Wait! The Sims is a lot bleaker than I remember

The Guardian10-02-2025

When I was growing up, the genre-defining dollhouse sim The Sims was the ultimate escape. I'd build dream homes, cultivate a neighbourhood of weird and wonderful friends and live out a fantasy adult life.
So when EA surprise-dropped a rerelease of The Sims 1 and 2 last weekend to celebrate the series' 25th anniversary, with all expansions included (my nine-year-old self's dream) naturally I was compelled to return to my happy place, revisiting my 10-hour pyjama-clad marathon sessions micromanaging the lives of the Newbies, Roomies, and the Goths, and occasionally removing their pool ladders when they were taking a little swim, and only taking a necessary pause for mum's roast dinner.
While the familiar chaos of breezy music, tragic pool accidents, and my own personal french maid delivered a powerful dose of nostalgia, there is something else lurking beneath this game's quirky and cheerful exterior, something that I wasn't conscious of when I was a kid. To my surprise, the game now feels less like a chance to live out your dream life, and more like a struggle simulator. (I also forgot how much time my Sims spent playing chess.) Like a Lynchian picket-fence town, I realised, there's a darkness lurking under suburban sheen.
The original Sims games were more dystopian than today's perky, brightly coloured The Sims 4. The Sims 1 instead offers a desaturated daily grind. The contrast isn't just the aesthetic – 20 years ago, Sims had no dreams or ambitions. Your virtual families worked long hours for expensive lives, where death – and some of the most gut-wrenching music in game history – lurked behind even mundane everyday tasks.
Forget personality, aspirations and tastes. The Sims 1 is a capitalist nightmare where survival trumps self-actualisation.
I forgot how much time the original Sims actually spend working. They do boring, dull jobs for little pay, out of your sight – making the simple message that you get when they are promoted (or passed over) strangely impactful. Put that meagre wage packet towards the cheapest oven on offer, and it'll probably catch fire and kill you. This is a game that punishes you for being poor. It means that the rich, like the iconic Goth family, in their still-stunning graveyard-edged stone mansion stay, rich – while the poor stay poor. Social mobility in The Sims 1, I learned, is near impossible.
And having a social life? Forget it, at least when you're on the bottom rung of your random career ladder. There's simply no time to make friends, something I didn't remember from my days as a Sims-obsessed tween. I now realise that my neighbourhood's messy EastEnders-level entanglements were largely scripted in my head. Instead, you must chip away at ++ and – – relationship scores until you can finally, anticlimactically 'Play in bed,' thanks to the Livin' it Up expansion pack that provided the world's most basic sex education to a generation of 11-year-olds. There's nothing dark about that expansion's heart-shaped bed. I still want it in real life.
Even these moments with the most meaningful loves of my Sims' lives seemed to offer them nothing – they were transactional, serving nothing more than to unlock new interactions. They are performing for my enjoyment, not theirs.
Friendship is also bleakly transactional here: you need a certain number of them to climb the ranks at work. Stay lonely, and you'll stay poor, and probably die from having a cheap, spontaneously combusting microwave. It's an especially sad existence for single Sims who live alone. Exhausted from work, if you don't find time to call your friends on the phone for hours – or they decline to come over – your relationships decay rapidly. Like Black Mirror's award-winning Nosedive episode, losing social credibility quickly sees things spiral quickly downhill for your Sims.
And nothing flips a millennial's stomach as quick as the music that heralds a terrifying, sudden burglary. It's still horrifying 25 years later, so just hope that you had the foresight to spend your meagre savings on a burglar alarm. That's before we even get into visits from the Grim Reaper, and creepy prank calls. These unexpected callers frighten me just as much now as they did then.

Perhaps my new darker perspective on the game comes from the world we live in now. I'm finally living my fantasy adult life – I just didn't realise it would be less lounging in gothic-mansion dream homes, and more feeling overworked, underpaid and on the verge of a spiralling breakdown. In 2025, an era of economic anxiety and burnout, the grind of The Sims feels brutal.
For all its existential dread, The Sims 1 is still an escape. Sure, it presents a kind of capitalist nightmare. But, it is a capitalist nightmare you can control. No matter how hard the daily slog got, you can always type in a cheat code and wipe away financial stress with a click – the ultimate fantasy. It's also weirdly accurate: just like in real life, external advantages (and cheating the system) are way more likely to lead to success than grinding away and following the rules.
Yes, The Sims 1 was and remains a dystopian suburban treadmill, but it also makes room for humour. It's a world where chaos is funny, failure is temporary, and the worst tragedies could be undone with the click of a mouse.

