"Plants can be plotted anywhere...": Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee addresses row over Tulsi plant

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 19 (ANI): Addressing the communal tension over planting Tulsi in place of a fruit vendor's shop, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called it an insult to the sacred plant and said that people have the right to follow their religion. On Wednesday, CM Mamata Banerjee said, 'If there can be a Dargah around Belur Math, why do such politics? Plants can be plotted anywhere... Do it with purity.' She added, 'A few plants are given importance due to their divine connection. We offer Bel leaves to Shiv, Maa Durga, and Maa Kaali. I have 40 varieties of Tulsi in my house as well. The Tulsi plant has Laxmi and Narayan. The Tulsi plant should not be just anywhere; dignity must be maintained.' Defending the fruit vendor, she said, 'A fruit vendor went home to celebrate a festival, and you planted a holy Tulsi plant in its place, insulting it? We offer Tulsi to Lord Jagannath and Lord Krishna. If you wanted to plant Tulsi, why didn't you do so in your own house?' She called this act an insult to Hindu gods and slammed people doing politics over the issue. 'I am telling this to everyone who does mean-minded is injustice and an insult to our gods. People have the right to follow their religion. So many people go to their ancestral homes during Durga Puja. Can we occupy their houses? What are you teaching people?' she said. The row began when the fruit vendor went to his hometown, where a group of people planted a Tulsi in place of his shop. Earlier on Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee condemned the idea of observing June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. She questioned whether democracy prevailed in the country under the current government. Mamata Banerjee said, 'The Central government says that it will celebrate Samvidhan Hatya Diwas on completing 50 years of Emergency this year. I object to the statement 'Samvidhan Hatya'. The Constitution is the basis of our rights; it is the mother of democracy. How can they call it Samvidhan Hatya?' She further said that a letter was received at the Secretariat stating that June 25 must be observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. 'It is written that June 25 will be celebrated as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. The emergency did not kill any person. They could have celebrated Emergency Hatya Diwas also, but they are celebrating Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. I completely condemn this idea,' she said. (ANI)

TMC govt to stay out of Centre's Emergency anniversary event: ‘mockery of democracy'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hit out at the BJP-led central government over its decision to observe June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day), marking 50 years since the imposition of the Emergency. Calling the observance a 'mockery of democracy,' Banerjee said her government would not participate in what she termed a hypocritical political exercise. 'Those who don't respect the Constitution are now talking about upholding its morality. It's a mockery,' Banerjee said. Last year, the BJP-led government at the Centre had announced that from 2025, June 25, the day Emergency was declared in 1975, would be observed as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'.The idea is to create awareness about what the Constitution stands for, and how the government has taken steps to strengthen it, an official had said . Question Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, Banerjee asked, 'Who is the Prime Minister of the country? Narendra Modi or Amit Shah? Modi keeps travelling and leaves other tasks to Amit Shah. He could just name Shah as the PM, then.' She accused the BJP of consistently attacking democratic institutions and undermining the very Constitution it now claims to uphold. 'They (BJP) are killing democracy every day, damaging fundamental rights, altering the Constitution, and pushing their agenda on people. They are the jumla sarkar,' she said, referring to the BJP's promises. Slamming the BJP over what she termed its undemocratic practices, Banerjee asked whether the 'toppling' of democratically elected governments in Maharashtra and Bihar by the BJP was not an attack on the Constitution. 'They have turned the federal structure into a joke. When anything happens in Bengal, 155 teams are sent. What happens during Gujarat riots? Or when a BJP MP speaks against women after the Pahalgam attack?.. After the Pahalgam attack, five questions have been raised by our party. None of them have been answered. The special Parliament session has also not been held,' she added. Accusing the BJP of weakening democratic checks and balances, she alleged that the BJP has ensured that all the pillars of democracy, be it the Election Commission or the media, are compromised. Banerjee also claimed that more than 140 people died during the demonetisation exercise and called November 8 'Economy Destruction Day.' The chief minister further raised objections to a reported letter from the Uttar Pradesh Raj Bhavan proposing June 20 be celebrated nationally as Bangla Divas. Calling it an insult to Bengal's identity, she said, 'Poila Boishakh has already been declared as Bangla Pratishtha Divas. Who are they to rename it?' While speaking about the Ahmedabad plane crash, she claimed the death toll was hidden and no FIR had been filed despite the deaths of junior doctors. 'Are their lives worthless?' she asked. "Is there democracy in India today?" Bengal CM condemns Samvidhan Hatya Diwas

