Serbian PM calls trade deal a ‘new page' in Egypt ties

Daily News Egypt12 hours ago

Serbian Prime Minister Guro Macut has described a new free trade agreement with Egypt as a 'new page' in bilateral relations, stating that both countries are working to implement its terms to boost trade and investment.
Speaking at the Egyptian-Serbian Business Forum in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, Macut said the agreement aims to 'achieve the optimal exploitation of possible opportunities to increase trade exchange and push investments' for the economic growth of both nations.
He said the efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation have become tangible thanks to the support of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, which paves the way for stronger ties.
Macut highlighted the long-standing ties between the two nations, which he noted were founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement and are celebrating 117 years of diplomatic relations. He said the strategic partnership was established during Sisi's 2022 visit to Belgrade and reaffirmed when the draft free trade deal was signed during Vučić's visit to Cairo in July 2024.
While noting that economic exchange currently stands at approximately $122m, the prime minister asserted that there is potential to increase it significantly. He added that around 40 Egyptian-owned companies operate in Serbia and that joint manufacturing projects have already begun in the Egyptian market.
He presented Serbia as an economically stable and safe investment destination, citing its strategic geographical location, government support, skilled workforce, and attractiveness for the software industry. Macut also mentioned Serbia's efforts to advance the 'Open Balkan' initiative to create a common market for the free movement of goods in the Western Balkans.
Macut extended a specific invitation for Egyptian participation in the Belgrade Expo 2027, encouraging a large number of investors to attend to explore cooperation opportunities and create a platform to enhance trade. He also expressed hope that Serbian companies and products would find their place in the Egyptian market.
'We look forward to a new partnership and more cooperation,' he concluded.

OPEN// FM warns against Israel-Iran escalation, urges Gaza ceasefire in talks with Irish counterpart

CAIRO, June 17 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty warned on Tuesday of the grave risks posed by the continued military escalation between Israel and Iran, saying it could severely undermine regional security and stability. In a phone call with Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign and Defense Minister Simon Harris, the two sides discussed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, as well as the broader implications of the ongoing escalation between Israel and Iran. Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's intensified efforts to restore a ceasefire in Gaza, secure the release of captives and detainees, and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to alleviate suffering in the enclave. He reaffirmed Egypt's complete rejection of what he called Israel's policy of starvation and collective punishment, describing it as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law. He also condemned Israeli military operations in the West Bank and ongoing incursions by Israeli settlers. The top Egyptian diplomat praised Ireland's principled stance on the Palestinian cause, stressing the urgent need to revive a political horizon that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on a two-state solution, and guarantees the Palestinian people's right to self-determination. Abdelatty expressed hope that other European countries would follow Ireland in recognizing the State of Palestine, describing such recognition as a cornerstone for achieving peace in the Middle East. The ministers also discussed rapid developments in the region and Abdelatty emphasized that there is no alternative to political and diplomatic solutions, warning that military force would only further inflame the regional situation. He stressed the importance of de-escalation, a ceasefire, and resumption of negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. Both ministers agreed that the ongoing military escalation in the region must not distract from the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank, and called for intensified efforts to swiftly re-establish a ceasefire and ease the humanitarian crisis facing the Palestinian people. OPEN// Egypt continues historical role as pillar of regional stability and balance, Arab experts tell MENA

