Nationwide general strike: Coal mining operations hit in SCCL mines; TGSRTC bus services disrupted in Khammam district
About 85% of the total men on rolls during the first shift abstained from work impacting coal production in the SCCL's coal mines across 11 Areas spanning six districts in Telangana's coal belt, sources said.
Coal output dropped significantly during the first and second shifts even as the JAC of Singareni trade unions claimed the strike as a resounding success.
Workers owing allegiance to the JAC of Singareni trade unions, barring the BMS-affiliated Singareni Coal Mines Karmika Sangh, observed the day-long strike.
Formation of human chains, dharnas and rallies marked the protest programmes organized by the JAC of trade unions in Godavarikhani, Mandamarri, Kothagudem and elsewhere in the coal belt.
Members of the AITUC-affiliated Singareni Collieries Workers' Union, which is the SCCL's recognized union, the INTUC, the CITU-affiliated Singareni Collieries Employees' Union, Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS) and various other unions took part in different protest programmes.
In Khammam district, TGSRTC bus services were crippled by the day-long nationwide strike.
Members of the trade unions affiliated to Left parties took out a massive rally in Khammam during the general strike.
The demonstrators raised slogans demanding the repeal of the Centre's four labour codes terming them as most detrimental to the interests of the working class. They vowed to defend the hard-won labour rights.
CPI (M) Central Committee member Tammineni Veerabhadram, CPI State secretariat member B Hemanth Rao and others led the rally.
A tractor rally was organised by the CPI-affiliated Telangana Rythu Sangham in Khammam in support of the general strike.
The strike evoked mixed response in the erstwhile Karimnagar and Adilabad districts.

Intense jostling ahead of CPI state secretary polls
CHENNAI: The 26th state conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI) commenced in Salem on Friday in the presence of party national general secretary D Raja and state secretary R Mutharasan. The four-day conference will conclude on August 18 with the election of a new state secretary, a post that carries considerable weight in steering the party's strategy in Tamil Nadu. As per party rules, a state secretary can serve only three consecutive three-year terms. Mutharasan, who has held the post since 2015, has already completed three terms, with his latest election in 2022 delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. He has, therefore, been at the helm for nearly a decade. Though his tenure technically ends now, a section of senior leaders indicated that a precedent exists for a fourth term. They pointed out that after a 2002 amendment to the party constitution, veteran leader R Nallakannu was elected to a fourth consecutive term as state secretary. 'If the same principle applies, Mutharasan may once again be in the race. That is why there appears to be less visible competition among senior leaders,' a functionary told TNIE on condition of anonymity.

Modi distorting history, alleges Ramakrishna
Rajamahendravaram: CPI state secretary KRamakrishna accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of distorting Indian history by ignoring the Indian National Congress and Communists' role in the fight against British colonial rule. Addressing the media here on Saturday, he criticised Modi for spreading falsehoods about the RSS, which initially rejected the national flag and Dr BRAmbedkar's Constitution post-independence. Ramakrishna alleged the BJP still lacks faith in the Constitution, citing Modi's earlier remarks about amending it if the party won 400 Lok Sabha seats. He noted the BJP's recent electoral setback forced it to form a coalition with parties like the TDP. Ramakrishna questioned Modi's claim of reducing poverty by 25 per cent, asking why free rice distribution continues for millions if poverty has declined. He accused the Modi government of favoring industrialists like Adani and Ambani through its policies. On the Polavaram Project, Ramakrishna alleged collusion between the central and state governments to deceive the poor. He claimed the Modi government's policies harm project evacuees, with plans to reduce the dam's height to lower compensation, potentially turning it into a barrage. He highlighted the plight of tribal communities in submerged areas, enduring floodwaters for three months called the state-promoted Banakacherla project a 'hoax,' warning against private control of irrigation projects. He questioned the feasibility of its ₹2 lakh crore cost, with Rs 1 lakh crore from private sources. While supporting the free bus scheme, he stressed the need for 3,000 more buses and 10,000 staff for effective implementation. The CPI demanded land allocation and Rs 5 lakh for home construction for the alleged EVM misuse aided Modi's rise and announced a national CPI meeting in Chandigarh to counter the 'autocratic policies' of both governments. CPI leaders KVVPrasad, Tatipaka Madhu, KRambabu, and V. Kondal Rao attended the press conference.
