May is National Burger Month: 5 essential Tallahassee spots to try for the food holiday

Yahoo22-05-2025

May is National Burger Month and while you may have celebrated without even realizing, the food holiday National Hamburger Day lands on May 28.
To help you get in the spirit, the Tallahassee Democrat went parading around to get our hands on a few stacks we think are both worthy of your dollars and appetite.
It's easy to forget all the pleasures of a good, hand-cooked burger when you can conveniently grab them at a drive-thru. While those can hit the spot at times, our hope is that you'll get out to explore the charming atmosphere at local eateries and enjoy a juicy Tallahassee-made burger.
Here's where to start:
325 N. Bronough St.; 850-222-1075; birdsoystershack.com
Oysters may be the main attraction listed in their name, but if you ask true hamburger fans about their favorite picks in town, Bird's is bound to be on the list. Their 10-ounce patty is a big, juicy burger ($15). Bird's offers a long list of toppings, ranging from pickles to pineapple to decorate your burgers. Burgers are served on a Kaiser roll with a side of either French fries, onion rings or coleslaw. Their specialty burgers can be enjoyed both outside on the picnic tables or inside where fun, funky decor fills the space and live entertainment and karaoke nights bring the space alive.
805 S. Macomb St.; 850-766-7143; Facebook
Originating in Perry, Florida, this burger joint located on South Macomb Street offers towering burgers that aren't for the faint of heart. Its most popular stacks includes the signature "Nelson Burger," dressed with lettuce, tomato, American cheese, onion, pickle, mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard ($10.99). Another fan favorite is the mushroom Swiss burger topped with a generous pile of grilled onion and a mayonnaise shmear ($14.99). Get this, you're not limited by just a double stack, for $7 extra you can get up to four patties for a sky high, jaw-dropping bite. This space offers all the right vibes for anyone whose looking to enjoy a serious game of poker, a hearty laugh at its weekly comedy night and sip on cocktails for a full experience.
3813 N. Monroe St.; 850-562-6500; Facebook
Salty Dawg Pub & Deli, nestled in the Lake Jackson Trading Post retail center, is a vet in the burger game with over 37 years of operation under its belt. Less is more at this pub with only five burgers to choose from. Whichever you pick you're in for a treat with an option to customize your entree with all the fixings. The classic bacon cheeseburger is "perfection, baby," as co-owner Lana Radke, puts it. She prepared it for the Tallahassee Democrat topping the patties with a layer of crispy bacon, a gooey cheese melt and golden buns that hug it all together ($8.99). Switch it up with the patty melt served on toasted rye bread ($8.99). This spot expresses it's cozy, family friendly charm with its attentive staff and decor both inside and out, making it a standout. No wonder its been around for so long.
663 Railroad Square; 786-568-9864; order.toasttab.com/online/trapboyburger-railroadsquare
Lots of people have been singing their praises for this burger joint. If you haven't been on social media lately, let us help you catch you. Trap Boy Burger has been open for only three months and as its name circulates around on all the socials, more people have been flocking to the spot to get their hands on the signature smash burger to try it for themselves. For $7.49 you can grab a single "Trap Boy Cheese Burger" topped with its signature sauce, pickles and onions. Order a side of its shoestring fries ($3.99) to dip in its craveable "Trap Boy Sauce." You may want to order this burger to go. While there are a few seats outdoors on the deck, you may want a little privacy once you get a bite. This isn't clean eating, especially if you get extra sauce on your burger.
2520 W. Tharpe St.; (850) 224-9766; woodchucks-cafe.com
They say some of the best food places are hole-in-the-wall spots and this would ring true for Woodchuck's Cafe. Located next to the Sunoco gas station on West Tharpe Street, this hidden gem decorated in woodchuck decor might take you by surprise. They tote a generous list of burgers, including the "King Kong" a double stack burger topped with 2 slices of cheese, stuffed with golden French fries ($12.75). The "Breakfast Burger" is made with an egg (prepared as guest choice) and crispy bacon piled between two pancake buns ($12.75). Pro tip, this burger deliciously pairs with funnel cake fries ($1.50). For the last 13 years Woodchuck's Cafe has offered a casual dining space with an abundant selection of specialty breakfast items, sandwiches, desserts and more.

Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani hit historic home runs as Dodgers defeat Yankees

Two of baseball's biggest stars lined up against each other on Friday and produced a blockbuster, historic game. First Aaron Judge and then Shohei Ohtani homered at their respective first at bats of the game, making history as the first reigning MVPs to hit a home run in the opening inning of the same game. That opening salvo promised a thrilling game, one worthy of its billing as a rematch of last season's World Series. And like in the Fall Classic, the Los Angeles Dodgers came back to defeat the New York Yankees, overturning a three-run deficit at the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-5 win at Dodger Stadium. 'It was a really good start to the game, it was a back and forth between two really good teams and I'm glad we came out at the top,' Ohtani said afterward through interpreter Will Ireton. The Japanese superstar has already scored 60 runs this season, reaching that milestone faster than any other MLB player in the modern era, according to OptaSTATS. 'I feel like he was copying me,' Judge joked afterward, telling reporters about Ohtani's home run just after his own. 'He's impressive. He's one of the best players in the game for a reason; what he can do in the box, on the basepaths, once he gets back on the mound, it's special.' Though Ohtani's homer tied the game, the Yankees displayed their impressively deep offensive line-up with Austin Wells, Trent Grisham, and Paul Goldschmidt all contributing home runs of their own to make it 5-2 after the fifth inning. There was still time for Ohtani to add a second homer to his tally, and he smashed one out to right center field at the bottom of the sixth, sparking a four-run inning that changed the complexion of the game. That homer, Ohtani's league-leading 22nd of the season, marked the first of five consecutive Dodgers hits, loading the bases and making it a high scoring inning. 'With Shohei, he would probably say it's just like any other game,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters afterward. 'But I do think that when you see the reigning MVP on the other side, and going out there and performing, that brings out even more of a competitor in Shohei. And obviously, it brought up a lot of excitement from the fans.' A two-run single from outfielder Andy Pages in seventh inning gave the Dodgers a 8-5 lead, a margin they never relinquished. The two teams next face each other on Saturday.

All paws on deck! Meet Royal Caribbean's 'chief dog officers'

Royal Caribbean International's next ship, Star of the Seas, is getting ever closer to its debut. And one of its most important crew members has sounded her first "woof." Sailor, a 3-month-old golden retriever, will be the ship's resident puppy and the cruise line's second "chief dog officer." The concept debuted with chief dog officer Rover on the Icon of the Seas, the first ship in the Icon class, as a way to bring a different element of joy and fun onboard for guests and crew members, said Kara Wallace, Royal Caribbean International's chief marketing officer. Rover has since become a cruise highlight for many young guests, and the two canines are social media celebrities, thanks in part to an Instagram page that has garnered more than 50,000 followers. Kara Wallace "We build big, iconic, bold ships with features that people can't really even dream up, but we don't let the small things go to waste," Wallace said. "There's always an opportunity to bring depth and richness to the experiences, and this is another way that we did it." Rover, and soon Sailor, don't have meet-and-greets or special schedules to interact with guests, making those interactions spontaneous and organic, Wallace said. She said the dogs are not mascots but crew members that might serve as a pet at sea for the human crew and similarly help young guests who might be missing their companions while on vacation. "That was the primary driver of it," Wallace said, "creating this home away from home." It's cruising cats and dogs Having animals on cruise ships isn't entirely novel but is certainly rare. Bug Naked, a hairless cat, could for years be found onboard Celebrity ships, Royal's sister line, thanks to Capt. Kate McCue, who brought Bug on as a companion in 2017. Like Rover, Bug became a ship celebrity and darling of the crew. Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 allows transatlantic guests to bring pets on as passengers via 24 kennels that are in high demand. But Royal's decision to bring animals onboard for guest and crew enjoyment is likely a first. It's a small offering compared to other projects Royal is investing in simultaneously, like building the tallest waterslides in North America and new private destinations across the world. But that attention to offering small details is a point of pride for Royal, Wallace said. Though Wallace said she thinks it's unlikely that guests will book cruises with Royal just because of Rover or Sailor, they are a differentiator. "I have colleagues here who have young kids, and they came back and all they could talk about was, 'We met Rover,'" she said. "It was an amazing ship that went to all these places, but it was one of the highlights of their cruise. … I think that that's a testament to the power of bringing this warm, family-oriented addition to round out that whole experience." Royal Caribbean International CEO Michael Bayley was the one to posit the idea of having a dog onboard, Wallace said. From there, the team explored the possibility with the American Humane Society, which has been its partner in the program ever since. There was plenty of planning involved, from choosing a breed to designing the dogs' accommodations and selecting a designated onboard caretaker. What started as one more way to enhance the guest and crew experience expanded into an opportunity to keep the Icon experience in guests' social media feeds every week, as they watch Sailor grow and Rover travel the world. On their Instagram page (@chiefdogofficers), you'll find a video of Sailor being lovingly cuddled and cooed at during her first visit to Royal Caribbean's corporate office as well as videos comically captioned in typical TikTok and Instagram form (in a recent post, a video of Sailor dozing off is accompanied by the text "How I sleep knowing I have a full-time job secured"). "We were just going to see what happens and see how people responded," Wallace said of the social media account. "I don't know that there was really an expectation in terms of, 'Oh, we're going to grow this to be a million followers.' That's not why we did this, but it's more kind of, 'How can we share Sailor and Rover with the world and let people see what we see?'"
