Driver trapped, burnt to death after timber lorry crash in Bintulu as vehicle bursts into flames
SIBU, June 9 — A timber lorry driver was burned to death when his lorry caught fire after it crashed along a timber trail in Samarakan, Bintulu yesterday.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre, a call about the crash was received at 1 pm and a team from the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Station was mobilised to the location near Medsum Trading Sdn Bhd, Samarakan, Bintulu.
The victim was identified as Kanang Inggai, aged 57.
'The front end of the lorry was totally burned. The victim was trapped and found burned. The fire had been put out by company workers.
'The firefighters managed to extricate the body at 2.49 pm,' the centre said in a statement today. — Bernama

Satiful Bahri also extended his condolences on behalf of the state government to the families affected by the tragedy, which has claimed the lives of 15 students, many of them from Terengganu, who were on their way back to campus after the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays. 'They passed away on a noble journey, returning in pursuit of knowledge with sincere intentions. Their loss is deeply felt by their families, the community and the state. 'We call on the people of Terengganu and Malaysians at large to join us in praying that the souls of those who perished will be showered with mercy and placed among the martyrs and the righteous,' he said. He also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and strength for the families affected by the tragedy. Earlier this morning, the Hulu Perak Civil Defence Force confirmed in a statement that at least 15 people were killed when a bus carrying UPSI students collided with another vehicle on the East–West Highway in Banun, near Tasik Banding, approximately 57 kilometres from Gerik, Perak. UPSI confirms 42 students involved in fatal Gerik bus crash, pledges support to victims' families
IPOH, June 9 — Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) has confirmed that 42 of its students were on board the bus involved in the fatal collision with another vehicle along the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, early this morning. The accident claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students. The UPSI Corporate Communication Division, when contacted, said that 44 students were supposed to board the bus, but two of them did not. It later issued a statement saying that it had received a preliminary report on the crash. 'UPSI is taking follow-up action on the matter. As such, we ask the UPSI staff and the public to pray that we be granted ease in our affairs,' it added. It also stressed that UPSI is always concerned with the welfare of its students and will provide assistance and support to the next-of-kin of the crash victims. The Corporate Communication Division added that UPSI has activated an operations room and any information can be channelled to it by contacting 05-450 7148 (office) or 019-571 9977 (hotline). Meanwhile, seven of the crash victims are treated in the red zone, 20 in the yellow zone and six in the green zone of Gerik Hospital. KOTA BARU, June 9 — A last-minute change of plans saved one Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) student from a nightmare bus ride that has claimed the lives of 15 people today. Alia, a first-year student, had returned to her hometown but decided to travel back to UPSI last Thursday and celebrate Aidiladha on campus due to personal reasons, Berita Harian reported. 'I was supposed to celebrate Aidiladha in Setiu, Terengganu, and return to campus on that bus last night, but I changed my plans and went back to Sultan Idris Education University earlier instead. 'Then at around 3am today, I was shocked to hear that the bus carrying UPSI students – which I was supposed to be on – was involved in a crash that killed 15 people,' she was quoted as saying. She said that she received a barrage of calls from people who thought she was on the bus. She was further taken aback to find out that her name was listed among the bus passengers involved in the 1am accident on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Perak. 'I was stunned and speechless when I found out my friends were involved in the crash. 'In fact, many people thought I was on that bus because my name was there,' she told the Malay newspaper. She said all the victims onboard were from Besut and Setiu in Terengganu. A bus carrying UPSI students and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) collided on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early this morning, killing 15 people and injuring others. The Civil Defence Force had earlier confirmed the collision involved a total of 48 people. Several crash victims have been rushed to Gerik Hospital for treatment.
