"Is there democracy in India today?" Bengal CM condemns Samvidhan Hatya Diwas
Howrah (West Bengal) [India], June 18 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday condemned the idea of observing June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' and said that she objected to the name. She questioned if democracy prevailed in the country under the current government.
Mamata Banerjee said, 'The Central government says that it will celebrate Samvidhan Hatya Diwas on completing 50 years of Emergency this year. I object to the statement 'Samvidhan Hatya'. The Constitution is the basis of our rights; it is the mother of democracy. How can they call it Samvidhan Hatya?'
She further said that a letter was received at the Secretariat and said that, according to the letter, June 25 has to be observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas.
'It is written that June 25 will be celebrated as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. The emergency did not kill any person. They could have celebrated Emergency Hatya Diwas also, but they are celebrating Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. I completely condemn this idea,' she said.
She further said that a film will also be shown on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas and the Central government is asking more power to democracy.
'Is there democracy in India today? Can every day be Republic Hatya Diwas in a democratic system because every day they are killing the republic, every day they are curtailing the fundamental rights of the people, they are also destroying the economy of the state and all the fundamental rights of the state. Are you giving more power to democracy?' she said.
'They are killing democracy every day. They are damaging fundamental rights every day. They are altering the Constitution every day. They are forcing their own agenda on the people. They are Jumla Sarkar. They took the Indian Parliament away from us and built a new one. Wasn't it a heritage? They toppled the governments of Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand. They are even demanding President's Rule for Bengal. It doesn't suit you saying more power to democracy,' she hit out at the Centre.
She went on to say that the EC is partial and worked for Centre.
'Those who do not respect the Constitution speak about constitutional morality. If something happens in Bengal, 155-156 teams are sent. What happened during the riots in Gujarat? After Pahalgam attack, when a BJP MP spoke ill about women, what happened then? It is a murder of federalism and rights. They are bulldozing the state governments after demonetisation. Incidents of injustice happen every day in UP,' she said.
She further said that not everyone supported the emergency.
'You can work politically, but the tall remarks that you made are baseless, as you are the one who killed democracy. More than 140 people died in queues during demonetisation. After Pahalgam attack, five questions have been raised by our party. None of them have been answered. The special Parliament session has also not been held,' she said. (ANI)

From Qatar, we reached India," he added. Ghazal, a student evacuated from Iran, told ANI, "We are all very happy that we returned home and the Indian Embassy evacuated us properly. We are very thankful to them... The situation in Urmia, where we lived, was much better than in Tehran." Recalling the horrors of the conflict, Yasir Gaffar, an India evacuated from Iran, said that they saw the missiles passing by and the loud sounds at night. "We saw the missiles passing by and the loud sounds at night... I am happy to reach India... I haven't given up on my dreams... When the situation improves, we will return to Iran..." he said. A student evacuated said, "I am happy that I am back in our country. We didn't see any such thing in Urmia, but in other places across Iran, the situation was bad... The Government of India helped a lot, which is why we are back home." Mariam Roz, a student evacuated, said that the Indian Embassy prepared for everything and they did not face any issues. We would see missiles from the windows of our dorm," Mariam told ANI. Another student said, "I am a final year MBBS student at Urmia University... We saw drones and missiles. We were scared... We are happy to return to India and are very thankful to the Government of India, especially the Ministry of External Affairs... Our parents were also worried, but now they are happy." Student Amaan Azhar criticised the war and said that children are suffering. "I am very happy. I cannot express in words how happy I am to be finally able to meet my family. The situation in Iran is very bad. The people there are like us; there are small children who are suffering. War is not a good thing. It kills humanity..." he told ANI. The parents of the students who evacuated also rejoiced and expressed gratitude towards the Indian government. The mother of a student