Nintendo Direct announced for tomorrow but it's not what you're hoping for

Metro7 hours ago
A surprise Nintendo Direct is happening this week, but it's dedicated to a Switch 2 exclusive nobody was asking for.
Video game leaks are so prevalent, it usually means most Nintendo Direct presentations are rumoured well ahead of time, especially since the advent of the Switch 2, but Nintendo has managed to keep its latest announcement under wraps right until the last moment.
As announced first on the Nintendo Today app (and later on X), a Nintendo Direct will take place on Tuesday, August 19 at 2pm UK time. Unlike the recent Partner Showcase and Indie World presentations, it will feature games from Nintendo's first party slate. Or rather one game.
If you're hoping for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond or Splatoon Raiders, you'll be out of luck though. This 'in-depth look' is dedicated entirely to Kirby Air Riders, for a whopping 45 minutes.
For a comparison, the Directs dedicated to Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza – the biggest Switch 2 exclusives so far – were both around 17 minutes long. So this is a serious amount of time to dedicate to the sequel to what was a very simple game.
The reason for this lengthy runtime might be the creator at the helm. Kirby Air Riders is directed by the actual creator of Kirby, Masahiro Sakurai, who is best known today as the man behind the Super Smash Bros. series.

This is the first Kirby game Sakurai has worked on since its predecessor Kirby Air Ride, a single-button racing game which came out on the Nintendo GameCube in 2003.
The original isn't exactly held in high regard, even among Kirby sickos, so it's puzzling why Nintendo is putting so much energy into a belated sequel, whose basic gameplay is likely to be quite similar to Mario Kart. More Trending
Many fans have posited the idea that Nintendo may have greenlit Kirby Air Riders as a favour to Sakurai, in exchange for him working on a new Smash Bros. game. Although it's unlikely that'll ever be admitted to publicly, even if it is true.
Following the Direct announcement, Sakurai has promised there'll be 'a lot more information' on Kirby Air Riders from both his X account and the newly launched social media accounts for the title. He also posted a picture of his cat, because why not.
Considering we're getting a dedicated Direct for Kirby Air Riders before Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, it's possible the former could be released sooner than expected. With the Switch 2 version of Kirby And The Forgotten Land set to arrive later this month on August 28 too, we might be in for a Kirby onslaught over the next couple of months.
This Nintendo Direct will be broadcast just hours before Gamescom Opening Night Live, which is set to kick off tomorrow at 7pm BST.

Roblox parent petition calls for CEO to resign with over 100,000 signatures

The controversy around Roblox has accelerated via petitions, lawsuits, and investigations, as concerns grow around its child safety protocols. Roblox is be one of the biggest games in the world, alongside Fortnite and Minecraft, but it is also the most controversial. The online gaming platform has been frequently accused of exploiting children, while a report last year dubbed it an 'X-rated paedophile hellscape', following an investigation. Roblox has denied all the claims levelled against it, but the game is facing a new wave of problems which have snowballed over the past week. Legal issues for Roblox began with Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill, who filed a lawsuit against the Roblox Corporation on August 14, 2025. The lawsuit claims the platform facilitates 'the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana's children'. 'It's basically open season for sex predators on this app,' Murrill said during a press conference. 'Roblox is violating Louisiana law, and that's why we've filed this lawsuit.' The lawsuit is looking to prohibit Roblox Corporation from 'engaging in any activity in violation of [the] Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act', and to ensure 'Roblox has adequate safety features' to protect children on the platform. Roblox issued a lengthy statement to address the 'erroneous claims and misconceptions' around the platform, in response to the lawsuit. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. 🚨 BREAKING: Today I'm suing Roblox – the #1 gaming site for children and teens – and a breeding ground for sex to Roblox's lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana. Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators… — Attorney General Liz Murrill (@AGLizMurrill) August 14, 2025 'Every day, tens of millions of people around the world use Roblox to learn STEM skills, play, and imagine and have a safe experience on our platform,' the statement reads. 'Any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue. 'No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection, including efforts to take users to other platforms, where safety standards and moderation practices may differ. We continuously work to block those efforts and to enhance our moderation approaches to promote a safe and enjoyable environment for all users.' However, this lawsuit isn't the only problem facing Roblox. A petition created by MrMhGaming has called for Roblox Corporation CEO, David Baszuki, to resign. At the time of writing, it has racked up over 112,000 signatures. 'Roblox is supposed to be a safe and creative space for children,' the petition reads. 'But under the leadership of CEO David Baszucki, that safety has been repeatedly compromised. 'Instead of prioritising the protection of young users, Roblox Corporation continues to allow harmful and exploitative behaviour to thrive on its platform — with little accountability or transparency.' The situation has attracted the attention of famous investigators too. As confirmed on X, journalist Chris Hansen, who is best known for hosting the hidden camera reality series To Catch A Predator, is investigating the scandal around Roblox. More Trending 'You may have heard that my streaming crime network TruBlu and I are investigating the exploitation of children on the popular gaming platform, Roblox,' Hansen said. 'It's absolutely true and we're deep into it. I've already interviewed law enforcement investigators and victims of this horrible activity.' He added: 'Will Roblox actually say anything about it? Will it make any changes? We're going to do our best to hold them accountable.' Launched in 2006, Roblox is a free-to-play platform primarily driven by user-created content and in-game purchases. It grew in popularity in the late 2010s, but concerns around its content moderation have led to it being banned in several countries, including Turkey, China, and Jordan. Amazon Prime Video quietly adds the most hyped movie of 2023

One of the most hyped movies of the last few years has finally landed on Amazon Prime Video after taking in more than $1.44billion at the global box office. Barbie sent us all into a whirlwind when it was released in 2023, and the world hasn't quite managed to recover from the buzz. Margot Robbie led the A-List cast as the titular doll, starring opposite just about anyone in Hollywood, including Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa and Michael Cera. Thankfully, we can relive the magic as Greta Gerwig's masterpiece has arrived on the streaming platform. It currently commands a huge Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%, with critics branding it 'dazzling', a 'love letter to women' and a 'jazzy and infectiously vibrant summer blockbuster'. The hit focused on Barbie and co enjoying their lives 'in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. 'However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.' Barbie broke records when it was released and became the highest-grossing film of 2023 – it also landed a string of Oscar nominations, despite Margot and Greta being snubbed in the best actress and best director categories. It truly took on a life of its own upon release, as cinema-goers enjoyed the opportunity of turning the premiere into an entire event.
