Harnessing Yoga to Manage Workplace Stress and Boost Performance

But then a switch inside her flipped, and things have never been better!
The switch
When Neha went home for the long weekend, she was coaxed by her grandparents into waking up early one day. Not to 'log in early', but to log into her inner being with a small Yoga session. She was cranky and tired, but who can say to Nani dearest?
And what was the show?
A pre-recorded episode from back in 2005, where Baba Ramdev was addressing thousands of people and helping them do Yoga by following him.
And 10 minutes into the morning telecast of the Yoga show, Neha felt a wave of ease over her. What started as a forceful activity turned into a daily habit. Over the next few weeks, she noticed small but important changes: feeling more energetic, better focus, and so much more positivity.
Yoga, as it turned out, gave her something she hadn't felt in a long time, which was control over her mind and body.
The growing workplace anxiety
Neha, being a journalist, had a desk job.
But even the constant influx of copies took a toll on her health. Dealing with crime news, writing about lay-offs, and whatnot had made her resent the work she did. And so naturally, she stayed distracted. And today, there are so many people who feel anxious without even realizing it. The signs show up quietly: fatigue, forgetfulness, body aches, or trouble sleeping. Left unchecked, this stress can lead to burnout, which affects both health and work performance.

And while therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes are all helpful, yoga offers something unique.
How Yoga and Pranayama help
Pranayam
Yoga offers a wide range of scientifically supported health benefits that improve both physical and mental well-being. Regular yoga practice enhances flexibility, strength, and balance, which are essential for maintaining mobility and reducing injury risk, especially as people age. It also promotes cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and improving lipid profiles, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease.
Yoga's combination of physical postures, breath control, and meditation helps reduce stress hormones like cortisol, alleviating anxiety and depression while improving mood and mental clarity. Additionally, yoga supports respiratory function and has been shown to improve symptoms in conditions such as asthma. By activating the body's relaxation response, yoga lowers heart rate and blood pressure, contributing to overall cardiovascular efficiency.
These holistic benefits make yoga a powerful tool for enhancing quality of life, managing chronic pain, and fostering long-term health.
Yoga naturally slows down the racing thoughts that come with anxiety. Certain poses, like the child's pose or the forward bend, bring a sense of calm and grounding, and when combined with deep breathing, they help release tension from the nervous system.,
In fact, years ago, Baba Ramdev had once said that 'Yoga is the light that once lit never burns out. The more you practice, the brighter it will light up the world inside and around you.'
Another way Yoga helps is that when most of us breathe shallowly, especially when we're stressed, Yoga abhyas makes us focus on slow, deep breathing.
It relaxes the body and helps with oxygen flow. And when work anxiety starts showing up on your body, it is the loudest alarm that can be rung to warn you of the negative effects ahead. And so even for things like tension in the shoulders, a stiff back, tightness in the neck, and the likes, there is a Yoga pose that will help.
BKS Iyengar famously said once, "
Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees.'
It has been about 10 months since Neha started watching and following along with Yoga tutorials. Be it Baba Ramdev's pre-recorded episodes, or the live YouTube follow-along videos by fitness influencers, she makes sure to spend time doing Yoga, taking her from burnout to optimised work.

Doing THIS for just 5 minutes daily can protect the heart! here's how
Your heart, along with the brain, is the most important organ of the body that pumps blood through your entire body. With age and poor eating habits, the heart sometimes begins to turn weak, and becomes inefficient, leading to blocked arteries that can result in a sudden heart attack. However, apart from diet and exercise, there are some other things you can do to protect your heart, out of which the Ganesh Mudra in Yoga has multiple benefits. Here is how... What is Ganesh Mudra Ganesh Mudra involves the practice of finger interlocking with a specific arrangement and elbow extension to form the hand position. You should perform this practice with deep breathing at chest height, to activate your heart zone, while energy flows from head to toe. The practice connects to the heart chakra (Anahata) that controls love and emotional balance and compassion. When you practice Ganesh Mudra consistently, you will break down mental and physical barriers to build inner power and endurance. How to Perform Ganesh Mudra Position yourself comfortably and join your hands in front of your chest by forming a prayer stance. Turn your hands so the fingertips face the opposite elbows. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Exclusive McAfee Discount Ends Soon McAfee Shop Now Undo The fingers should be linked near the heart center with the right palm directed toward the heart and left palm facing outward. Position your elbows wide to the sides while keeping them parallel to the floor. Breathe in deeply, and as you breathe out, attempt to separate your fingers while keeping them linked to feel the stretching effect. The tension should be slightly released when you inhale. The sequence should be performed six times before you reverse hand positions, to repeat the exercise another six times. Benefits for Heart Health Your heart experiences both physical and energetic benefits through Ganesh Mudra practice: The heart muscle gains strength from the gentle finger resistance you create by separating your hands, because it activates and strengthens the heart and chest muscles. The stretch enhances blood circulation which improves heart and lung efficiency, thus delivering better oxygenation to your body and easier breathing. The practice of Ganesh Mudra unclogs energy flow in the heart chakra, thus creating emotional freedom alongside increased affection and sympathy. Through its ability to stimulate the fire element in your body, Ganesh Mudra increases digestion and energy production which are important elements for maintaining heart health. Benefits for Anxiety and Stress Anxiety develops from physical tension which blocks the flow of energy in the heart and chest region. Ganesh Mudra provides several ways to address these conditions: The physical movement and slow breathing technique of Ganesh Mudra works to reduce stress while releasing tension from the chest and lungs, which normally intensify anxiety symptoms. The practice of this mudra activates inner strength which increases your confidence levels and mental courage, to tackle challenges peacefully. Regular practice of this mudra brings positive emotional effects by clearing out sadness and depressive thoughts, as well as negative feelings. Some other benefits Ganesh Mudra removes toxic substances while enhancing lung and chest capabilities, which benefits patients with asthma. The mudra also enhances chest muscles, as well as shoulder and arm and neck muscles to improve posture and minimize spondylitis and neck pain. The practice of Ganesh Mudra activates Manipura (solar plexus) chakra to enhance digestive juice secretion and metabolic function while stimulating the fire element. The practice leads to improved mental confidence and focus, which develops inner strength and courage, while enhancing mental clarity to handle challenging situations with composure. Relieves Pain and Tension: Through regular practice one can obtain relief from chest and shoulder pain, and minimise muscle tension which leads to complete physical comfort and relaxation. Regular practice brings mood improvement, reduces sadness and negative thoughts and depressive feelings, while it fosters peace and self-love. How Often and When to Practice The Ganesh Mudra provides its best results when practiced daily for 5-10 minutes, as a meditation or pranayama companion. The stretches should be repeated six times on each side.

