General body sanctions 90 posts, including 80 senior residents for PGI
IN A significant development, the general body cleared all 29 agendas presented by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research aimed at enhancing patient care, services, and infrastructure during a meeting held on Friday, also sanctioning 90 new posts, including 80 senior residents, four faculty members, and six demonstrators for the institute.
Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda chaired the meeting, attended by PGI general body members and guests.
PGIMER Deputy Director Pankaj Rai said all agendas of the general body meeting were referred to the Institute Body, which gives a final nod to crucial matters related to infrastructure, equipment, patient care and services, recruitments, etc., for the institute. 'We are very happy that all 29 agendas received a nod.'
'During the session, the union health minister emphasised the importance of shaping PGI's future through the preparation of a comprehensive 'Vision 2047' document,' he said. 'This strategic plan aims to position PGI as a global leader in medical education, research and healthcare over the next two decades. The institute was entrusted with developing strategies to enhance its academic programs, infrastructure, and community outreach efforts,' he said.
Rai said the long-standing demand for a dedicated Technical Cadre at the PGI was approved, too.
The implementation of a six-tier cadre structure is expected to streamline technical support, improve operational efficiency, and enhance overall institute functioning. 'This has been long-standing since about 2003, and more than 700 employees will benefit from it, and we received complete support for the Institute's mission of excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare,' said Rai.
To strengthen the Satellite Centre in Ferozepur, 637 positions were approved, comprising 111 faculty and 526 non-faculty staff to ensure the Centre's full operational readiness and help alleviate the patient load at PGI, he said.
Nadda commended PGI's exemplary service during 'Op Sindoor,' highlighting the institute's commitment to the nation. He praised the swift response by the PGI in sending five ambulances stocked with medical supplies and 218 units of blood.
He lauded the PGI for dispatching its multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nursing officers, and ambulance drivers from various parts of India, exemplifying unity and a spirit of national service.
'We have to prepare and submit a detailed project report (DPR) for the Sarangpur Project, which envisions the development of a 100-bedded medical college, an Advanced Cancer Institute, a Trauma Centre, and outpatient departments (OPD). The initiative seeks to substantially expand PGI's healthcare and training capacities in the region,' Rai said.
The Sangrur Centre has an OPD, accommodating more than 700 patients daily, with many surgeries also done here, and the waiting time for surgeries is almost negligible, he said.

ICAR-NIBSM empowers 4100 farmers with sustainable farming techniques
Raipur: In a robust push toward sustainable agriculture, the ICAR–National Institute of Biotic Stress Management (NIBSM), based in Raipur, has concluded a week-long outreach initiative under the nationwide Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan. Launched by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the campaign aims to bridge the gap between lab-based innovations and grassroots agricultural practices. Between May 29 and June 3, a team of 20 scientists from ICAR-NIBSM visited 49 villages across 25 blocks in 10 districts of Chhattisgarh. Partnering with 25 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and the State Agriculture Department, the team directly interacted with over 4,100 farmers, promoting sustainable practices and science-backed solutions. The campaign focused on Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technology, which farmers welcomed for its water-saving and cost-effective benefits. Scientists also advocated for Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the use of biofertilizers, biopesticides, and biocontrol agents, and techniques for biotic stress management. Farmers received training in natural farming, soil health management, seed treatment, and balanced fertilizer use. Notably, awareness on the 'One Health' approach—addressing human, animal, and environmental health through responsible antibiotic use—was also a part of the initiative. The outreach included detailed sessions on central and state govt schemes, offering farmers insights into available support for inputs, crop insurance, and infrastructure. These interactions also allowed scientists to gather feedback on field challenges, helping refine future research and interventions. At a press briefing, Dr PK Rai, director of ICAR-NIBSM, lauded the scientists' efforts and emphasized the need for sustained engagement with the farming community. "Science-led solutions can transform rural livelihoods. Our mission is to reduce input costs, increase yields, and enhance farmers' quality of life," Dr. Rai stated.

Buy consumables, medicines through Central Procurement Agency: Delhi govt to state-run hospitals
New Delhi: The Delhi government has directed all state-run hospitals to buy consumables and medicines through the Central Procurement Agency (CPA), a move which will allow doctors to spend more time on patient care , according to officials. Earlier, hospitals either used to make direct purchases or used the cart feature on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal, which led to inflated prices , the officials said. Going forward, hospitals will have to submit their demands to the CPA, which will assess the urgency of supply and coordinate the procurement process on behalf of the hospitals. Direct purchase of medicines will no longer be permitted in any government hospital, they said. "It has come to the attention of the minister, Health and Family Welfare, that certain hospitals and institutions have been procuring medical devices, consumables, equipment and machinery through direct purchases or by using the cart feature on the Government e-Marketplace portal," the order stated. "This practice has led to inflated prices, significant price discrepancies and raises serious concerns of audit non-compliance," it said. The CPA will be responsible for the purchase of medicines, consumables, medical devices, machinery and equipment. It will carry out procurement based on the requirements submitted by hospitals, institutions and health centres across Delhi. This decision has been taken to allow doctors and medical staff to focus their time and energy on patient care instead of administrative processes. As a result, patients will receive better and more dedicated healthcare services, the officials said. Any violation of these directions will be taken seriously and appropriate action will be taken by the concerned authority, they said. It must be ensured that all procedures are carried out strictly in accordance with the established rules so that transparency and accountability in the system are maintained. PTI
