ee Wei will meet world No 6 Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran, who defeated Malaysia's world No 5 shuttlers Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie in straight sets. The married couple lost 16-21, 12-21 to Dechapol-Supissara in a match that lasted only 33 minutes. The pairs have met eight times this year with Dechapol-Supissara winning five of the encounters. Tang Jie-Ee Wei have won three titles in the World Tour series: the French Orleans Masters and Taipei Open in 2023, and the Korea Open last year. They made it to the Super 1000 series finals in December, but lost to a Chinese pair.
