It's not been a banner week for Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham.
It was announced on Tuesday that the 28-year-old would miss the rest of the season after suffering a leg injury against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.
Cunningham was injured in the second quarter when Sun guard Bria Hartley fell and made contact with her leg as she fell to the court after firing off a pass in the paint. Cunningham immediately grabbed her leg and fell to the court while screaming in pain before having to be helped to the back by the trainers.

If that weren't bad enough, Cunning revealed on the latest episode of her "Show Me Something" podcast that she'd been fined by the WNBA for the third time in the last month because of some comments she made about league refs showing favoritism to Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers.
"I'm officially 3 for 3 on being fined by the WNBA," Cunningham stated. "They didn't like my comments on Paige Bueckers. I didn't even say anything bad. It's insane."

To Cunningham's point, her remarks weren't overtly negative toward Bueckers or the officials. However, the fact that was critical of the referees at all likely didn't sit right with WNBA officials.
"I love Paige to death — do not get me wrong, I think she's a hell of a player and like I would love to play with her one day — but those refs were giving her every freaking whistle last night," Cunningham said on her podcast last week.
"Like, you literally couldn't touch her, and that [expletive] is so annoying to me. And if you're going to do that, give it to our guards. We know she's a good rookie and she's going to get some whistles, but like to get the treatment she got last night, was crazy."
Cunningham was also fined $500 after posting a TikTok video criticizing the officials, subtly calling them "stupid, slow, and useless" by li-synching Sabrina Carpenter's "Manchild."
She was fined $1,500 two weeks later after criticizing officials again for being too inconsistent with their foul calls.

Paige Bueckers scores 44 points, sets WNBA rookie record in Dallas Wings' loss
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Paige Bueckers put together not just one of the best shooting performances by a WNBA rookie, but one of the best performances ever by any player. The top pick in this year's draft scored 44 points in the Dallas Wings' 81-80 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night, the most points by a rookie in WNBA history and the most points in a game by any player this season. Bueckers sank 17 of 21 shots, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range and 6 of 6 at the free-throw line to become the first player in league history with 40-plus points on 80% shooting from the floor. She also had four rebounds and three assists. The WNBA first-year player record of 44 was set by Cynthia Cooper in the inaugural season of the WNBA (1997), when all players were 'first year.' The true rookie record was held by Candace Parker who scored 40 points in 2008. But it was a bittersweet performance for Bueckers, whose primary focus is on winning. 'I've always prided myself and the team on winning so that's obviously the main goal," she said. 'Honestly, I think I'm just most proud of this team, like, the way we fight. This team just means so much to me.' Bueckers, who scored Dallas' final 13 points, credited her teammates. 'Just my teammates getting me open. Screening for me, running some off-ball actions, trying to get myself open looks," she said. 'Just bringing the ball up the floor. (Luisa Geiselsoder) set amazing screens for me the entire night and then my teammates just looking for me, getting me the ball, getting me open.' Bueckers' teammate Arike Ogunbowale, who did not play on Wednesday night, posted 'ROY' (Rookie of the Year) on X. Bueckers is 60 points shy of Ogunbowale's franchise rookie scoring record of 630 points, set in 2019. 'Unreal. honored to play with you,' teammate Maddy Siegrist posted on X. Even the Sparks fans realized they were witnessing something special, cheering every Bueckers basket. 'It means a lot specifically because people have gotten to see the struggle and people have gotten to see the injuries, and the ups and downs,' said Bueckers, who struggled with injuries at UConn. Bueckers moved past Cooper for third-longest streak of consecutive double-digit scoring games by a rookie in WNBA history with 29. Las Vegas forward A'ja Wilson holds the record of 33. Bueckers had a chance to seal the game with the ball in her hands with 30 seconds left on the clock and a one-point lead. The rookie guard drew two defenders near the 3-point arc and unselfishly passed it to the corner for Aziaha James, whose 3-point attempt hit off the back of the rim. Los Angeles got it to its veteran guard Kelsey Plum, who dribbled down the clock before driving into the lane past multiple defenders to bank in a runner at the buzzer. ___ AP WNBA:

Paige Bueckers makes WNBA history in offensive explosion, Sparks vet gets last laugh
Dallas Wings rising star Paige Bueckers put together one of the best performance by a WNBA rookie in history but it was a Los Angeles Sparks veteran who spoiled the show. Bueckers, the former UConn Huskies standout who was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 WNBA draft, scored 44 points in the Wings' 81-80 loss to the Sparks. It was the most points in a single game by a rookie in WNBA history and the most points of any player this season. She was 17-of-21 from the field and made all of her four 3-point attempts. She added four rebounds and three assists. Cynthia Cooper, of the then-Houston Comets, scored 44 points in the league's inaugural season in 1997. All players were considered to be in their "first year" at the time. Sparks legend Candace Parker scored 40 points in 2008 and was the holder of the true rookie record. "I've always prided myself and the team on winning so that's obviously the main goal," she said. "Honestly, I think I'm just most proud of this team, like, the way we fight. This team just means so much to me." Bueckers is 60 points shy of Arike Ogunbowale's record for most points in a single season by a rookie. She scored 630 points in 2019. The Wings would have liked to get the win. Bueckers scored the Wings' final 13 points. But it was Sparks star Kelsey Plum who got the final say. Plum had the ball in her hands in the final seconds and was heavily guarded by several Wings players. She got around one defender and took the ball into the paint and put up a floater. The ball went off the backboard and into the net as the buzzer sounded. Plum had 20 points in the win. Rickea Jackson led the Sparks with 25 points, including six 3-pointers.

Caitlin Clark's return to Fever lineup remains mystery
Print Close By Ryan Gaydos Published August 21, 2025 Caitlin Clark has been on the bench nursing an injury since the Indiana Fever were on the road against the Connecticut Sun just moments away from the All-Star break. Since then, her return to the floor has been closely guarded. Clark's injured right groin has failed to heal enough for her to even return to the practice floor. Fever head coach Stephanie White told reporters that there was no timetable for her to return to the lineup. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON "Until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, it's really status quo," she told reporters on Wednesday. To make matters more frustrating, multiple reports indicated on Wednesday that Clark suffered a bone bruise in her left ankle while rehabbing from her groin injury. A source told the Indy Star the ankle issue wouldn't have affected her timeline. Sophie Cunningham, who is also set to miss the rest of the season following a torn MCL against the Sun, dropped a few nuggets about Clark's injury and recovery process. "She doesn't even know (when she'll be back). Literally, it's a day-by-day legit type of thing," she said on the "Show Me Something" podcast. "Yeah, it's close, you have to remember she would be playing if she wasn't in the WNBA right now. At this level, with how deep and how good people are nowadays in our league, which is the best it's ever been just trying to get her back in game shape is what they're trying to do." FEVER STAR SOPHIE CUNNINGHAM HIT WITH THIRD WNBA FINE AFTER PAIGE BUECKERS COMMENT ON HER PODCAST Cunningham insisted she wasn't withholding any information. The Fever said on July 24 that the sharpshooter "underwent further medical evaluations earlier this week, which confirmed that no additional injuries or damage were discovered." Clark's return remains one of the biggest mysteries in the WNBA as the regular season comes to an end. She's missed 22 games so far this season with three separate muscle injuries. She never missed a game in college and played in every Fever game last season when she won the WNBA Rookie of the Year award.