evacuated from Iran said, "I am very happy my daughter has returned home. I want everyone's children to come back. Indian government has managed everything so well that our children did not face any trouble anywhere..." Speaking to ANI, the father of an evacuated student said, "My son is returning via Armenia, on the special plane sent from India. My son was doing MBBS in Iran. I have come to receive him from Kota, Rajasthan. I am happy that my son is returning home... The Government of India has made good efforts." He urged the government to also help students stuck in Tehran. He added that his son was in the border area so he has been able to make it out but people stuck in Tehran have not been able to escape the conflict. "I urge the government to help the students stuck in Tehran. My son was in the border area, and things were not so tense there, and only those living in the border areas have been able to make it out of the country. People stuck in the interior of the country, including in Tehran, have not been able to make it out so far... I want to thank the Indian Embassy in Tehran for their efforts; my son is going to reach here soon," he told ANI. States told to hold yatras on 50th year of ‘Emergency'
NEW DELHI: From organising mashaal/e-torch yatras, screening short films, and mass contact programmes to outreach in schools and colleges, the Centre has directed all state governments and Union Territories to undertake a year-long commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the 'Emergency' on June 25, as 'Constitution Murder Day'. In a letter to Chief Secretaries, the Union Culture Ministry said, 'The occasion is not merely for remembrance but for deep reflection and renewed commitment to democratic values and constitutional morality. In this regard, the Ministry of Culture is undertaking a yearlong commemoration starting on June 25, 2025, till June 25, 2026'. The highlight of the year-long events would be the Mashal/E-torch yatra, where six mashaals/e-torches representing the 'spirit of democracy' are to be flagged off from Delhi on June 25, 2025. The torch procession will culminate at Kartavya Path, New Delhi, on March 21, 2026, and will be attended by Prime Minister Modi. The details of the route map were being worked out, said the ministry. Besides the yatras, the ministry has also charted out exhibitions, seminars, speeches, and outreach to schools and colleges as part of its programmes. The ministry further asked the states to appoint a nodal officer to coordinate with the ministry regarding the events, The letter further states that on June 25, the ministry has planned mass public programmes to promote the spirit of democracy. 'The participants can carry the national flag and placards bearing pre-approved messages such as: 'More power to democracy', 'India: Mother of Democracy,' 'Long Live Democracy, and 'Salute to Sengol-in the Spirit of Democracy,' it said. To evoke a patriotic mood, patriotic songs, short films, and street plays will be continuously played and performed at the venue, the ministry said.

T'PURAM/KOZHIKODE : An off-the-cuff remark by CPM state secretary M V Govindan on the eve of the Nilambur by-election has left the LDF camp embarrassed, forcing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself to launch a fire-fighting mission. The UDF, which was on the defensive over its tie-up with the Welfare Party - the political wing of the Jama'at-e-Islami - was quick to sense the opportunity Govindan opened up by his remarks on the CPM's association with the RSS in opposing the Emergency in the 1970s. The UDF is relieved that the CPM-RSS ties took the spotlight on Wednesday, pushing its association with the Jama'at to the sidelines. After his remarks on the RSS, in a Malayalam channel, kicked up a controversy, Govindan convened a press conference to accuse the media of 'twisting' his statements. 'History should be viewed in historical perspective. There is a concerted effort to create controversy over the statement I made about the Emergency 50 years ago,' he said. Govindan asserted that the CPM has had no cooperation or understanding with the RSS till now. 'This was the case in the past, as it will be in the future... The CPM and the Janata Party, which was formed by dissolving various socialist parties, had an electoral understanding to fight the Emergency. The Janata Party and the Jan Sangha were two separate entities,' he said. In damage-control mode, Pinarayi Vijayan says CPM never appeased RSS Sensing that things were getting out of hand, Pinarayi converted his press conference in Thiruvananthapuram into a salvage mission. Making his party's position clear, he said the CPM has never had any sort of agreement with the RSS. 'We have never appeased the RSS. However, we have seen certain individuals bowing to pictures of those revered by the RSS. We have also seen a former KPCC president boasting about providing protection to RSS shakhas,' he said.
