EA is going to make a new Battlefield game every year claims source

Metro18 hours ago
As excitement mounts for Battlefield 6, a prominent analyst claims that EA is planning to copy the release schedule and studio set-up for Call Of Duty.
Not for the first time, EA is getting excited about the prospect of Battlefield becoming a true rival to Call Of Duty. This has happened multiple times in the past, with previous entries, but the hype behind Battlefield 6 does seem especially potent, especially given how many people have been playing the open beta.
It's still unlikely to come very close to the sales figures or player numbers for this year's Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 but if it does well then it will encourage EA to plough more resources into the franchise and, inevitably, create more sequels.
According to one industry figure the plan is to eventually have yearly sequels, by mimicking the way Call Of Duty works, with three separate studios working in rotation.
Ignoring the fact that the Call Of Duty system has become increasingly unpredictable in recent years, as games take longer to make, the comments suggests that it will be five or six years before EA is able to churn out sequels at the rate they want.
That sounds believable enough, and getting carried away with the potential success of Battlefield, before it's had a chance to prove itself, is certainly something EA has done multiple times before, but the problem with the rumour is that it comes from controversial industry analyst Michael Patcher.
Not only that but the information is from the same podcast in which Patcher claims that Sony's live service game Fairgame$ had been cancelled. Something which he ended up retracting just hours later, while admitting, 'I have no info on the game at all.'

That was a rumour though, which Pachter does not usually peddle in, whereas the Battlefield information supposedly comes from personal conversations with EA developers.
'I talked to EA, Byron Beede, good dude, former Activision guy who worked at Infinity Ward with Vince [Zampella]. He's running the Battlefield franchise. And their goal is three studios making Battlefield on a three year basis. So they can get to Battlefield annually,' said Patcher.
'He said it's going to take five or six years before they can get two in a row, so we're not going to get there for a while. But that's their plan.' More Trending
If that information had come from anyone other than Pachter it would have had few doubters, but so far there's been no attempt from Byron Beede to deny the story, which is something at least.
Especially since it became available on Game Pass, there's been some debate as to whether it still makes sense to have a new Call Of Duty game ever year, especially as publishers now make more money from microtransactions than they do game sales.
While yearly sequels used to be commonplace in the games industry they're now almost exclusively limited to sports titles and Call Of Duty.
Whether Battlefield will be added to that list remains to be seen, as even if Battlefield 6 is a major hit a lot can change in the five years necessary to set up the new studio system Pachter is describing.

The best-selling new game of 2025 in Europe is not Monster Hunter Wilds

New sales data has revealed Europe's best-selling games of the year, with the number one spot going to a 2024 title. We're more than halfway through the year and you already know what we think the best video games of 2025 have been so far. But which ones have sold the most? If we're talking worldwide, that accolade goes to Monster Hunter Wilds. While sales have slowed down over the last several months, it has still sold more than 10 million copies, after an early February launch. However, new sales data shows that the picture in Europe is somewhat different, revealing that a different title has beaten Capcom's smash hit, although the best seller overall is an older game from 2024. According to sales data by European charts company GSD, as shared with The Game Business, Europe's most successful new release of the year is Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows, which launched a month after Monster Hunter Wilds in March. Although Ubisoft has been reticent to share exact sales figures (only saying the game has reached more than five million players), it's always seemed like Ubisoft is happy with Assassin's Creed Shadows' performance. In the company's report for the 2025 fiscal year, Ubisoft said the game had 'the second highest day one sales revenue in franchise history – second only to Assassin's Creed Valhalla – setting a new record for Ubisoft's day one performance on the PlayStation digital store.' Ubisoft must be relieved considering Assassin's Creed Shadow's pre-release period was plagued by controversy, regarding the inclusion of Yasuke, a black samurai, as one of the playable protagonists. Despite so much online outrage directed towards the game (to the point where Ubisoft felt it had to introduce new measures to protect its staff from abuse), clearly most people didn't care and just wanted to play the new Assassin's Creed. While Ubisoft did offer a bizarre semi-apology to try and placate dissenters, it's very hard to imagine that made any difference. More Trending All that said, Assassin's Creed Shadows is not the best-selling game in Europe altogether. That spot belongs to EA Sports FC 25, which isn't that surprising as the top-seller is usually a game from the previous year, and usually either FIFA/EA Sports FC or Call Of Duty. EA Sports FC 25 (EA) Assassin's Creed Shadows (Ubisoft) Grand Theft Auto 5 (Rockstar) Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar) Hogwarts Legacy (Warner Bros) Split Fiction (EA) Monster Hunter Wilds (Capcom) Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (Activision Blizzard) Mario Kart World (Nintendo) (digital sales data unavailable) Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (Plaion) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered (Bethesda) Star Wars Battlefront 2 (EA) Elden Ring: Nightreign (Bandai Namco) It Takes Two (EA) Grand Theft Auto Online (Rockstar) NBA 2K25 (2K Games) F1 25 (EA) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege (Ubisoft) Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (Nintendo) (digital sales data unavailable) Battlefield 1 (EA) Despite this success, EA Sports FC 25 has reportedly been something of a flop, at least by the standards of the series. At the beginning of the year, EA admitted the game's sales had underperformed, which led to copious job cuts. GSD reports that overall spending on consoles and PC in Europe has dropped by over 2%, while overall unit sales have dropped by 9% – something GSD attributes to the 8% increase in the average selling price of games. That said, digital spending still increased by 8% (again, due to price increases) while physical games spending dropped by 16%. Just in case you needed another reminder of the dwindling relevance of physical releases. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Roblox parent petition calls for CEO to resign with over 100,000 signatures