Howrah (West Bengal) [India], June 18 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday condemned the idea of observing June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' and said that she objected to the name. She questioned if democracy prevailed in the country under the current government. Mamata Banerjee said, 'The Central government says that it will celebrate Samvidhan Hatya Diwas on completing 50 years of Emergency this year. I object to the statement 'Samvidhan Hatya'. The Constitution is the basis of our rights; it is the mother of democracy. How can they call it Samvidhan Hatya?' She further said that a letter was received at the Secretariat and said that, according to the letter, June 25 has to be observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. She further said that a film will also be shown on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas and the Central government is asking more power to democracy. 'Is there democracy in India today? Can every day be Republic Hatya Diwas in a democratic system because every day they are killing the republic, every day they are curtailing the fundamental rights of the people, they are also destroying the economy of the state and all the fundamental rights of the state. Are you giving more power to democracy?' she said. 'They are killing democracy every day. They are damaging fundamental rights every day. They are altering the Constitution every day. They are forcing their own agenda on the people. They are Jumla Sarkar. They took the Indian Parliament away from us and built a new one. Wasn't it a heritage? They toppled the governments of Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand. They are even demanding President's Rule for Bengal. It doesn't suit you saying more power to democracy,' she hit out at the Centre. She went on to say that the EC is partial and worked for Centre. 'Those who do not respect the Constitution speak about constitutional morality. If something happens in Bengal, 155-156 teams are sent. What happened during the riots in Gujarat? After Pahalgam attack, when a BJP MP spoke ill about women, what happened then? It is a murder of federalism and rights. They are bulldozing the state governments after demonetisation. Incidents of injustice happen every day in UP,' she said. She further said that not everyone supported the emergency. 'You can work politically, but the tall remarks that you made are baseless, as you are the one who killed democracy. More than 140 people died in queues during demonetisation. After Pahalgam attack, five questions have been raised by our party. None of them have been answered. The special Parliament session has also not been held,' she said. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee slams Centre over Samvidhan Hatya Diwas proposal

Kolkata: Slamming the Centre on the letter sent for observation of ' Samvidhan Hatya Diwas ', West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday this day would not be observed in the state on June 25 this year. 'You can fight against Rahul Gandhi . He is the leader of the Opposition. There are other political parties, who have been there for 20-25 years. Did you seek their opinion?' Banerjee told the media at the state secretariat. The Centre proposed the observation of the 50th year of the imposition of Emergency next week, as 'Samvidhaan Hatya diwas'. Banerjee said that 'Opinion of other political parties should have been sought on this.' Banerjee alleged the Centre is bulldozing democracy, federalism, civil rights of the people and violating the Constitution by asking to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. 'We are not ready to hear about democracy from the Centre. I totally condemn the idea of 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas.' They are killing democracy everyday. They don't believe in secularism, democracy, civic rights, rights of opposition and political rights of the opponents," Banerjee said. Live Events Banerjee accused that they ( BJP )have toppled the Maharashtra, Bihar and MP governments. They are even demanding President's Rule for Bengal,' Banerjee pointed out. 'A letter has come to the Chief Secretary that June 25 has to be celebrated as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. I was in Youth Congress then and we all know about Emergency. They could have made it anti-Emergency Diwas. The Central government is asking for more power to democracy. They are bulldozing the state economy and saying 'more power to democracy'. They have framed a 'false religion' and 'pushing your own agenda,' Banerjee slammed. Calling BJP ruled central government as 'Jumla Sarkar' Banerjee said 'They took our old heritage Parliament away from us and have built a new one. It doesn't suit you. Saying "More power to democracy" does not suit you. Mamata Banerjee on OBC Talking about High Court's OBC related stay yesterday, Banerjee said, 'Law will take its own course. This is an interim order and there is no final judgement. Once the final judgement is in, even though I cannot criticise the judge, I can criticize the judgement. They have given a few suggestions, and an order. We got the order last night and the legal team is studying it.' Talking about the state government seeking three months from the Supreme Court, Bengal Chief Minister said, 'We had sought three months from the Supreme Court in the matter. We considered what was legally suitable and worked as per SC guidelines within three months. The work was not done by the state government but by the OBC Commission , including an ex-Calcutta HC justice.' Banerjee said, 'We followed all HC rules but new questions may arise every day. CPI-M and BJP do not want OBC reservation to be passed as it is for the poor people. Reservation is for OBC, SC and ST brothers and sisters and we want it to remain. How can we snatch the rights of the 33% who have lived here since Independence? Their properties and jobs and education must be slashed. Won't you accord them basic human necessities and dignity? In what was done, 60 groups were non-Muslims.'

'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas': West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Slams Centre, Says BJP Kills Democracy Daily West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has launched a blistering attack on the BJP-led Centre ahead of its planned observation of "Constitution Murder Day" on June 25, commemorating the 1975 Emergency. She accused the Modi government of daily violating the Constitution, undermining federalism, and destroying democracy. Banerjee questioned the moral authority of those who "topple elected governments" like in Maharashtra and Bihar and then preach about constitutional values. She claimed BJP has consistently disrespected the Constitution and mocked democratic institutions. Hitting out further, Mamata called for observing November 8 as 'Economy Destruction Day'—in memory of demonetisation, which she said ruined India's economy. "Don't teach us democracy," she said. "Those destroying its foundation cannot give us lessons."