Tom Hanks reacts after daughter reveals childhood of 'violence and deprivation'

Tom Hanks has spoken about his daughter's recent comments about 'violence and deprivation' while on the red carpet. On Thursday, the actor was on the red carpet for Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme and was asked about his daughter E.A Hanks, short for Elizabeth Anne, and her memoir. In the tell-all titled The 10: A Memoir of Family and The Open Road, EA opened up about her turbulent early years, and revealed she had a childhood of 'violence and deprivation' with her mother. The interviewer asked Tom how proud he felt of his only daughter, given her recent success with her novel. 'There is a pride because she shares it with me,' he said in an interview with Access Hollywood. 'She's very open about what the process is.' 'As a dad, if you've had kids you realise that you see who they are when they're about 6 weeks old. Their personality is on display right there, their temper, the way they see the world is demonstrated in their body language and on their face,' he said. 'I'm not surprised that my daughter had the wherewithal as well as the curiosity as well as I'm going to say perhaps shoot herself in the foot kind of wherewithal in order to examine this thing. 'That I think she was incredibly honest about.' He then praised her work and said she was proud of her mind. 'We all come from checkered, cracked lives, all of us. Despite the fact that part of it would seem as though she worked for some international, well-known firm with a copyrighted last name. 'She knows that and she leans into absolutely everything. I think anybody who does that is a bold journalistic, literate mind, and I'm just thrilled I can say the same thing about my daughter.' The book is an account of the six-month road trip she took in 2019 from Los Angeles to book follows EA as she seeks to know more about her late mother's troubled life. EA's mother, Susan Dillingham, died in 2002 from lung cancer at the age of 49. EA was just 19 at the time. In her memoir, EA claims she and her brother, Colin Hanks, were physically abused and neglected by Dillingham. She also claimed that they lived with her until their custody arrangement changed after their mother got violent. 'One night, her emotional violence became physical violence, and in the aftermath, I moved to Los Angeles, right smack in the middle of the seventh grade,' she wrote in an excerpt published by People. More Trending 'My custody arrangement basically switched — now I lived in L.A. and visited Sacramento on the weekends and in the summer.' The writer also claimed that her actor father once had to 'track her down' after she was taken out of school. 'My dad came to pick us up from school and we're not there,' she said. 'And it turns out we haven't been there for two weeks and he has to track us down.' The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road by EA Hanks was released on April 8. Got a story? EA FC 25 patch notes – passing, heading and PlayStyles upgraded in big update

