Madras HC reserves order on NEET-UG retest plea over power outage, refuses to extend stay on releasing results
CHENNAI: The Madras HC on Tuesday reserved orders on the petitions filed by the candidates appearing for the NEET-UG examination at three centres in the city and its suburbs seeking retest as they were allegedly affected by the power outage caused by sudden storm and heavy rains.
Justice C Kumarappan, before whom the petitions came up for hearing, refused to extend the interim stay, granted already by the court, on the release of the results. As a result, there is no legal bar on publishing the results which was scheduled for June 14.
The petitions were filed by some of the candidates who appeared for the examination at the Kendriya Vidyalaya at Avadi, Government Higher Secondary School in Kundrathur and Padma Seshadri School in KK Nagar.
Additional Solicitor General (ASG) ARL Sundaresan, appearing for the Centre, filed a report on behalf of the National Testing Agency (NTA), saying inquiries revealed that a brief power outage was caused by sudden natural storm and rain in the respective places, but the power supply was restored quickly.
During this period, there was sufficient natural daylight in the classrooms; no contemporaneous complaint or representation was raised by any of the candidates including the petitioners regarding lighting or adverse conditions. Neither the centre superintendent nor any observers or invigilators recommended for compensatory time or reported any procedural irregularity; the examination was conducted strictly as per the NTA protocols, the ASG stated.
He also informed the court that an independent committee of statisticians was constituted to carry out an analysis of the performance of the centre and the students. The committee found no abnormal variation or decline in the number of attempted questions that would suggest disruption or disadvantage.

Government to map NEETs by age in labour survey for targeted skilling push
This is an AI-generated image, used for representational purposes only. NEW DELHI: The Government is planning to track NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) youth by age in the labour survey for smarter skilling policies. The ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE) has successfully pushed for the inclusion of age-disaggregated NEET data in India's flagship labour survey — the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). Starting July 2025, the revamped survey will include new questions to better identify and support India's disengaged youth and adult populations. Responding to the recommendations of Jayant Chaudhary, minister of state (independent charge) for skill development and entrepreneurship, ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) confirmed that new PLFS rounds will include two questions: one to track whether individuals are undergoing any training, and another to record education or training attendance for the entire 0–59 age group. 'We need to know who the NEETs are—not just in absolute numbers, but in terms of age brackets, vulnerability, and skill needs,' Chaudhary wrote in a letter dated February 5 to MoSPI. While the term "NEET" has long been used to describe those slipping through the cracks of the education and employment systems, it has rarely been dissected beyond a general statistic. This is seen as crucial for how India plans, executes, and evaluates its skilling strategies. Responding to his Chaudhary's request, Rao Inderjit Singh, minister of state (independent charge), MoSPI confirmed on May 19 that new PLFS rounds will include two questions: one to track whether individuals are undergoing any training, and another to record education or training attendance for the entire 0–59 age group. The design was cleared after consultation with expert committees and MSDE to ensure methodological consistency. According to a senior MSDE official, the reform aligns with SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth and is critical for initiatives like Skill India Digital Hub and Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programmes. Even a 1% shift in NEET status impacts over 2.6 million youth, and now, India is set to know exactly who and where they are.

SC allows NBE to reschedule NEET PG 2025 exam to August 3
New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday granted the National Board of Examinations (NBE) permission to reschedule the NEET PG 2025 exam to August 3, 2025. The exam was initially set for June 15, 2025. While granting the extension, a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih made it clear that no further postponements would be allowed. The court emphasised that the decision to reschedule the exam was bona fide and necessary to ensure a smooth examination. 'We are satisfied that the prayer for extension of time is bona fide. Accordingly, the time allowed by our dated May 30, for holding the examination is extended', the Court said in its order. On May 30, the Supreme Court ordered the NEET PG examination to be held only in a single shift. Subsequently, the NBE moved an application in the top court seeking an extension of time to reschedule the examination later, as fresh arrangements would have to be made to comply with the single-shift order. The bench rejected NBE's decision to hold the exam in two shifts, saying it created 'arbitrariness.' The bench also stated that NBE could apply for an extension of time if they find that the arrangements cannot be made by 15 June, the scheduled date of the exam. During today's hearing, counsels appearing for the NBE and the Centre stated that fresh steps need to be taken to make arrangements for holding the exam in a single shift. The NBE requested the postponement due to logistical challenges in complying with the court's directive to hold the exam in a single shift. With over 250,000 candidates and limited exam centers - 450 centres, the NBE argued that additional time was needed to increase the number of exam centers, ensure security arrangements and allow candidates to choose their preferred exam centers. He further argued that time is needed to give opportunities to the candidates to choose centres according to their locations, now that the examination is being held in a single shift. (ANI)

SC allows NBE to reschedule NEET-PG 2025 exam to August 3
New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday granted extension to the National Board of Examination (NBE) for holding the NEET-PG examination on August 3, 2025. The exam was initially scheduled to be held on June 15 this year. A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih clarified that no further extension will be granted to NBE in this regard. 'We are satisfied that the prayer for extension of time is bona fide. Accordingly, the time allowed by our dated May 30, for holding the examination is extended', the Court said in its order. On May 30, the Supreme Court ordered that the NEET PG examination be held only in a single shift. Subsequently, the NBE moved an application in the top court seeking an extension of time to reschedule the examination on a later date, as fresh arrangements would have to be made to comply with the single-shift order. The bench had rejected the decision of NBE to hold the exam in two shifts, saying it creates 'arbitrariness'. The bench had also stated that it will be open for NBE to apply for extension of time if they find that the arrangements can't be done by 15 June, the scheduled date of the exam. During the hearing today, counsels appearing for the NBE and the Centre stated that fresh steps need to be taken to make arrangements for holding the exam in a single shift. 'The total strength of candidates appearing for the exam is two lakhs 50 thousand, and there are only 450 centres. So we need to ensure that more centres are made available and security parameters are put in place,' the counsel argued. He further argued that time is needed for giving opportunities to the candidates to choose centres according to their locations, now that the examination is being held in a single shift. After hearing the submissions, the Court allowed the NBE to conduct the examination on an extended time of August 3. (ANI)
