Manchester United agree deal to sign Benjamin Sesko in big blow to Newcastle

Manchester United are on the brink of signing Benjamin Sesko, having agreed a deal worth up to £73.7million with RB Leipzig, according to PA news agency. The 22 year old striker, who is highly sought after, has been at the centre of a bidding war between the Red Devils and Newcastle, both keen to strengthen their attacking line-up for the upcoming season. Sesko expressed his preference for a move to United over Newcastle, and it's understood that a deal has now been struck with Leipzig for 76.5m euros (£66.3m), plus a potential 8.5m euros (£7.4m) in add-ons. The Slovenia international has been granted permission to travel to Manchester to undergo a medical and complete the move. Sesko scored 21 goals in all competitions last term and has long been on the Red Devils' radar, stretching back to his move from Domzale to RB Salzburg in 2019. Newcastle had made the first move this summer and reacted to seeing an initial bid rebuffed by making an improved approach worth a reported 82.5m euros (£71.9m) plus 2.5m euros (£2.2m) in add-ons. Ruben Amorim's Red Devils were waiting in the wings and followed with a rival proposal of 75m euros (£65.4m), plus a potential 10m (£8.7m) in add-ons. The terms were subsequently tweaked, with United paying slightly more as an initial fee as part of the deal in principle struck with Leipzig. Sesko is set to become the fourth signing of the summer as United look to hit back from finishing 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years – and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. Matheus Cunha joined from Wolves for £62.5m, while Bryan Mbeumo left Brentford for an initial £65m fee that could rise by a further £6m should certain add-on clauses related to team and player be achieved. Teenage wing-back Diego Leon has also linked up with United after a deal was struck with Cerro Porteno in January. Sesko's impending arrival raises fresh questions over the future of fellow frontman Rasmus Hojlund, who has scored just 14 goals in 62 Premier League appearances since joining from Atalanta in 2023. The striker, who like the Slovenian is 22, has rarely justified his lofty fee and has been linked with an exit, but the Denmark international recently stressed that he wants to stay at Old Trafford. United have been trying to sign a striker throughout this window and made Sesko their priority over Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, having been interested in Liam Delap and Hugo Ekitike before their summer moves. Newcastle also held an interest in the pair and missing out on Sesko is another blow in a frustrating summer window that has been compounded by the situation surrounding Liverpool's pursuit of Alexander Isak. The 25-year-old missed Newcastle's Asian tour with what the club called a 'minor thigh injury' but it soon emerged he was unsettled and training at former club Real Sociedad. Boss Eddie Howe claimed he only found about Isak's whereabouts through the media, with the Sweden international made to train by himself in Tyneside on Wednesday. Liverpool have seen a £110m bid rejected and, while the Premier League champions remain keen on the 25-year-old, sources on Merseyside have indicated they would not enter a bidding war.

Why Newcastle have become the new Tottenham after getting rejected by stars despite having richest owners in football

The Toon have been snubbed by several key targets TOON-ING OUT Why Newcastle have become the new Tottenham after getting rejected by stars despite having richest owners in football SO how did the club with the richest owners in world football turn into the Tottenham of the North? Why are so many of the most-wanted players in Europe swiping left on the chance to join Newcastle United? A club which won its first domestic silverware in 70 years, qualified for the Champions League and boasts a vast, fanatical support, should have been enjoying a transformative summer. The euphoria of clinching the Carabao Cup, then heading back into the European elite, was supposed to serve as a launchpad for the Geordie Arabia revolution. Instead, tumbleweed is blowing across Tyneside as Newcastle risk losing the transfer window due to a combination of neglect, misfortune and the ongoing restrictions of PSR regulations. Alexander Isak is trying to engineer a move to Liverpool, while Benjamin Sesko prefers lowly, Europe-free Manchester United over St James' Park. Advertisement READ MORE IN FOOTBALL BEN AND GONE Newcastle send scouts to watch £87m Greece star, 26, after Sesko snub The Slovenian striker is expected to join Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap, Dean Huijsen and James Trafford among a long list of players to have snubbed the Toon this summer. It's normally only Spurs who suffer such an embarrassing sequence of 'thanks, but no thanks' messages during a transfer window. Isak's desire to join the Premier League champions stems back to Newcastle's unwillingness to grant him a significant rise on his £120,000-per-week wages. The Swede is the jewel in Newcastle's crown - the closest thing to Thierry Henry in the current era, with his 23 Premier League goals bettered only by Mo Salah last season. Advertisement But PSR has made it impossible for the Saudis to follow the lead of those previous filthy-rich 'disruptors' Roman Abramovich at Chelsea and Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City. Alexander Isak arrives at Newcastle training for treatment amid Liverpool transfer interest Newcastle are unable to blow rivals out of the water on transfer fees and wages. Any assault on world domination must be a waiting game. And time is not on Isak's side, as a 25-year-old reaching the peak of his powers. While an excellent coach who has overperformed throughout most of his career, Eddie Howe is not a dynamic hardman well-suited to dealing with a situation like Isak's stand-off. Advertisement And with Sesko preferring a move to Old Trafford, Newcastle's frustrations in trying to sign a striker - as a potential replacement for Isak, or to boost their existing squad - are being continually frustrated. As Alan Shearer says, 'it is not a good look' and the summer has been a 'nightmare'. So far, winger Anthony Elanga has been Newcastle's only major signing, in a £55million move from Nottingham Forest. And as Howe looks to juggle the demands of the Premier League and Champions League, Newcastle's squad looks worryingly thin. Advertisement 7 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW While PSR continues to stifle ambitions, the club does have financial wriggle room to spend this summer - hence their bids for Sesko and several other forwards. Yet there is a major power vacuum at the club, with sporting director Paul Mitchell having left in August after a brief and vexatious spell, while chief executive Darren Eales handed in his notice last year due to a serious health condition. Advertisement To leave both positions vacant during such a pivotal summer looks like carelessness. This comes after the departures of Amanda Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi last summer, which wiped away the public face of Newcastle's Saudi ownership and added to the impression of a rudderless ship. There are fears among the club's support that their Saudi paymasters are indifferent to the club. The sporting interests of the Saudi Public Investment Fund are wide and varied - including ventures into golf, boxing and tennis as well as its stakes in four Saudi Pro-League clubs. Advertisement With Saudi Arabia set to host the World Cup in 2034, there are many other sporting priorities on which to focus - without PSR hindrances. The Premier League attempted to block Newcastle's Saudi takeover in the first place and its clubs are determined to hold them back. It would be ever so cute to imagine that those rivals are motivated by a distaste for the severe human-rights abuses of the Saudi regime. In truth, it is all about self-interest. Newcastle's training facilities remain well short of elite level and plans to expand St James' Park or build a new stadium remain under wraps. Advertisement There is no sense of urgency or focus about the club and this is acknowledged by many shakers and movers in the transfer market. Yet for Isak, and for any world-class target, there will always be an urgency to win trophies and earn sackloads of money in a short career. 7 Bryan Mbeumo didn't fancy a move to the North East Credit: Getty 7 Joao Pedro chose Chelsea over Newcastle Credit: Getty