EA FC 25 Title Update 15 is available now for players on PC, PlayStation and Xbox and Nintendo Switch The latest, and potentially final, set of EA FC 25 patch notes has been released by EA Sports, with some big gameplay changes being made in EA FC 25 Title Update 15. As Season 7: Team of the Season comes to a close, EA Sports has revealed a new set of EA FC 25 patch notes for players to feast their eyes on, with EA making some of the biggest changes we've seen since Title Update 10. Titled the 'Season Finale Update', the latest set of EA FC 25 patch notes are focused on making changes to gameplay based on community feedback, specifically to passing, heading, and goalkeeping. ‌ Along with the gameplay changes, some updates have been made to Ultimate Team, Career Mode, and the main menu, while the Season 8 Premium Pass rewards have also been revealed. These are the EA FC 25 patch notes for EA FC 25 Title Update 15: Season Finale. ‌ EA FC 25 Title Update 15 patch notes EA announced EA FC 25 Title Update 15 in the latest set of patch notes, and by the title, it seems safe to say that this could be the last major update of EA FC 25 as EA starts to turn its attention towards EA FC 26. The biggest change in the update has been to the gameplay, with a big fix being made to ground passing, meaning players with high passing stats will be able to complete ground passes more regularly, regardless of PlayStyles. We've recently spoken about how PlayStyles have started to ruin gameplay, so it's good to see EA also noticing these issues. Heading has also been improved in Title Update 15, and this was a much-needed change, with headers almost useless when trying to score goals. Goalkeepers, specifically goalkeepers with the Rush Out PlayStyle have also been nerfed, and in Ultimate Team, the maximum number of PlayStyles has been increased to five, the biggest it's ever been. EA FC 25 Title Update 15 is live now on Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Nintendo Switch. Here are the EA FC 25 Title Update 15 patch notes in full: Gameplay Updates Improving Ground Passes For Skilled Passers In the Season Finale Update, we've made the following passing change based on your feedback: Moderately increased Ground Pass accuracy for players with high Passing-related Attributes. This change does not impact Driven Ground Passes. ‌ With this change, we're looking to reduce the gap between players who can be excellent passers thanks to their high passing-related Attributes, and players who have passing-related PlayStyles. We want both types of players to be able to perform great passes. Of course, passing is still impacted by everything you'd expect, including clean inputs and defensive pressure on the passer. We want passing to feel authentic in FC 25, and we want players who pass the ball well in real life to pass it well in our game too. Reduced GK Rush Out PlayStyle Effectiveness We've tweaked goalkeepers in the Season Finale Update based on your feedback: ‌ Slightly reduced the rate of acceleration for goalkeepers with the Rush Out PlayStyle+. Significantly reduced the rate of acceleration for goalkeepers with the Rush Out PlayStyle. We've seen and heard from you that the keepers with the Rush Out PlayStyle+ were overly effective at closing down attackers. Naturally, we don't want to take away the ability of goalkeepers to rush incoming attackers, but with this change, our goal is to create more balanced one-on-one situations and encourage a wider variety of defensive strategies. Improving Header Accuracy We've seen your feedback about wanting headers to be a more viable attacking option, so we made the following change: ‌ Slightly increased the accuracy of headers performed by the shooting input. While nobody wants every single header to be a goal, we've seen the need for increasing the effectiveness of headers in FC 25. As always, we'll continue to look at your feedback on headers and all other gameplay aspects of FC 25. Ultimate Team Updates Season 8 And A New Premium Pass It's almost time for Season 8 in FUT, and it'll be kicking off on Thursday, June 5. The new season also brings a brand new Premium Pass to FC 25, and we've listed everything you can expect from it below. ‌ We have updated our Playstyle+ Evolution Consumables requirements for Season 8! In the Standard Ladder, the requirements for the Playstyle+ Evolutions will be: Max 95 OVR, Max 9 Playstyles, Max 3 Playstyle+. In the Premium Pass, the requirements for the Playstyle+ Evolutions will be: Max 96 OVR, Max 9 Playstyles, Max 3 Playstyle+. ‌ If you want to know about the Season Pass and how it works in-game, be sure to check out our Pitch Notes on it, complete with an FAQ section. Increased Maximum Amount Of PlayStyle+ Assignments With the Season Finale Update, Player Items can now have up to five PlayStyle+ in Ultimate Team. We're making this update so we can provide you with a larger variety of Player Items going forward. You may notice that you can now gain up to a maximum of five new PlayStyle+ as rewards through Evolutions, or certain Player Items show more PlayStyle+ UI indicators. ‌ Of course, this doesn't mean that every Player Item with multiple PlayStyles+ will have five of them, it just means that five is the new max. Career Mode, Main Menu, And More As part of the Season Finale Update, we're adding the final set of Live Start Points for FC 25, plus you can now play as the following ICONs in Player Career: Birgit Prinz George Best Johan Cruyff Garrincha In Manager Career, you will now be able to play 5v5 Youth Tournament Matches in co-op, up to four players, via the addition of the Side Select functionality. Reasonably priced, the Season 7 Premium Pass was a hit with the Ultimate Team community, and EA has now confirmed a Premium Pass will be released once again for Season 8: Shapeshifters. ‌ As part of the latest set of patch notes for EA FC 25's Season Finale update, EA revealed the EA FC 25 Season 8 Objective rewards for the Premium Pass, and it looks incredible.
