National men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong to undergo ACL surgery in Qatar after Malaysia Masters injury
The update was shared by Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh when speaking to the media yesterday.
'The National Sports Institute (NSI) is currently arranging the dates for his surgery. We should know when he will be going in two to three days,' he said.
BAM had confirmed previously that Tze Yong sustained an ACL injury following an MRI scan that revealed a tear in his right knee.
The Johor-born shuttler suffered the injury during the first round of the Malaysia Masters 2025 last month in a match against Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long, which forced him to retire mid-game. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi's experience could prove crucial to Malaysia's hopes of clinching gold in the World Championships which starts next Monday in Paris. In just seven months, Herry has superbly turned around the fortunes of the men's doubles shuttlers under him. Overall, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi have won five titles among them since the Indonesian replaced Tan Bin Shen as the men's doubles coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in February. World No. 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik have been the biggest winners after triumphing in the Asian Championships, Singapore Open and Thailand Open and also finished runners-up in the Malaysian Masters and China Open. World No. 7 Wei Chong-Kai Wun impressively beat Aaron-Wooi Yik in the final in the home event while world No. 22 Roy King-Arif captured their maiden World Tour title in the Macau Open earlier this month. Can Herry guide one of the pairs to the coveted world title next? The Indonesian has produced world champions before when he was coaching in his homeland, most famously guiding Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan to three titles in 2013, 2015 and 2019. Herry is now looking to use his experience to guide one of Aaron-Wooi Yik, Wei Chong-Kai Wun or Roy King-Arif to the crown. The 62-year-old said that small details could prove the difference between victory and defeat in Paris. "In the world meet, there is very little separating the top men's pairs. Whichever pair is better prepared and take their opportunities well will win the title," said Herry after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. "I've been using video analysis to see the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents. "It's important to analyse all our opponents' latest matches as pairs always can train and come up with new strategies. "I've also been having discussions with our pairs and tweaking their strategies to help them gain an edge over rivals." Malaysia have won the world title only once so far when Aaron-Wooi Yik memorably ended the country's long wait in 2022 in Tokyo. The pair will again be Malaysia's best bet for the gold. Aaron-Wooi Yik have received a bye in the first round and will open their campaign in the second round against either Scotland's Christopher Grimley-Mathew Grimley or Spain's Daniel Franco-Rodrigo Sanjurjo. A win could see Aaron-Wooi Yik play Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi in the third round. Roy King-Arif though need to overcome tricky pairs Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura from Japan and Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren in the first and second rounds respectively if they hope to meet Aaron-Wooi Yik. Wei Chong-Kai Wun will likely face Popov brothers Christo and Toma Junior from France in the second round. Hannah: No official target, but perform your best in Paris
PUTRAJAYA: No official target has been set for the national shuttlers at the World Championships in Paris next week, but those under the Road to Gold (RTG) programme will still be monitored. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who is also the RTG chairman, said that while the world meet is not part of the players' key performance index (KPI), they are still expected to perform as the government has invested significantly in them. Of the 13 players bound for Paris, six are in the RTG programme – 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (men's doubles), Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah (women's doubles), Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles). 'Our KPI is not tied to the World Championships but to world rankings. For RTG athletes, we have two years to evaluate their rankings, and they are being monitored by Datuk Dr. Ramlan Abdul Aziz and P. Vellapandian from the RTG committee. 'My main concern is the packed badminton calendar. I worry they may suffer from fatigue as they are constantly competing. For the RTG shuttlers, I always pray they remain injury-free because injuries would make things very difficult. 'We are monitoring them closely because whatever they need has already been provided. The RTG shuttlers lack nothing,' said Hannah. She also reminded the players not to focus too much on potential rewards, stressing that winning medals must come first. 'When competing, don't think too much about rewards. Even if there are none, I believe they will still give their best because the government has already invested heavily in them,' she added. When Aaron-Wooi Yik created history by clinching the world title in 2022, they received RM300,000 in incentives from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

Kelantan shine at home with superb win
PETALING JAYA: Kelantan made home advantage count in emphatic fashion, brushing aside Kuala Lumpur 3-1 in the FA Cup round-of-16 first leg at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru on Monday (Aug 18). The Red Warriors struck early through their captain Ifedayo Olusegun, who punished a poor backpass from KL's Ukrainian defender Dimitro Lytyn with a calm finish past goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad in just the fourth minute.
