40,000 pounds of merchandise spilled on Detroit freeway after semi driver flips trailer on ramp

DETROIT (FOX 2) - While cleaning up a flipped semi-truck trailer Wednesday morning in Detroit, the truck's load spilled across a ramp. According to Michigan State Police, a 26-year-old truck driver from Canada was traveling too fast on the ramp from westbound I-94 to eastbound I-96 when the products he was hauling shifted, and the trailer flipped over around 2:15 a.m. While tow crews were trying to upright the trailer, one side of the trailer wall broke open, spilling about 40,000 pounds of merchandise. Authorities did not specify the type of merchandise dumped. Police said the mess had to be picked up by hand. The freeway reopened around 10:30 a.m. "Driving too fast resulted in another preventable crash," said MSP F/Lt. Mike Shaw. "While no one was hurt and no other vehicles were involved, we will see the effects of this crash on travel for hours. This driver's risky driving behaviors resulted in traffic headaches for everyone who uses that freeway ramp." Dig deeper This is the second semi crash that resulted from speed on Detroit freeways in under 24 hours. On Tuesday afternoon, police said a truck driver going too fast on wet roads lost control on southbound I-75 at Michigan Avenue, hit the wall, and jack-knifed under the overpass. National Guard vehicle collides with civilian car near US Capitol, trapping one person

Trump District of Columbia WASHINGTON (AP) — A National Guard vehicle collided with a civilian car less than a mile from the U.S. Capitol on Thursday morning as troops continued to take up positions around the city during President Donald Trump's crackdown. One person was trapped inside the car after the accident and had to be extricated by emergency responders, according to D.C. fire department spokesman Vito Maggiolo. The person was transported to a hospital with minor injuries. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. A video posted online showed a tan-colored armored vehicle and a silver SUV with a crushed side. The military vehicle was twice the height of the civilian car. 'You come to our city and this is what you do? Seriously?' a woman yelled at the troops in the video. The driver was conscious and breathing, and the injuries were not considered life threatening, police said. An estimated 1,900 troops are being deployed in D.C. More than half are coming from Republican-led states that are responding to requests from Trump administration officials. Attorney General Pam Bondi said more than 550 people have been arrested so far, and the U.S. Marshals are offering $500 rewards for information leading to additional arrests. "Together, we will make DC safe again!" Bondi wrote on social media. Solve the daily Crossword
