Queen Alexandra's coronation dress to go on show in Buckingham Palace exhibition
The dress will be displayed alongside more than 300 items from the Royal Collection in a new exhibition, The Edwardians: Age of Elegance, in The King's Gallery, the Royal Collection Trust said.
The exhibition, which opens on Friday, explores the public and private lives of Alexandra and her husband, Edward VII, as well as George V and Queen Mary.
The exhibition's audio guide is narrated by Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville.
Alexandra, daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark, married Edward, then Prince of Wales, in St George's Chapel, Windsor, on March 10 1863.
Her coronation took place on August 9 1902 and the gold coronation gown, designed by Paris-based fashion house Morin Blossier, broke with tradition as coronation dresses of the time were usually plain white or cream, inspired by ecclesiastical robes.
The trust described Alexandra as a fashion trailblazer and said she chose a gold dress that would shimmer in the electric lights that had been installed in Westminster Abbey for the first time.
The dress was also sewn with thousands of tiny gold spangles.
It was also, by her request, the first royal outfit to feature the national emblems of Britain, the rose, thistle and shamrock.
This tradition continued on all future coronation dresses including those of Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Camilla.
Exhibition curator Kathryn Jones said: 'While it has darkened over time, Alexandra's choice of a shimmering gold fabric would have been incredibly striking at the coronation. There are descriptions in contemporary newspapers of moments in the ceremony where the Queen appears in an extraordinary blaze of golden light, the dress glowing in the new electric lighting.
'It's a powerful example of Edward and Alexandra's attempts to balance tradition and modernity as they stood on the cusp of the 20th century; a shining moment of glamour before the world was at war.'
The exhibition also features jewellery worn by Alexandra at the coronation, including a diamond necklace and earrings given by Edward, a Dagmar necklace from the King of Denmark, and a diamond-handled ostrich feather fan.
The display also includes personal items from the royal households, early photographs taken by Alexandra on one of the earliest Kodak cameras, Faberge animal sculptures, and objects from royal social events.
The Edwardians: Age of Elegance is open to the public at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, from April 11 to November 23.

Grieve honoured to return to Defender Burghley Horse Trials
Grieve, 43, will take to the saddle once more in three week's time at Burghley House in Stamford as he competes across three disciplines of show jumping, dressage and cross-country at the prestigious competition. The Leicestershire-based event rider will compete on Autograf, a 13-year-old British-bred sport horse, and will be cheered on by plenty of friends and family as he competes at the 5* event under an hour from his home. 'It's basically like having the events in our back garden, near enough,' he said. 'What's great about the event is there is something for everyone so even my neighbours will be coming to watch because they're coming to have a lovely time and also I'll be here as well. 'It's lovely to have local support and knowing that lots of my mates will be here. It's wonderful in that respect.' Grieve's family have long been involved in the world-renowned eventing competition throughout the years he has competed, having first ridden in 2012. Their attendance will once more be expected to cheer him on around the course as he recalls fond memories of past competitions with his mum. 'My mum has been a fence judge for lots of years and she's been fence judging every time I've competed and I've always shouted, 'Hi Mum!' as I've jumped her jump which is quite sweet,' enthused Grieve. 'Last time I was here and I was approaching her jump she said to someone, 'Oh, he'll say 'Hi mum,'' and I was like, 'Hi Mum!' and she was like, 'See!' 'So Mum will definitely be here and Dad hopefully as well. My sister is actually fence judging this time which is cool.' Having completed the course an impressive six times before, Grieve is hoping to improve his performance once more, but mainly the privilege of attending means he is also focused on enjoying the whole experience. 'To just compete is a massive feather in the cap but to actually win doesn't even bear thinking about. I couldn't imagine if I won, I would be doing cartwheels everywhere,' he said. 'My expectations this time round. I just want to improve on the last time that I was here and try and up my placing a little bit. 'Maybe I would like to up my pace on the cross country a little bit because I am quite slow in that respect. This horse actually moves quite nicely so should contest. 'But mostly I want to have a lovely time, I want my horse to have a really lovely time and come back safe having enjoyed the experience. 'It's all about that really, I want my horse to have enjoyed it more than anything.' Grieve will experience the reverse of the cross country course for the first time since 2017 which will bring a new challenge to riders in 2025. And though such a change will bring a fresh excitement, the historic event which has been at the pinnacle of eventing for decades will remain as special as ever for riders and spectators alike. 'Burghley has got such an amazing atmosphere in every sense,' added Grieve. 'It's a really tough competition so it's really exciting to watch, but equally there's a huge village of trade stands and shops and experiences and things for everybody. 'It's not just for horsey folks, it's also for anybody else. It's something that all the family can enjoy so it's really worth coming to. 'It's a great experience for everybody and I really do hope many people come to enjoy the day.' Burghley still the pinnacle, says Townend
The Shropshire-based former world number one first competed in the historic 5* event in 2004 and has since gone on to claim nine CCI5* victories throughout his career. Despite winning team gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the 42-year-old claimed a victory at Burghley was the real dream as he prepares to compete for the title once again in September. 'Burghley is the iconic event of our sport. It's got such history with the house and it's a really special event from a horse point of view because of the terrain,' he said. 'To win Burghley three times is something that has never really sunk in. It's a bit weird even saying, and especially hearing it, because it's such a difficult thing to do. 'It's a childhood dream. It's what every event rider wants to win in the world, or should want to win in the world. 'To have actually done that is very, very special.' Competing across three disciplines of cross-country, show jumping and dressage, eventing is the ultimate equestrian test and there is no more iconic setting than Burghley. When Huddersfield-born Townend first won in 2009 on Carousel Quest, it marked a particularly memorable win as it came at a pivotal time in his career. 'I was only 26 and had just won Badminton Horse Trials, had won a very valuable class in Cardiff at the Millenium Stadium and just bought a farm,' he recalled. 'So it was a bit of a whirlwind for a normal person from the outskirts of Huddersfield to all of a sudden winning a lot of money, buying a farm then winning Badminton and then Burghley. 'I was definitely on a roll and flying high. No wonder I lost the plot for a day or two after that. It was special and it was a very good, happy time and a very big party time in our lives. 'The day after I won Burghley I was due to go on Ready, Steady, Cook down in London. I woke up in the clothes I was partying in, someone picked me up and I went on the TV in the same clothes I was wearing the night before. They were pretty wild times.' But Townend, who has won 101 FEI competitions and 13 British national titles, proved he could sustain such form with a sparkling career. Having most recently won at Burghley in 2023 on Ballaghmor Class, he will return once more and face the new challenge of a reversed cross-country course for the 2025 event. But Townend no doubt will relish the challenge as the last time the course ran in this direction, he took the victory in 2017 - Ballaghmor Class' first in the competition. 'I'm very excited [about the change of direction]. Hopefully it bodes well that the course is running the way it is this time,' he said. 'I think it's going to make it even more of a stamina test. I've not seen the course obviously, but I think that you go up Winner's Avenue pretty early on which is a pretty long, big hill. 'So whoever wins Burghley this year, it's going to be a hard-fought competition.' He will have tough competition with reigning champion Ros Canter expected to be back to defend her crown. But Townend knows as well as anyone else just what it takes to win at an event that represents the pinnacle of his sport. 'It takes a very special horse and rider combination to win it,' he asserted. 'It's basically the ultimate equine athlete and for a lot of things to go right in preparation and on the day.'
