Glowing white light with pill-shaped center in the sky alarms Upstate New York residents. Here's what the object was
'In the Northern sky, opposite the moon… Not a meteor, planets or Starlink and Yes it was moving but silent,' a Facebook user wrote, sharing a photo of the light. 'Finger Lakes Region of NY State (Cayuga and Seneca Lakes location)'.
Facebook users took to the comment section to react to the photo, with one saying, 'I live about four hours from the launch site and it does not look like this, and it winks out when it reaches a certain altitude. This looks very different from what we see on the regular in Florida.' 'What could it be? Weird things happening these times,' one user wrote, while another said, 'OMG I SAW THIS! I was on The phone with my daughter and freaked out, IM IN KANSAS'. 'Saw this in Warren OH also! It was above us for a few minutes not moving. I looked away for a few seconds and all of a sudden it was heading North and disappeared in a matter of seconds,' one said.

'Does anyone else pay attention to the sky every night? We see UAP's of many kinds, at many altitudes, every night. Some are stationary, some move quickly, some disappear and then reappear and some travel back and forth (sometimes in a zig-zag pattern). I can find no explanation for these things. We often see what looks like red, green and blue lights in a triangular pattern, but light at a distance can appear colored. What's everyone's take on these?' one user wrote. 'Yes we saw this too in MA!! We thought it was an alien abduction,' another said.
What exactly was the object?
The light seen in the sky was actually the tail and plume of a Vulcan Centaur rocket launched from Cape Canaveral by the United Launch Alliance, per Space.com. Vulcan took off with four side-mounted solid rocket boosters and ended up sending its three million-pound payload into geosynchronous orbit. According to ULA, the launch sent an experimental navigation satellite to orbit each on behalf of the US Space Force.

The company stated in a release, 'The Air Force Research Laboratory's NTS-3 satellite will test critical technologies designed to defeat the 21st century threats that contested, degraded and denied position, navigation and timing poses to our national security.'
This launch was reportedly one of the longest treks ever executed by the company. It took more than seven hours to execute.

Rocket launch in Florida: SpaceX Falcon 9 sends Starlink to orbit as Donald Trump pushes deregulation for space industry
SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Thursday morning, delivering another batch of Starlink satellites to orbit. The flight is the booster's 10th mission and came shortly after a White House order aimed at streamlining regulations for commercial space launches. Thursday Morning liftoff and booster landing Liftoff occurred at 8:29 a.m. from Launch Complex 40, with favorable weather conditions reported by the 45th Weather Squadron. About eight minutes after launch, the first-stage booster landed on the Just Read the Instructions drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean, completing its 10th flight. The booster has previously supported three Starlink missions, Crew-9, RRT-1, Firefly Blue Ghost Mission 1, Fram2, SXM-10, and MTG-S1. The launch was SpaceX's second in less than 10 hours, following a Starlink mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California earlier the same morning. Artemis II will launch on its mission around the Moon in early 2026. The crew is training, the rocket is stacking, and all the pieces are coming experts will be on @Reddit to take your @NASAArtemis questions on Aug. 14 at 1pm ET (1700 UTC): Countdown timeline and preparations Final preparations began 38 minutes before liftoff when the launch director gave the 'go' for propellant load. Rocket-grade kerosene and liquid oxygen loading began for the first stage, followed by second-stage fueling 16 minutes before launch. Engine chill began at T-minus seven minutes, and final prelaunch checks occurred in the last minute before ignition. Brevard County Emergency Management activated its launch operations support team ahead of the mission, and fueling was underway by 8:00 a.m. without any delays. 8/14/2025 5:50 AM | We have activated our launch operations support team in preparation for the SpaceX Falcon9 launch. Window: 6:47 AM - 10:47 AM New White House order on commercial space rules The launch took place against the backdrop of a policy change in Washington. On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. Department of Transportation to remove outdated and overly restrictive regulations for launch and reentry vehicles. The order also calls for reducing lengthy environmental reviews, which have previously delayed some missions. While SpaceX was not mentioned by name, the policy is expected to benefit companies like it, along with other private space firms such as Blue Origin. MAKE SPACE GREAT AGAIN 🇺🇸🚀@POTUS has signed an Executive Order to streamline regulations and foster a competitive commercial space industry, ensuring the United States maintains its leading role in the commercial use of space. 'It is imperative that we build on the far-reaching actions taken by my Administration during my first term to ensure that new space-based industries, space exploration capabilities, and cutting-edge defense systems are pioneered in America,' the statement from the White House read. Busy week for SpaceX Alongside Thursday's launch, SpaceX is preparing for its next Starship test flight in Texas, unveiling a new design with larger grid fins to improve booster landings. NASA's Artemis II crew, targeting a February 2026 launch around the Moon, also continued training this week at Kennedy Space Center. The morning liftoff added to a packed schedule for SpaceX, underscoring both its rapid launch pace and the potential impact of the new U.S. regulatory approach on future missions. This is an important milestone for the Space Force and all involved,' said Col. Jim Horne, USSF-106 mission director, , as stated in the US Space Force press release released by the Space Systems Command. The USSF is leveraging the newly certified Vulcan Centaur rocket to deliver demonstrations and experiments to geosynchronous orbit on behalf of Department of Defense customers. The mission's primary experiment, Navigation Technology Satellite-3, is an Air Force Vanguard project led by the Air Force Research Laboratory and built by L3Harris Technologies. The payload includes a secondary adapter demonstrating resilient satellite navigation through reprogrammable signals, an electronically steerable antenna, and advanced timekeeping algorithms. The bright, cloud-like spirals and shimmering shapes led some to speculate about unidentified flying objects before officials confirmed the source as the classified USSF-106 mission. "Rocket launch? During my search for meteor showers on the Island's North Shore, this appeared, and it crossed the Long Island Sound. It lasted several minutes. When I noticed it, I believed it was a rocket that was launched from Florida, but I did not know for sure. I found out later that it was a rocket," said Don Manchester of Long Island. The timing coincided with the Perseid meteor showers, amplifying the visual spectacle for many viewers. National security significance of Vulcan program United Launch Alliance President and CEO Tory Bruno described Vulcan as 'a catalyst to supporting national defense in the strategic warfighting domain of space.' He added, 'Vulcan is the world's most capable, high energy orbit rocket meeting the demand for expanding space competencies.
