Previously, the media reported that BAM had offered Iskandar Zulkarnain a spot in the national coaching set-up.
The matter was confirmed by Iskandar Zulkarnain himself, although he had not yet known the position he would be taking up.
For the record, Iskandar Zulkarnain, who was runner-up at the 2016 Malaysia Masters, began serving as a full-time coach for Ireland's badminton squad in 2022 and successfully guided men's singles player Nhat Nguyen to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Prior to that, he had been a training partner to Nguyen in preparation for major tournaments.
Meanwhile, BAM Singles Coaching Director Kenneth Jonassen expressed confidence in Iskandar's ability to steer the development of women's singles.
'We are pleased to welcome Iskandar back to BAM in this important role. His international coaching stint, combined with his background as a national player, brings a valuable blend of experience and perspective.

The Deputy Home Minister, who is also Lenggong MP, said the Rimba Raid X Lenggong event, held for the second time, indirectly supports the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign through international media coverage and the participation of riders from various countries. 'Rimba Raid X Lenggong features participants from Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Thailand, several European countries, and the host nation, Malaysia. 'These participants indirectly serve as 'tourism ambassadors', helping to promote Malaysia as a sports tourism destination to the world,' he told Bernama after the 2025 Rimba Raid X Lenggong prize-giving ceremony here on Sunday night. Also present was Rimba Raid founder Capt Datuk Nik Huzlan Nik Hussain. The 2025 Rimba Raid X Lenggong features six racing categories, offering opportunities for participants with different types of motorcycles and varying levels of experience. The categories include Class A for multi-cylinder motorcycles over 1,000cc; Class B for multi-cylinder motorcycles between 250cc and 999cc; Class C for single-cylinder motorcycles between 250cc and 800cc; and Class D (adventure kapcai), dedicated to small-engine motorcycles modified for rugged adventure use. The remaining two are Class E for adventure scooters – a genre growing in popularity among urban riders and light adventurers – and Class F for electric motorcycles (e-bikes), reflecting advancements in technology and sustainability in motorsports. Meanwhile, Nik Huzlan said the competition results, originally scheduled to be announced on Sunday night, had to be postponed due to technical issues, and a new date will be set soon.

Tze Yong to undergo surgery in Doha
KUALA LUMPUR: Injured men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong (pic) is set to undergo knee surgery in Doha, Qatar. Tze Yong tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while competing in the Malaysian Masters last month and needs to go under the knife. 'We have agreed to send Tze Yong to Doha to undergo surgery for his ACL,' said BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'The National Sports Institute (NSI) are arranging the dates for his surgery. 'We should know when he will be going in two to three days.' Tze Yong could take up to a year to fully recover and return to competitions after the surgery. Earlier, former internationals Datuk Lee Chong Wei (singles) and Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles) had suggested for Tze Yong to look at the option of going abroad instead of seeking treatment locally. Singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen had also stated that he was open to his charge going overseas for surgery. Tze Yong only returned to competitions in April after a year out following two back surgeries. The 25-year-old, who is currently ranked No. 125 in the world, only competed in three tournaments before injuring his knee in the Malaysian Masters first-round match against Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long.

Iskandar agrees to return home as singles coach with BAM
KUALA LUMPUR: Former shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin is set to strengthen the singles coaching set-up in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). BAM have persuaded Iskandar to leave his current position as Ireland coach. 'We have appointed Iskandar to strengthen our singles coaching team. He will join on Oct 1,' said BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh. 'We have had negotiations for a while with him and he finally agreed to our terms and conditions last week. 'It's up to singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen whether he guides the women's or men's singles.' BAM had been on the lookout for a replacement for women's singles coach Jeffer Rosobin since the Indonesian resigned at the end of February. Iskandar had confirmed in May that BAM approached him with a coaching offer. The 33-year-old, who started coaching in Ireland four years ago, has steadily made a name for himself in Europe. Iskandar has been instrumental in the rise of men's singles player Nhat Nguyen, who is now ranked No. 31 in the world, and has helped elevate the profile of Irish badminton. Under his guidance, Ireland qualified two players for the Paris Olympics last August, namely Nguyen and women's singles shuttler Rachael Darragh, marking a major milestone for the country. Iskandar first joined Ireland as a sparring partner for Nguyen during his preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He was later appointed as Nguyen's full-time coach and eventually took over the entire singles programme. Nguyen came close to realising Iskandar's dream of winning a European medal this year, reaching the quarter-finals in Horsens, Denmark, before losing to France's Alex Lanier. In the Malaysian Masters in May, Iskandar guided Nguyen to a win over homester Leong Jun Hao in the first round. The Irish player also stunned independent player and Paris Games bronze medallist Lee Zii Jia at the Orleans Masters in March.