Constipated In Monsoon? Try These Four Yoga Poses For Relief
Last Updated: Many root causes of constipation---poor diet, inadequate physical activity, and stress---can be addressed through Yoga practices and a yogic lifestyle It's the monsoon season—a time when 'incomplete evacuation" is common. Constipation often peaks in this season along with other digestion issues as the damp and humid weather contributes to the proliferation of infection-causing organisms. But it's also about the fire within. 'All that excessive intake of water during summer months has dampened our agni (digestive fire)," explains Delhi-based Ayurvedacharya Vd. Purnima Midha. 'With a dampened agni, digesting even your normal diet can be difficult. Eating light is the only way out," she adds. Easier said than done, of course. We continue eating as usual and when constipation strikes, we reach for our laxative pills. But, for sustained relief, lifestyle changes are your best bet. Many root causes of constipation—poor diet, inadequate physical activity, and stress—can be addressed through Yoga practices and a yogic lifestyle. Here are some Yoga poses for digestive health that you can incorporate into your routine. Practise them regularly, but take care not to overdo them to the point of fatigue or strain on internal organs. The pose improves blood flow to the digestive organs and stimulates them gently. It can also be practised after meals, to boost digestion and gradually relieve constipation. Sit on your mat (or a firm mattress) and come into the kneeling position. Join both feet behind at the toes. Slowly lower the body to sit in the hollow formed by the heels. Ensure the back is straight, thighs and knees are together, and shoulders are relaxed. Place palms on the thighs, close to the knees. Breathe normally and observe your breathing. Sit in this position for a few minutes daily, gradually increasing the duration to 10 minutes. If uncomfortable, use a folded bedsheet to cushion the feet. (Note: Those with arthritis or depression should proceed with caution.) HASTAPADASANA—STANDING FORWARD BEND A beginner-friendly pose, this helps achieve a deep compression of the abdomen. How to do it: Stand on your mat with legs together or slightly apart. Raise your arms upwards. Inhaling, bend slightly backward. Exhaling, bend the body down, avoiding strain. The bend should come at the groin, not the waist. Bend till you reach the toes. Try to hold your ankles Maintain the pose with head down and suspend the breath for a few seconds. Inhaling, return to starting position. Do 3-4 rounds. PAVANMUKTASANA – WIND-RELIEVING POSE An easy pose, it puts pressure on the abdomen and massages the intestines to promote peristalsis. Relieves gas and constipation effectively. How to do it: Lie on your back, feet together, hands resting beside the body. Exhaling, draw the right knee toward the chest and clasp it with both hands just below the knee. Press firmly. Keep the head and neck relaxed on the floor, and the other leg straight. Maintain this pose for a few seconds with breath suspended or normal breathing. Inhaling, release the hands and straighten the leg. Repeat with the left leg. Do 3 rounds each. Follow this with the next variation: lift both legs together, clasp the knees of both with both hands while exhaling, and release while inhaling. HALASANA—THE PLOUGH POSE An advanced Yoga pose, Halasana provides inverted deep abdominal compression. It promotes bowel movement, increases blood flow, and activates the intestines. How to do it: Lie on your back, with arms resting at the sides, palms facing downwards. Inhaling, raise both legs to a 90-degree angle. Exhaling, lift the hips with support of your hands, and slowly lower the legs behind the head. Keep the legs straight, and together. Bend the spine gradually as the legs go down. Once they touch the floor, ensure the toes are pointed outward and as far away from the body as possible. Release by slowly bringing the legs back to perpendicular, and then back to the ground. Do 5 rounds. (Note: Avoid if pregnant, or if you have heart conditions, high blood pressure, ulcers, respiratory disorders, neck injury, or during first three days of menstruation.) PRANAYAMA & RELAXATION TECHNIQUES Add Pranayama (yogic breathing) and conscious relaxation techniques into your routine. These are highly effective in countering stress—a major contributor to constipation. Finally, avoid frequent intake of heavy foods. Drink warm fluids. Eat at larger intervals and opt for more fruits, milk, khichdi, and semolina-based easily-digestible dishes, says Vd. Purnima Midha. These simple adjustments should help you ease most monsoon-related digestive discomfort. top videos View all (Note: This article is for information purposes only.
