Toh Ee Wei: Chen Tang Jie and I are finding our groove again

Malay Mail13-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — National mixed doubles player Toh Ee Wei said she is finding her rhythm again with partner Chen Tang Jie after they were reunited in April.
However, she said there is still a lot of work to be done before she and Tang Jie could restore their performance to its previous peak.
'At the Singapore Open, we didn't perform well. But we tried to get our focus back at the Indonesia Open, and we entered the semi-final.
'I think we are slowly regaining our form. There is more to improve and we need to keep training hard,' she said when met at a training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today.
In March, the Badminton Association of Malaysia announced that the world number four pair would be split to allow the coach to try new combinations following tension in their partnership.
However, Tang Jie and Ee Wei were reunited at the recent Sudirman Cup and helped Malaysia reach the quarter-finals. — Bernama

Hannah: No official target, but perform your best in Paris

PUTRAJAYA: No official target has been set for the national shuttlers at the World Championships in Paris next week, but those under the Road to Gold (RTG) programme will still be monitored. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who is also the RTG chairman, said that while the world meet is not part of the players' key performance index (KPI), they are still expected to perform as the government has invested significantly in them. Of the 13 players bound for Paris, six are in the RTG programme – 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (men's doubles), Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah (women's doubles), Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles). 'Our KPI is not tied to the World Championships but to world rankings. For RTG athletes, we have two years to evaluate their rankings, and they are being monitored by Datuk Dr. Ramlan Abdul Aziz and P. Vellapandian from the RTG committee. 'My main concern is the packed badminton calendar. I worry they may suffer from fatigue as they are constantly competing. For the RTG shuttlers, I always pray they remain injury-free because injuries would make things very difficult. 'We are monitoring them closely because whatever they need has already been provided. The RTG shuttlers lack nothing,' said Hannah. She also reminded the players not to focus too much on potential rewards, stressing that winning medals must come first. 'When competing, don't think too much about rewards. Even if there are none, I believe they will still give their best because the government has already invested heavily in them,' she added. When Aaron-Wooi Yik created history by clinching the world title in 2022, they received RM300,000 in incentives from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

Kelantan shine at home with superb win

PETALING JAYA: Kelantan made home advantage count in emphatic fashion, brushing aside Kuala Lumpur 3-1 in the FA Cup round-of-16 first leg at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru on Monday (Aug 18). The Red Warriors struck early through their captain Ifedayo Olusegun, who punished a poor backpass from KL's Ukrainian defender Dimitro Lytyn with a calm finish past goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad in just the fourth minute. Olusegun doubled his tally 10 minutes later, reacting quickest to a fumble from Kammeraad after T. Saravanan's volley, before Sean Selvaraj extended the lead in the 61st minute by turning in Nor Azam Azih's corner. Kuala Lumpur managed to salvage some hope late on when substitute Syamer Kutty Abba volleyed home a Safawi Rasid corner in the 86th minute, giving them something to fight for in the return leg. The away side should have added a second in the dying stages of the game but Safawi slipped and blazed his penalty over the bar. Meanwhile in Paroi, Negri Sembilan delivered a dominant 5-0 win over Police at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium. Bosnian winger Jovan Motika opened the floodgates with a stunning 25-metre freekick inside the first minute, and Police's night worsened when Ivorian defender Noel Agbre was sent off in the 11th minute for a last-man foul. Motika netted again in the 40th minute, finishing off a pass from Japanese playmaker Takumi Sasaki, before Joseph Esso pounced on a rebound three minutes later for the Deer's third. The Ghanaian striker added another in the 83rd minute, while substitute Mio Tsuneyasu got on the scoresheet in the 77th to cap a commanding performance.

Provide ‘detailed data' if you want MotoGP extended, says Yeoh

SIC's CEO, Azhan Shafriman Hanif, said that following the decision to give up the hosting rights for the Formula 1 grand prix, Malaysia should not 'make the same mistake with MotoGP'. (EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA : The government's decision on whether to extend Sepang International Circuit's (SIC) contract to host the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) will depend on detailed data showing the race's return on investment, says youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh. While the event had received encouraging support, Yeoh said, SIC must convince the finance ministry that the race provides comprehensive benefits. 'When we invest, we are not signing only in terms of tourism. It should help support the economy and job opportunities for Malaysians,' Bernama quoted her as saying after an event in Putrajaya today. Yeoh said the MotoGP generates about 4,500 temporary jobs annually, but the government also wanted to see long-term benefits, such as skills transfer to Malaysians. 'So, that's why data collection is important, and SIC must ensure that all this is recorded to convince the finance ministry that it is not a waste,' she said. It was reported yesterday that SIC was in talks with rights holder Dorna Sports to renew its MotoGP contract, which expires in 2026. SIC's CEO, Azhan Shafriman Hanif, was also reported as saying that following the decision to give up the hosting rights for the Formula 1 grand prix, Malaysia should not 'make the same mistake with MotoGP'. On another matter, Yeoh expressed confidence in the Malaysian badminton squad ahead of the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25 to 31. She said athletes under the Road to Gold (RTG) programme had the potential to deliver strong performances, but cautioned against injuries owing to the tight competition calendar. Among the shuttlers in the RTG programme are Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai. Separately, 80 athletes will represent Malaysia at the SEA Deaf Games in Jakarta, competing in six sports – futsal, athletics, badminton, tenpin bowling, chess, and table tennis.
