TMC govt to stay out of Centre's Emergency anniversary event: ‘mockery of democracy'
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hit out at the BJP-led central government over its decision to observe June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day), marking 50 years since the imposition of the Emergency.
Calling the observance a 'mockery of democracy,' Banerjee said her government would not participate in what she termed a hypocritical political exercise. 'Those who don't respect the Constitution are now talking about upholding its morality. It's a mockery,' Banerjee said.
Last year, the BJP-led government at the Centre had announced that from 2025, June 25, the day Emergency was declared in 1975, would be observed as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'.The idea is to create awareness about what the Constitution stands for, and how the government has taken steps to strengthen it, an official had said .
Question Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, Banerjee asked, 'Who is the Prime Minister of the country? Narendra Modi or Amit Shah? Modi keeps travelling and leaves other tasks to Amit Shah. He could just name Shah as the PM, then.'
She accused the BJP of consistently attacking democratic institutions and undermining the very Constitution it now claims to uphold. 'They (BJP) are killing democracy every day, damaging fundamental rights, altering the Constitution, and pushing their agenda on people. They are the jumla sarkar,' she said, referring to the BJP's promises.
Slamming the BJP over what she termed its undemocratic practices, Banerjee asked whether the 'toppling' of democratically elected governments in Maharashtra and Bihar by the BJP was not an attack on the Constitution.
'They have turned the federal structure into a joke. When anything happens in Bengal, 155 teams are sent. What happens during Gujarat riots? Or when a BJP MP speaks against women after the Pahalgam attack?.. After the Pahalgam attack, five questions have been raised by our party. None of them have been answered. The special Parliament session has also not been held,' she added.
Accusing the BJP of weakening democratic checks and balances, she alleged that the BJP has ensured that all the pillars of democracy, be it the Election Commission or the media, are compromised.
Banerjee also claimed that more than 140 people died during the demonetisation exercise and called November 8 'Economy Destruction Day.'
The chief minister further raised objections to a reported letter from the Uttar Pradesh Raj Bhavan proposing June 20 be celebrated nationally as Bangla Divas. Calling it an insult to Bengal's identity, she said, 'Poila Boishakh has already been declared as Bangla Pratishtha Divas. Who are they to rename it?'
While speaking about the Ahmedabad plane crash, she claimed the death toll was hidden and no FIR had been filed despite the deaths of junior doctors. 'Are their lives worthless?' she asked.

The report lends credence to India's long-standing concerns, effectively confirming that Canada has become a safe haven for anti-India CSIS report also highlighted that Politically Motivated Violent Extremism (PMVE) in Canada has largely been driven by Canada-Based Khalistan i Extremists (CBKEs) seeking to establish an independent Khalistan, primarily within India's Punjab state.'A small group of individuals are considered Khalistani extremists because they continue to use Canada as a base for the promotion, fundraising or planning of violence primarily in India,' the report noted.'In particular, real and perceived Khalistani extremism emerging from Canada continues to drive Indian foreign interference activities in Canada.'This development comes just a day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney , met on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. 42 PC BC Quota: Jagruthi threatens to file mass nominations in local body polls
Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi President and BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Wednesday said that if the state government fails to implement 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections, her organisation would stall the election process by filing hundreds of nominations in every village across the state as a form of protest. Addressing a press conference here at her residence on Wednesday, Kavitha criticized Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for failing to raise the BC reservation bill issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite having visited Delhi numerous times. She sarcastically remarked that Revanth could earn a Guinness World Record for the most visits to Delhi without achieving any results. MLC Kavitha alleged that the Chief Minister was not genuinely committed to securing approval for the BC Bill. Kavitha ridiculed the BJP's plan to organize a 'Telangana Vikasit Yatra' in support of the BC Bill. She stated that unless the BJP clearly supports the BC Bill, people will not trust their political moves, regardless of how many rallies they organize. Highlighting the intensifying agitation, Kavitha announced a massive 'Rail Roko' protest on July 17 demanding BC reservations. She urged citizens to reschedule any travel plans between July 16 and 18. She noted that various caste-based organizations, including SC and ST groups, were extending support to the Telangana Jagruthi movement. She slammed the CM's 'paper tiger' stance, stating that though he calls himself the 'Nallamala Tiger,' he has failed to act against projects like the proposed 150 TMC Bollapalli reservoir, which threatens to submerge the Nallamala forest. Telangana Jagruthi, she said, would approach the courts over the issue. MLC Kavitha challenged Chief Minister Revanth Reddy: 'If you are truly the son of Nallamala, stop the Bollapalli reservoir.' She also demanded that the Chief Minister to demand the central government to convene an Apex Council meeting immediately and push the Centre to act on Telangana's water concerns. MLC Kavitha called for an end to 'Operation Kagaar', urging both the central and state governments to initiate dialogue with Maoists. She expressed condolences on the death of Telangana Maoist leader Gajjala Ravi in an encounter and extended sympathies to his family.

BJP MLA files petitions to quash criminal cases; HC issues notices
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court single bench of Justice Kunuru Lakshman on Wednesday adjudicated three criminal petitions filed by Venkataramana Reddy Katipally, MLA (BJP) from Kamareddy district, seeking directions to quash three criminal cases registered against him and others. The court issued notices to the complainants. The judge dispensed with appearance of the MLA before the lower court and adjourned the petitions to July 10 for further hearing.