The controversy around Roblox has accelerated via petitions, lawsuits, and investigations, as concerns grow around its child safety protocols. Roblox is be one of the biggest games in the world, alongside Fortnite and Minecraft, but it is also the most controversial. The online gaming platform has been frequently accused of exploiting children, while a report last year dubbed it an 'X-rated paedophile hellscape', following an investigation. Roblox has denied all the claims levelled against it, but the game is facing a new wave of problems which have snowballed over the past week. Legal issues for Roblox began with Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill, who filed a lawsuit against the Roblox Corporation on August 14, 2025. The lawsuit claims the platform facilitates 'the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana's children'. 'It's basically open season for sex predators on this app,' Murrill said during a press conference. 'Roblox is violating Louisiana law, and that's why we've filed this lawsuit.' The lawsuit is looking to prohibit Roblox Corporation from 'engaging in any activity in violation of [the] Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act', and to ensure 'Roblox has adequate safety features' to protect children on the platform. Roblox issued a lengthy statement to address the 'erroneous claims and misconceptions' around the platform, in response to the lawsuit. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. 🚨 BREAKING: Today I'm suing Roblox – the #1 gaming site for children and teens – and a breeding ground for sex to Roblox's lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana. Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators… — Attorney General Liz Murrill (@AGLizMurrill) August 14, 2025 'Every day, tens of millions of people around the world use Roblox to learn STEM skills, play, and imagine and have a safe experience on our platform,' the statement reads. 'Any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue. 'No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection, including efforts to take users to other platforms, where safety standards and moderation practices may differ. We continuously work to block those efforts and to enhance our moderation approaches to promote a safe and enjoyable environment for all users.' However, this lawsuit isn't the only problem facing Roblox. A petition created by MrMhGaming has called for Roblox Corporation CEO, David Baszuki, to resign. At the time of writing, it has racked up over 112,000 signatures. 'Roblox is supposed to be a safe and creative space for children,' the petition reads. 'But under the leadership of CEO David Baszucki, that safety has been repeatedly compromised. 'Instead of prioritising the protection of young users, Roblox Corporation continues to allow harmful and exploitative behaviour to thrive on its platform — with little accountability or transparency.' The situation has attracted the attention of famous investigators too. As confirmed on X, journalist Chris Hansen, who is best known for hosting the hidden camera reality series To Catch A Predator, is investigating the scandal around Roblox. More Trending 'You may have heard that my streaming crime network TruBlu and I are investigating the exploitation of children on the popular gaming platform, Roblox,' Hansen said. 'It's absolutely true and we're deep into it. I've already interviewed law enforcement investigators and victims of this horrible activity.' He added: 'Will Roblox actually say anything about it? Will it make any changes? We're going to do our best to hold them accountable.' Launched in 2006, Roblox is a free-to-play platform primarily driven by user-created content and in-game purchases. It grew in popularity in the late 2010s, but concerns around its content moderation have led to it being banned in several countries, including Turkey, China, and Jordan. Nintendo Direct announced for tomorrow but it's not what you're hoping for

A surprise Nintendo Direct is happening this week, but it's dedicated to a Switch 2 exclusive nobody was asking for. Video game leaks are so prevalent, it usually means most Nintendo Direct presentations are rumoured well ahead of time, especially since the advent of the Switch 2, but Nintendo has managed to keep its latest announcement under wraps right until the last moment. As announced first on the Nintendo Today app (and later on X), a Nintendo Direct will take place on Tuesday, August 19 at 2pm UK time. Unlike the recent Partner Showcase and Indie World presentations, it will feature games from Nintendo's first party slate. Or rather one game. If you're hoping for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond or Splatoon Raiders, you'll be out of luck though. This 'in-depth look' is dedicated entirely to Kirby Air Riders, for a whopping 45 minutes. For a comparison, the Directs dedicated to Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza – the biggest Switch 2 exclusives so far – were both around 17 minutes long. So this is a serious amount of time to dedicate to the sequel to what was a very simple game. The reason for this lengthy runtime might be the creator at the helm. Kirby Air Riders is directed by the actual creator of Kirby, Masahiro Sakurai, who is best known today as the man behind the Super Smash Bros. series. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. This is the first Kirby game Sakurai has worked on since its predecessor Kirby Air Ride, a single-button racing game which came out on the Nintendo GameCube in 2003. The original isn't exactly held in high regard, even among Kirby sickos, so it's puzzling why Nintendo is putting so much energy into a belated sequel, whose basic gameplay is likely to be quite similar to Mario Kart. More Trending Many fans have posited the idea that Nintendo may have greenlit Kirby Air Riders as a favour to Sakurai, in exchange for him working on a new Smash Bros. game. Although it's unlikely that'll ever be admitted to publicly, even if it is true. Following the Direct announcement, Sakurai has promised there'll be 'a lot more information' on Kirby Air Riders from both his X account and the newly launched social media accounts for the title. He also posted a picture of his cat, because why not. Considering we're getting a dedicated Direct for Kirby Air Riders before Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, it's possible the former could be released sooner than expected. With the Switch 2 version of Kirby And The Forgotten Land set to arrive later this month on August 28 too, we might be in for a Kirby onslaught over the next couple of months. This Nintendo Direct will be broadcast just hours before Gamescom Opening Night Live, which is set to kick off tomorrow at 7pm BST. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter.