CAIRO, June 17 (MENA) – Egypt continues to play its historical role as a cornerstone of stability and a pillar of balance in the region, relying on calm and effective diplomacy aimed at defusing crises and containing conflicts before they erupt, Arab experts said. Cairo is increasingly emerging as a trusted mediator for all parties; drawing upon its long-standing experience and well-balanced international relations, the experts told MENA. In recent years, Egyptian diplomacy has adopted an approach of direct engagement, intensifying mediation efforts and launching real settlement initiatives that take into account the sensitivities of conflicting parties without bias or recklessness, they said. Mohsen Al-Shobaki, a Jordanian political and strategic expert, said the joint statement by Arab and Islamic countries regarding Israeli attacks on Iran, which was initiated by Egypt, reflects a decline in regional trust in Israel's unilateral actions and highlights the extent of unconditional Western support for Israel—often at the expense of other regional allies. Shobaki emphasized that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Egypt's leadership fully understand the seriousness of the current stage in the Middle East, as escalating tensions are being driven by extremist Israeli policies—not limited to Gaza, but extending to military and civilian targets in Iran. Dr. Ola Shahoud, professor of international relations at the Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow, said that amid the rising tensions between Iran and Israel, Egypt stands out as a responsible regional actor seeking to avert catastrophe in the Middle East. Cairo's actions are guided by a strategic vision grounded in a long history of active regional engagement and balanced diplomacy, she added. She praised Egypt's efforts, which culminated in the joint statement that underscored the need to rid the Middle East of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, in line with relevant international resolutions, and the immediate accession of all regional states to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Dr. Areej Jaber, a professor of political science in Jordan, said the latest developments in the Middle East point to a rapid slide into unprecedented regional escalation, with Israel expanding its military reach into confrontations with sovereign states, primarily Iran—seeking what it views as a 'historic opportunity' to reshape the Middle East. Egypt has emerged as a rational and stabilizing regional actor, reasserting its leading role in shaping balanced responses to growing threats and preventing the crisis from escalating, she noted. Dr. Monica William, an expert in international relations, said the joint statement spearheaded by Egypt was a diplomatic signal of critical timing and significance in an increasingly volatile regional landscape. The statement's call for restraint and the cessation of hostilities represents a revival of preventive diplomacy in a region often prone to rapid escalation, she noted. The Egyptian initiative was more than a symbolic gesture—it was a serious effort to reset the regional dynamics, particularly as Western mediation efforts have largely failed to prevent further deterioration, she pointed out. TMG climbs to 4th in Forbes' Top 50 Public Companies in Egypt' list on surging sales, assets

Talaat Moustafa Group Holding (TMG) has climbed to fourth place on the Forbes Middle East list of 'Top 50 Public Companies in Egypt for 2025', following a substantial increase in sales and assets. The real estate developer was also named the leading company in its sector for the year. The company advanced two places to secure the fourth position. The ranking reflects growth that saw the company's sales rise to $837m from $593m, while net profits increased to $284m from $70m. Total assets grew to $7bn from $4.2bn. TMG's performance was supported by its operations as Egypt's largest real estate developer, with a land portfolio of 125.9 million square metres across Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Oman. In 2024, the group's sales tripled to $10bn, driven by the launch of the 'Banan' project in Saudi Arabia and the 'SouthMed' project in Egypt. The 'SouthMed' project has generated $7bn in sales since its launch in July 2024. In 2025, TMG continued its regional expansion with projects in Iraq and Oman, increasing its international land portfolio to 29 million square metres. The company said it anticipates generating approximately $33bn in sales from its projects across the three regional markets. The performance of Egyptian companies listed in the 'Top 50' showed broad growth over the past year. According to the report, the total assets of these companies grew by 33% to $118.8bn by the end of December 2024, a figure equivalent to over 34% of Egypt's GDP. Combined sales for the 50 firms increased by 34.5% to $35.6bn, and net profits rose by 45% to $6.5bn. Their collective market capitalisation reached $35.1bn as of market close on 25 April 2025, a 19.6% increase from the previous year's $29.4bn. The banking and financial services sector had the largest representation on the list with 17 companies, which together accounted for $13.5 billion in sales and $78.4bn in total assets. The industrial, real estate, and construction sectors followed, each with seven companies on the list. According to the publication, its research team gathered financial data from the Egyptian Exchange to compile the ranking. Companies were classified using four equally weighted metrics: sales, total assets, and net profits for the 2024 fiscal year, along with market capitalisation based on market close on 25 April 2025. Companies with equal scores received the same rank. Firms that had not disclosed their audited 2024 financial statements by 25 April 2025 were excluded from the list. The report used foreign currency exchange rates from 25 April 2025.
